Why is this so hard. Maybe I should have counted all the books separately. The problem is I know what books are objectively Good and what books are my favorite and they are NOT the same. It’s much easier to list my favorites. I read Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones so many times my copy is falling apart. Is it a good book??? Like, fairly.

Empress of Salt and Fortune. It’s just a novella but it lives in my brain forever. beautifully brutal.

it’s a new read for me so we will see if I still think this in a decade or whatever, but Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold currently contains almost everything I want in a sci-fi novel.

4- What section of a bookstore do you browse

shocking absolutely no one, I go straight for the sci-fi section. I will also occasionally browse poetry, science non-fiction, and if there’s a shelf for local authors or books. However I usually go into bookstores with Intent to get a specific book (so I don’t get way too many) and do less browsing.

15. recommend and review a book

okay so I Just finished Taiwan Travelogue so we’re doing that. This is not specifically a rec for you, my friend, although I think you might enjoy parts of it (you can hit me up if you want a specifically tailored book rec lol).

This is going to be a lightly spoiler-y review so do not continue if you don’t want that.

Taiwan Travelogue (English translation) is a translation of a novel that is pretending to be a translation of an autobiographical novelization of the narrator’s travels in Taiwan. (I did not catch onto what was happening here until literally the last page lmao. It’s clever but maybe too clever for me there). It’s about a woman from Japan who travels to Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period and falls in love with a. Everything she eats and b. Her Taiwanese interpreter/guide. It DOES have lesbians. It is NOT a romance novel. It’s about power dynamics and how they permeate relationships.

it’s a good book . I got a little bored with some of the incredible length and detail of food descriptions but it will also make you hungry. The narrator made me want to scream constantly but the book was engaging enough to keep me going anyways. I am still thinking about the claims it made about power and relationships (my favorite topic). Something I think it did really well and importantly was look at the very lesbian relationship dynamic of “I, the big strong butch woman, will do anything to protect the (small, femme) woman I’m in love with” and how that works or doesn’t, especially in the context of larger power structures at play. I want someone to read it and then come discuss it with me.
