He could have had a nice arc in which he is defined by being out of the norm and being true to himself and who he is. Like, maybe, after failing his assessment two times he could have realized the current way of things doesn’t suit him and instead find a different way to learn things, he could have decided on his own name, once again rivalling the norm of warriors society. It would have fit well with the current arc of the traditional ways of the clans Changing. It could have been a more personalized, smaller scale story to compliment this big worldly change for them. Nightheart being different and feeling isolated would have worked had they not Done What They Did, it could have been something his clanmates had to have learned to embrace. Hell, you could still add in the minor conflict with Sparkpelt and Finchlight but instead make Nightheart an unreliable narrator who learned to accept THEIR point of view just as his clan would have had to accept his, not demonized Sparkpelt for something that was never in her control.
