NO LITERALLY. they all have the same playbook, it's either boring ass conversation or they turn it sexual within three messages. i can't be bothered anymore!!
I met my man on a dating app...but trust me, it took 2 years of swiping to find him! Most of the men on there just want to send nudes or have a one night stand! Its a hard life in the dating world ladies, I wish you both the best 🫶🏻

Look I don’t watch hockey and don’t really know who these people are, but every time I read one of your fics, I feel like I know them! You make it so real and easy! I loved it! And it was so cute!! We love an accidental hard launch 🤭
Warnings: angst, unresolved break up, keep going back to each other, suggestive writing under 18s dni. I think that’s it?
Authors Note: hi! I’m back! It’s been a while hasn’t it 🫣 can you let me off? I have twins, life is busy! But anyway, here is a Max Verstappen fic cos he has decided to kickstart my crush on him again…let’s be honest, it never left 🫢 this is a long one cos apparently I like writing them now! I hope you enjoy and please remember feedback is always appreciated 🫶🏻
Song Inspo: We Know Us - Ella Langley
It’s 10:00 p.m. when my phone lights up again. I know the ringtone before I even look. That low, insistent vibration against the wooden nightstand, the same one that’s cut through silence in hotel rooms from Monaco to Melbourne. I stare at the ceiling of my flat in Monaco and pretend for three full rings that I might not answer, that this time I’ll let it go to voicemail, that I’ll be stronger than the version of me who always caves, but I answer on the fourth.
“Y/N” his voice is rough, like he’s been chewing on the words for hours, I close my eyes and press the phone harder to my ear.
“It’s late, Max”
“I know” A pause, and the sound of him exhaling “I’m not calling to fight”
I almost laugh “you’re always calling to fight, or to not fight, or to tell me why this time is different”
“It is different” the words land exactly where they always do, somewhere between my ribs and the soft, stupid part of me that still wants to believe him. I roll onto my side, staring at the empty half of the bed. The sheets are cold, they’ve been cold for three weeks, since he was last here.
“You said that last time” I murmur “and the time before that. And the time in Singapore when you showed up with that look on your face like the world had ended and only I could fix it”
“Singapore was different”
“Singapore ended with me crying in a bathroom stall while you got on a plane” Silence stretches. I can hear him thinking. Max never rushes when he’s cornered, he just waits, like the quiet itself will force the other person to fold first. It works more often than I want to admit.
“I’m in the car” he says finally “Ten minutes from you”
My stomach drops “Max—”
“I know what you’re going to say. I know the speech. I’ve heard it, I’ve given it, we both know how this ends” His voice drops lower, almost gentle, which is somehow worse “but I still turned the car around, and you’re still on the phone”
I hate that he’s right. I hate that my free hand is already pushing the duvet off my legs. I hate that my heart is doing that stupid, traitorous thing where it speeds up like it’s still twenty-two and stupidly in love instead of twenty-six and exhausted.
“You can’t keep doing this” I whisper.
“I know”
“We can’t keep doing this”
“I know that too”
The line goes quiet except for the soft hum of the engine and the occasional click of the indicator. I imagine him driving the dark coastal road, one hand on the wheel, jaw set the way it is when he’s about to overtake someone into Turn 1.
“I’m going to hang up” I say.
“Okay.”
I don’t hang up, but neither does he. We stay like that, breathing into the same silence, until the engine noise changes, until I hear the faint scrape of tires on the gravel outside my building. I end the call without saying goodbye. The knock comes sixty seconds later. Three firm raps, no hesitation. I stand in the middle of my living room in an oversized Red Bull hoodie that used to be his and bare legs, staring at the door like it might open itself if I look hard enough. I know what’s on the other side. I know what happens if I open it but I open it anyway.
Max is standing there in a black hoodie and denim jeans, hair a little longer than the last time I saw him, eyes tired in that specific way that only comes after a race weekend and three weeks of silence. He steps forward and I step back. The door clicks shut behind him. The air between us is thick with everything we never say out loud. I can smell the faint trace of his cologne and the sharper scent of night air still clinging to his clothes. My hands are shaking, I shove them into the front pocket of the hoodie so he won’t see.
“You shouldn’t be here” I say.
