My name is Savannah Wade, and I am a multidisciplinary painter. I am currently attending Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore where I am majoring in Painting. I work as a free lance artist and stay involved in the local politics of Maryland by volunteering for campaigns I support. In my work I use texture, dimension, and saturation of color as tools. These qualities of art making allow me to communicate my interpretations of sensuality, which is a recurrent motif in my work. My art reflects an intense passion I feel toward the beauties of humanness. Portraiture, in particular, allows me to capture what I perceive in my quiet observances of people, which to me is a release.
This series, titled Of Gentle Flesh, focuses on portraying young black men through vulnerability and sensuality. The portraits create an intimate space between the subject and the viewer, changing the stereotypes tied to black masculinity, such as violence and aggression. My goal with these pieces is to redefine the narrative of black masculinity and masculinity and general. I believe the standard of masculine expression in our society does not permit integral parts of being a human. Emotional expression and intimacy are aspects of life that allow people to connect and grow, yet men, and especially black men, are ridiculed for partaking in them.
