I’ve finished a HTML/JS remake of the only good game Jungletac’s actually made: Bomb Fish.

It’s a game for One Station on the “M3 Pocket MAX” “Vmax-1″ “50 in 1″ cart. This is a set of 50 NES-on-a-chip games most of which are entertaining for less than a second; yet I do enjoy this game. You may be familiar with most of these games from the VG Pocket series, whether or not you’ve ever heard of a One Station. I don’t think Bomb Fish has ever appeared on another system, though.

In this game where you play as a cat hellbent on throwing a bomb at an innocent little fish. It’s a puzzle game with some of the oddest mechanics I’ve seen in a simple 8bit puzzler. It’s a bit “push the box” but the goal isn’t just shuffling them around to get to the goal, but to destroy them while avoiding turning them into rocks.

The remake comes with a level editor so you can make your own levels, save them, and share them with friends.

So I did a thing. Xcelled was complaining that the dye palette page on the wiki was too bare, he wanted to put up the raw palettes, and I was like “I would want to know more about the algo first, like could you get them legally.” So we reversed the dye palette warping algo with some clever math tests basically, turns out it’s two applications of a 2D sin^2 wave at varying amplitudes. I reimplemented the algo in Python because…sometimes I do that. He did one in C# but it’s not available publicly right now.