“I know”
“We said we were done”
“I know”
“You’re going to break this again. We’re going to break this again”
Max’s mouth twitches, not quite a smile, more like the ghost of one “Yeah. Probably”
That’s the thing about us. We never pretend we don’t know. We just pretend, for a few hours, that knowing changes anything. He takes another step. I don’t move. When his hands finally come up, slow and deliberate, they settle on my waist like they never left. His thumbs brush the soft skin just above the waistband of my shorts and I feel the entire last three weeks collapse in on themselves.
“I missed you” he says.
I should say something sharp. Something about how missing someone doesn’t make the rest of it go away. About the arguments that start over nothing and end with both of us too proud to apologize. About the way he disappears into the season and leaves me holding the pieces. About how every time we do this I lose a little more of the version of myself that used to believe in clean breaks.
Instead I say “I missed you too”
His forehead drops against mine and for a second we just stand there, breathing the same air, the same old gravity pulling us closer. Then his mouth finds mine and the world narrows to the taste of him and the solid heat of his body and the soft, desperate sound I make when his hands slide under the hoodie and up my back. He backs me against the wall by the door, kisses me like he’s been starving, and I let him. My fingers tangle in his hair, pull hard enough that he groans into my mouth. The hoodie ends up on the floor and his shirt follows. When his mouth trails down my neck I tip my head back and close my eyes and let myself forget, just for a little while, that this always ends the same way.
Soon enough, we move to the bedroom, the lights are off and the curtains are pulled tight against the Monaco night. Max’s weight settles over me, careful and familiar, and when he pushes inside me it’s with a slow, deliberate roll of his hips that makes my breath hitch. He watches my face the entire time, blue eyes dark in the low light, like he’s trying to memorize the exact moment I stop fighting it.
“Look at me,” he murmurs.
I do and we move together like people who have done this a hundred times and still somehow can’t get enough. There’s no performance in it, no careful choreography, just the slide of skin and the soft, broken sounds we make when it starts to feel like too much. When I come, it’s with his name on my lips and my nails digging into his shoulders. He follows a moment later, forehead pressed to mine, breath ragged, holding me like he’s afraid I’ll disappear if he lets go. Afterward we lie tangled in the sheets, the room quiet except for the distant sound of the harbor. His hand traces lazy patterns on my stomach. I stare at the ceiling and wait for the regret to arrive.
“You’re thinking too loud” Max says eventually.
I turn my head on the pillow. In the dark I can just make out the sharp line of his jaw, the faint shadow of stubble. “Someone has to”
He huffs a quiet laugh “Does it ever work?”
“No”
“Then stop” I should push him away. I should tell him to leave before morning, before the sunlight makes everything too clear. Instead I roll onto my side and tuck myself against his chest, cheek pressed over his heart, his arm comes around me automatically, hand settling in my hair.
“We’re going to mess this up again” I whisper into his skin.
“I know”
“We’re better off alone”
“I know that too”
“But we’re still going to do it.”
Max’s fingers tighten in my hair, just once “Yeah, we are”
I close my eyes and let the truth of it settle between us like a third person in the bed. We know us. We’ve always known us. The late-night calls and the slammed doors and the apologies that never quite stick. The way he looks at me like I’m the only thing that makes sense when the rest of the world is spinning too fast, the way I let him back in every single time even when I swear I won’t, we know how this ends, and we just keep choosing the beginning anyway.
Morning comes soft and grey through the gaps in the curtains. I wake first, the way I always do when he’s here. Max is still asleep, one arm thrown across my waist, face buried in the pillow, he looks younger like this. I watch him for a long time and I think about the first time we did this after our breakup, how it felt like falling and flying at the same time. I think about the last time we tried to end it for good, the way my voice shook when I told him I couldn’t keep doing this, the way he just nodded like he’d already known. I think about all the nights in between, the ones that started with a phone call at 10 p.m. and ended with us tangled up in the same sheets, pretending we didn’t know better.
I carefully extract myself from Max’s arm and pad into the kitchen. The coffee machine hums to life, while outside the window the marina is already waking up, boats shifting gently in their berths, early light glinting off the water. Normal life continuing like nothing happened and I pour two mugs. When I walk back into the bedroom Max is awake, propped up against the headboard, watching me with that unreadable expression he wears when he’s trying not to show too much. I hand him the coffee but he takes it without looking away from my face.
“You’re already halfway out the door,” he says quietly.
I sit on the edge of the bed, facing him “I’m still here”
“For now” the honesty between us is its own kind of intimacy. We’ve never been good at the soft lies other couples tell, we skip straight to the hard truths and then ignore them until they burn.
“I have to leave for the factory tomorrow” he says after a long silence “Simulator, meetings, the usual”
“Okay”
“I’ll call when I land”
I look at him, the dark circles under his eyes. The way his fingers curl around the mug like he’s holding on to something more than coffee.
“Don’t,” I say.
His brow furrows “Don’t what?”
“Don’t call, not this time” I set my own mug down on the nightstand “If you call, I’ll answer, and if I answer, you’ll come back, and if you come back we’ll do this all over again. And one day it’s going to hurt too much to keep surviving it”
Max is quiet for a long time. Then he sets his coffee aside and reaches for me, tugging me forward until I’m straddling his lap, the sheet tangled between us. His hands settle on my hips, thumbs stroking slow circles against my skin “You think I don’t know that?” he asks, voice low “You think I don’t sit in those hotel rooms at night and hate myself for picking up the phone? You think I don’t know exactly how this ends every single time? You think I don’t regret walking away every single time?”
“Then why do you keep calling?”
His forehead drops against mine “Because the alternative is worse…losing you completely is worse”
I want to argue. I want to tell him that solitude is cleaner, that the quiet after the storm is better than the storm itself, but the truth is I already know what the alternative feels like. I’ve lived it. The empty bed, the phone that doesn’t ring, the way the world keeps turning without him in it and how wrong it feels even when it’s supposed to be right. So I kiss him instead. It’s slower this time, the kind of kiss that tastes like goodbye even when neither of us is saying the word. When we break apart Max’s hands are in my hair and my heart is doing that familiar, stupid thing again “one more day” he murmurs against my mouth “Just give me one more day before we start facing the reality again”
I should say no, but instead, we spend the day the way we always do when the clock is running out. We cook breakfast together in the tiny kitchen, his body crowding mine at the stove, his chin hooked over my shoulder while the eggs scramble. We take a long shower that turns into something else entirely against the tile. We lie on the couch with a race replay on mute and talk about nothing important, his sister’s kids, the restaurant in Spa that still has our favorite table, the way the light hits the water in the harbor at certain times of day. We don’t talk about the future and we don’t talk about the past, we just exist in the narrow space between the two, where the knowing can’t quite reach us yet. Late afternoon finds us back in bed, the sheets kicked down around our ankles, my head on his chest while his fingers card slowly through my hair. Outside the window the sky is turning that soft Monaco gold that always makes everything look more beautiful than it is.
“I love you” Max says into the quiet.
The words land heavy and true. They always do. We’ve said them in enough languages and enough cities that they don’t surprise me anymore. What surprises me is how much I still want to hear them “I know,” I whisper “I love you too”
He presses a kiss to the top of my head “That’s the problem, isn’t it?”
“Yeah”
We fall silent again. I can feel his heartbeat under my cheek, steady, reliable, the one constant in a life that otherwise refuses to stay still. I think about all the versions of us that have existed in this bed. The hopeful ones, the angry ones, the ones that thought this time might be different but none of them lasted, but they all felt real while they were happening. Evening comes and we order takeout and eat it on the floor of the living room because the table feels too formal for whatever this is. Max steals fries off my plate the way he always does, I pretend to be annoyed the way I always do. When the food is gone we end up back against the couch, my legs draped over his lap, his hand resting warm on my thigh. The clock on the wall ticks toward 10 p.m. again and I feel the shift before it happens, the way the air changes when the night starts to lean toward ending, Max’s fingers tighten slightly on my leg.
“I should go,” he says.
“You should”
I turn my head and find him already looking at me, the same look from last night, the same look from a hundred other nights…the one that says he knows exactly what he’s doing and he’s going to do it anyway.
“If we know us,” I say softly “this is the part where it starts to turn”
Max’s mouth curves, small and sad “Yeah”
“And then it burns”
“Yeah, it always burns”
I lean in and kiss him one last time, the kind of kiss that tries to hold onto something already slipping away. When I pull back his eyes are darker than before “Go,” I tell him “before I ask you to stay”
He stands. I stay on the floor and watch him gather his things, hoodie, keys, the quiet dignity of a man who has done this exit enough times to make it look almost graceful. At the door he pauses, hand on the handle, and looks back at me “I’ll still call” he says.
I nod “I know you will”
“And you’ll still answer.”
“I always do”
A faint smile. “We’re going to mess this up y’know?”
“We always do”
Max opens the door. The night air rushes in, cool and salt-edged. He steps through it, then turns one last time.
“I love you” he says, almost to himself and the door closes.
“I love you too” I say into the new quiet surrounding me. I sit on the floor for a long time after he’s gone, listening to the sound of his car starting up and pulling away into the Monaco night. The flat feels larger without him in it, the same way it always does. My phone is on the coffee table where I left it, I pick it up, unlock the screen, and stare at the empty message thread between us. The last text is from three weeks ago, a single word from him after the last fight. Sorry. Then I lock the phone and set it face-down on the table. I know how this ends. I’ve always known, but somewhere between the late-night call and the way he looked at me this morning, I also know something else, something quieter and more dangerous…I’ll still answer the next time, and the time after that, and every time after that until one of us finally means it when we say we’re done. And the one thing that won’t change is how much I love him, despite our flawed relationship.
I stand up, gather the empty takeout containers, and start the quiet work of putting the flat back together. The hoodie he left behind is still on the floor by the door. I pick it up, press it to my face for one long second, and then fold it neatly over the back of a chair, tomorrow I’ll wash it, I’ll put it away and I’ll try, again, to be better at being alone.
The phone rings at 11:47 p.m and I know the number. I know the time difference. I know exactly where he is, Milton Keynes, factory lights still on, the smell of carbon and coffee clinging to him even through the line. I told myself I wouldn’t answer, I told myself the hoodie folded over the chair was just laundry I hadn’t put away yet. I told myself a lot of things between the moment the door closed behind him and now.
I answer on the second ring “Hey”
His voice is quieter than last night, there’s no engine noise this time, just the low hum of an air-conditioning unit and the soft scrape of a chair.
“You landed” I say.
“Yeah. Couple hours ago, meetings ran long, I kept looking at my phone”
I sit on the edge of the bed, bare feet on the cold floor, and stare at the dark shape of the harbor through the half-open curtains “You said you’d call”
“I said a lot of things” I can almost see him rubbing the back of his neck the way he does when he’s trying to find the right words and failing “I meant this one”
Silence stretches. I wait for the usual script, the soft apology, the careful distance, the quiet exit. Instead he says, “I want to try”
The words land like a stone in still water, making me close my eyes “Max—”
“No. Listen. Just, listen for a second, please” his voice tightens “I know what we are y/n, I know the pattern. I know every version of this conversation we’ve already had, but I still got on that plane thinking about the way you looked at me last night, and I still walked into every meeting replaying the sound of your voice when you told me not to call, and I still picked up the phone the second I was alone”
I press my free hand against my sternum, like I can keep the ache from spreading “That’s not trying, Max, that’s the same thing we’ve always done”
“Then what does trying look like?” He sounds almost angry now. Not at me, but at the question itself “Tell me. Because I’ve tried leaving, I’ve tried staying away, I’ve tried pretending I don’t check the time difference every night. None of it works, so tell me what the version is where we actually try and it doesn’t end with one of us walking out”
“There isn’t one, we clearly aren’t made to last”
The silence that follows is sharper than any raised voice “That’s not true” he says finally.
“It is” my voice comes out steadier than I feel “We know us, Max. We’ve always known, you show up, I let you in. We burn hot for a few days and then the season starts or the pressure starts or one of us says the wrong thing at the wrong time and suddenly we’re standing on opposite sides of a room that used to feel like home. You want to try? We’ve already tried, over and over. We’ve tried being in a committed relationship, it lasted 2 years, we’ve tried being exs with benefits, it always ends the same way”
“So we just stop?” There’s something raw in the question “We just decide it’s useless and walk away for good this time? Is that what you want? Even though we both love each other?”
I want to say yes. The word is right there, clean and final, but my throat closes around it “I want to stop hurting,” I whisper “I want to stop waking up and reaching for someone who isn’t there. I want to stop calculating how many days until the next time you call and I answer even though I swore I wouldn’t. I want to stop knowing exactly how this ends and still choosing it anyway”
He exhales hard, the sound crackling through the speaker “You think I don’t want that too?”
“Then why are you calling?”
“Because I love you! Because every version of my life without you in it feels wrong, because I sat in that factory today looking at data and all I could think about was the way you taste when you stop fighting me. Because I’m tired of pretending that knowing how it ends is the same as being able to stop it”
“Loving someone doesn’t make the rest of it work” I say “We’ve loved each other through every crash and every rebuild and it never fixed the parts that keep breaking. You disappear into the car and the calendar and the pressure and I become the person waiting by the phone again, and then when you come back we pretend the waiting didn’t happen, we pretend the silences didn’t count. We pretend we’re different people than the ones who already know how this story finishes”
“So we write a different one”
I laugh, short and humourless “You can’t just decide the ending changes because you want it to. That’s not how we work”
“Then how do we work?” His voice rises “Tell me the rules, y/n, because I’ve been following the ones we already have and all they do is bring me back to this exact conversation. You say it’s useless, I say I want to try. We circle the same ground until one of us hangs up and then three weeks later the phone rings again. If that’s the only version that exists then fine, but don’t stand there and tell me trying is useless when the alternative is this, this half-life where we both pretend we’re fine without each other and neither of us believes it”
The words hit harder than I expect. I stop pacing and sit down hard on the edge of the bed again.
“I’m not pretending I’m fine” I say quietly “I’m trying to survive us”
There’s a long pause. When he speaks again his voice is lower, almost careful “I don’t want you to survive me. I want you to stay”
Something in my chest cracks open. I press the heel of my hand against my eyes and feel the wetness there before I can stop it “You don’t get to say that,” I whisper “Not after everything, not after the reason we broke up, you know the fact that you ignored me every race weekend, the way you pushed me away when a race didn’t go your way. Not when you know exactly what it costs me every time I let you back in”
“I know the cost” His voice is rough now “I pay it too. Every time I walk out that door I pay it, every time I sit in another hotel room and don’t call I pay it. And I’m sorry for what happened back then, I realised too late that all I needed was you but I’m still here asking anyway”
“Why?”
“Because I’m not ready to be done with you” The honesty in it is almost brutal “And I don’t think you are either. If you were, you wouldn’t have answered the phone”
I don’t answer. I can’t. Because he’s right and we both know it. “I’m not asking you to believe it’ll be perfect,” he says “I’m asking you to stop deciding it’s useless before we even try to do it differently. One more real attempt, not the version where I show up at midnight and we pretend the rest of the world doesn’t exist for a few hours. The version where we actually talk about the hard parts instead of waiting for them to explode. Where I don’t disappear into the season and you don’t have to wonder if I’m coming back, where we stop treating the end like it’s already written”
I close my eyes. The tears slide down anyway “And if it still ends the same way?”
“Then at least we’ll know we didn’t just keep choosing the crash because it was familiar” the line goes silent except for the soft sound of both of us breathing. I can feel the old pull, the part of me that wants to say yes, that wants to believe this time the words mean something new. The part that already knows how the story goes and is tired of being the only one who remembers the ending.
“I can’t do another almost,” I say finally “I can’t keep surviving the in-between. If we try and it falls apart again I don’t know what’s left of me after that”
Max is quiet for so long I think the call might have dropped. Then he says, very soft “Then don’t survive it alone”
I don’t know what to do with that. The kindness in it is somehow worse than the argument. I wipe my face with the sleeve of my shirt and stare at the dark window.
“I need time,” I whisper “I need you to not call every time it hurts”
A pause “I’ll try.”
“That’s not the same as not calling”
“It’s the best I can give you right now”
“Okay,” I say.
“Okay”
Neither of us hangs up. We stay on the line the way we did 2 nights before, breathing into the same silence, neither willing to be the first to end it. Outside my window the harbor lights blur through the tears I refuse to acknowledge. Eventually he speaks again, quieter than before “I meant what I said, about trying.”
“I know.”
We stay like that for another minute. Two. The silence isn’t empty this time, It’s full of everything we didn’t solve and everything we’re still not ready to let go of. When I finally hang up, the room feels too quiet. I turn off the light and lie down in the dark, the shape of him still pressed into the other side of the bed like a memory that refuses to fade, and somehow, against every promise I made myself, I’m still not ready to stop finding out what happens next.
Three days pass.
I don’t call, he doesn’t call, the silence is deliberate this time, heavy, careful, the kind we both agreed to even if neither of us fully trusted it. I keep the hoodie folded on the chair like a quiet dare. I go for runs along the harbour, I answer work emails, I sleep on my side of the bed and pretend the empty space doesn’t feel like a missing limb. On the fourth night the intercom buzzes at 7:42 p.m.
I freeze in the middle of the living room, barefoot, half a glass of wine in my hand. I press the button “It’s me” his voice is steady, no apology, no question, just the fact of him standing downstairs like he never left.
I don’t answer. I just unlock the door, by the time the elevator reaches my floor my heart is hammering so hard I can feel it in my throat. The knock is soft this time. Two quiet raps. I open the door and there he is, black hoodie, travel-worn, a duffel bag at his feet, eyes locked on mine like he’s been holding his breath the entire flight, neither of us speaks for a long moment. Then Max steps inside, drops the bag, and closes the door behind him with a quiet click.
“I know what we said” he starts, voice low “about time, about not calling every time it hurts. I lasted three days, that’s the best I could do”
I set the wine glass down on the side table before I drop it “You flew back?”
“I told the team I needed two days. They can manage without me for forty-eight hours” He takes one step closer, then stops, giving me space I both need and hate “I’m not here for another night of pretending. I’m here because I meant what I said on the phone. I want to try, for real this time”
The words sit between us, heavier than before. Just him, standing in my hallway with his hands open at his sides, looking more nervous than I’ve seen him since the first time he ever said he loved me. I cross my arms, mostly to keep myself from reaching for him “What does ‘for real’ even look like for us, Max? Because every time we say that, we end up right back here.”
“Then we change it” He runs a hand through his hair “I’m not asking you to trust the old version of us. I’m asking you to try a new one with me, the one where I don’t vanish for weeks without checking in, the one where you tell me when it’s too much instead of waiting until you’re already halfway out the door. The one where we actually talk about the hard parts instead of only finding each other when everything else is on fire”
I stare at him. At the dark circles under his eyes. At the way his shoulders are set like he’s bracing for impact. At the quiet determination that has always been both the best and worst thing about him “You’re still going to be gone half the year,” I say “The calendar doesn’t change just because we want it to”
“I know. But I can be better when I’m gone, and better when I’m here” He takes another step, slow enough that I could still stop him “I’m not promising it won’t be hard. I’m not promising we won’t fight. I’m promising that I’m done treating us like something temporary we both keep expecting to end, if we’re going to crash, let it be because we tried everything first, not because we were too scared to try at all”
The honesty in his voice undoes something in me. I uncross my arms “If we do this…really do this…you don’t get to walk out when it gets hard and come back when it’s convenient. And I don’t get to shut down and pretend I’m fine until I brea, we talk. Even when it’s ugly…especially when it’s ugly”
Max’s mouth curves, small and careful “Deal”
“And if it starts to feel like the old pattern again, we stop, we don’t keep dragging it out just because the alternative is lonel”
“Deal.”
I let out a long breath. The fear is still there, coiled tight under my ribs, but so is something else. Something that feels dangerously like hope “Okay” I whisper.
Max’s eyes search my face “Okay?”
“Okay. We try”
The words feel enormous in the quiet flat. He closes the remaining distance in two strides and pulls me into him, arms wrapping around me so tightly I can feel the tension finally leaving his body. I bury my face against his neck and breathe him in, cologne, airplane, the faint metallic scent that always clings to him after factory days. His hand cups the back of my head, fingers sliding into my hair, and for a moment we just stand there holding on. I tilt my head back. His eyes are soft in a way the world rarely sees. I rise onto my toes and kiss him, slow, deliberate, no urgency, just the quiet decision of two people choosing each other again. His hands settle on my waist, steadying me, and when we break apart his forehead rests against mine.
“I meant it,” he says. “For real this time”
“I know” I brush my thumb along his jaw “Me too”
We don’t make it to the bedroom right away. We end up on the couch first, tangled together under a blanket, talking in low voices about the things we never used to say out loud. About the silences that used to stretch too long, about the fear of becoming a footnote in each other’s seasons. About how neither of us wants to keep surviving the in-between alone. Max listens the way he does when he’s analyzing data, completely present, no interruptions. When I finish he tells me about the nights in hotel rooms when the only thing that kept him from calling was the promise he’d made me on the phone. How much he hated keeping it.
Later, when the talking turns quieter and the space between us turns warmer, we move to the bedroom. The lights stay off. The curtains stay open just enough to let the harbor lights paint soft gold across the walls. Max undresses me slowly, like he’s learning me all over again, and I do the same for him. When he lays me down and settles over me there’s no desperate edge to it this time. Just care. Just the quiet intensity of two people who have decided the risk is worth taking. He kisses me like he has all the time in the world. We move together without the old urgency, without the unspoken countdown of how many hours we have left. Every touch feels like a promise. Every breath feels like a choice. Afterward we lie facing each other in the dark, legs tangled, his hand tracing slow patterns on my bare shoulder. I can still feel the faint residual fear under my skin, but it’s quieter now. Manageable.
“What happens tomorrow?” I ask.
Max’s fingers still for a second, then resume their path “I stay. We figure out the next few days, I go back to the factory when I have to, but I come home when I can. We talk every day even if it’s just five minutes between meetings. We stop treating the calendar like an excuse to disappear”
I nod against the pillow “And when it gets hard?”
“We tell each other. No more waiting until it’s already broken”
I reach up and brush a strand of hair off his forehead “Okay”
He catches my hand and presses a kiss to the inside of my wrist. “Okay”
We fall quiet again. Outside, the harbor shifts and settles. Inside, the space between us feels different, not the temporary ceasefire of before, but something closer to a beginning. Fragile. Uncertain. Real.
I know us. I know the risks. I know the history. I know how easily the old patterns could slide back into place the moment the pressure returns, but for the first time in a long time, I also know something else. We’re choosing to try anyway. Max pulls me closer, tucking my head under his chin, and I close my eyes against the steady beat of his heart.

Part Two (Coming Soon)
A/N: gif credit to @hat-trick-honey 💦 unfortunately, I would crumble for Clayton that's about to come in this miniseries rewrite, and i don't know what that says about me personally. I actually ended up adding onto this as I was rewriting this because I know there's a few things in the other parts that didn't make sense, and now I kinda want to do a short part for the exhibition mentioned at the end. I think this version of Clayton wouldn't care about being openly flirtatious or whatever with the reader, even though everyone knows she's got a boyfriend. Let me know if you want to see that before part two. Enjoy!! <3
You awoke to the sound of Clayton's phone pinging, several different notifications coming in simultaneously, a soft, tired whimper sounding as you turned over. He looks back at you, the soft subtle twitching of his lips, easily missed if you weren't already looking at him. "Hi," he speaks first, before turning his back to you, mumbling, "I'll be with you in a second.”
"Who are you texting?" You ask, studying his naked back, your fingers just reaching him, wanting to connect the few freckles like a dot-to-dot puzzle.
"Hmm?” He looks back at you again, moving slightly away so you couldn't touch him anymore. You frown, and retract your hand. “Oh, just the group chat." He sends one final text, muting the chat until he is ready to pay attention to it again. "They're talking about doing something tomorrow," he says, now sitting back against the headboard, "I'm gonna go, you should too.”
You shake your head. "I can't.”
"Why not?”
"I said I'd do this thing with Ty.”
He looks off to the side, hiding his annoyance. "Well, I'm sure this thing will be thrilling," he says, rubbing his chest, "it's not like Ty has ever had a bad or boring idea. Ever.”
You roll your eyes. "I was actually supposed to do this thing with him today.”
"Well, why didn't you?" He asks, tangling his body up with yours as he moves to lie between your legs, his hips bracketed by your thighs. Pushing the old shirt up your torso, he kisses his way up your stomach, mumbling "take it off" against your skin. You obliged immediately, sitting up a little to take it off. "You didn't feel like it, is that what you told him?" A sharp whimper passes your lips, feeling his rough hands cup your chest, rolling the left nipple between his finger and thumb. He pinches it hard, and you gasp for him again. "Or is it because I ended up calling you?" He kisses in between the valley of your breasts, his head moving to the left, his tongue licking across the perked nipple.
You shake your head, saying a quick no, before moaning loudly as he sucked on your nipple. You could feel him grinning against your chest; the reaction he had teased out contradicting your original answer.
"Oh, no, of course not," Clayton shakes his head, his voice just a bit higher, mocking you with pouty lips. Goosebumps form on your skin as he traces his fingers along your smooth jaw, coming to a stop at your mouth, thumb touching your bottom lip, caressing it, as he hooked his other fingers under your chin. He pushes your head back, making you look up at him. "But here you are," his voice is low and silky, turning your tummy all gooey, "in my bed, resting after I just fucked you." He chuckles as you try to hide your face, skin flushed, and just a little bit of regret in your eyes. "I don't even know why you're still with him-”
"Clay," you sigh his name, your head falling back into the pillow.
"-I don't think anyone does.”
It was no secret that Clayton, and a few others, found Ty boring, often questioning what you saw in a guy who lived a life less exciting than the one you and the rest of your friends had. They were either artists, like yourself, worked in social media, owned boutiques, or were athletes. To them, Ty was just a doctor.
You hadn't seen Clayton properly in years, paths crossed briefly in the summers at family weddings, exchanging a few words before the conversations became awkward periods of silence, because you didn't really know each other anymore. But changes in your life (Ty's residency) had brought you to Salt Lake, and with it, it brought Clayton back to you. It wasn't the same Clayton you remembered; that guy was smaller, less muscular, awkward and shy. He still couldn't hold eye contact with you without needing to look away every other second, but he was more confident now. A little cockier, you might say. Fancied the attention his good looks got him.
The first time you introduced Clayton to Ty, he was quick to give you his thoughts the second your boyfriend had slipped out to take a call. Boring. A little dull. That you could do better. And probably why a week later, drunk after a big win, he got you alone, back pressed against a cold brick wall, grinning, all smug-like, when you made no attempt to push him away, intoxicated on the way your skin buzzed as he touched you, how lightheaded you got from kissing him, the thrill of it all temporarily giving you amnesia. It was like Ty didn't even exist to you. And when he whispered in your ear about wanting to take you home, you followed, too willing to feed that sixteen year old foolish version of yourself that had a big crush on the cute, awkward boy next door.
You threw up all your regrets into his toilet the next morning, your skin and hair stinking of Clayton, startled, jumping as he mumbled something about his chef making you both breakfast as he passed by the bathroom, eyes trained on his phone, as one hand adjusted the waistband of the grey sweatpants he had grabbed after crawling out of his bed.
You ate breakfast quickly and quietly in one of his old t-shirts, the material thin and baggy, constantly checking your phone for calls and messages from Ty, but there was nothing after the message he sent about needing to pull a double shift at the hospital. Clayton's hand grabbed yours as you attempted to leave the table, pulling you closer, you whimpering as he snuck his hand under the shirt, tracing your hips with his fingers, asking you to stay a little longer.
Now might have been different if you had just said no.
“Do you even know why you're still with him?” His voice snaps you out of your head, whimpering as he nips at your jaw, the pain dull as his teeth graze your skin.
You liked Ty, even if no one else could understand why.
Though, did you love him?
Truthfully, no.
You knew you couldn't love a person and constantly cheat on them at the same time.
But you weren't ready to face the idea that you were just keeping him around because he gave you the emotional connection you knew Clayton wasn't going to provide.
"Tell me," Clayton rolls his hips against you, his hardness pressing into you to tease out another moan, "what do you like about him?”
"He's...uh...he's nice," you stuttered, hips bucking involuntarily as he continued to slowly grind against you.
"He's nice?" He raises his eyebrows. "That does not count."
"Yes, it does.”
"No, it doesn't," he laughs, curling his hand gently around your throat, but applying no pressure, "a lot of people are nice, it doesn't make them worthy enough to be your boyfriend." You rolled your eyes, scoffing. How could he even know what makes a person's boyfriend worthy when you knew it was no secret that Clayton preferred a no strings attached type of situation to a proper relationship. "And, also, nice is a bit of a stretch for that guy," he continues to belittle Ty, "he's not an asshole but nice is a little generous.”
"You don't even know him," you bite back, overcome with the urge to defend your boyfriend.
"Whatever," Clayton shrugs, moving his hand so he could kiss your neck, "you don't need to sell it to me why you're still dating him." He nips at your neck, soothing the skin until there's another mark for you to cover up later. He hums as your head rolls back into the soft cushion of the pillow, and you whimper as you feel his lips travel up your neck to your ear. "I enjoy fucking someone's girlfriend," he whispers, the heat pooling further between your legs, "so maybe you should stay with him.”
"Yeah, well what if I've been thinking about not fucking you anymore?" You fight back with a question. It was a lie but he didn't need to know that. He was a drug that you were addicted to, and no amount of rehab or interventions was going to make you quit just yet. "What would you do then?”
"Is that right?" You nod your head, trying to keep the facade up. "Why?”
"Because why do I need you when I already have a boyfriend?”
He props himself above you, his weight distributed on both of his hands, that silver cross dangling in your face. "That's your reasoning for not wanting to fuck me anymore?" He asks, trying not to laugh in your face. "Because you have a boyfriend?”
You frown. "It's a valid reason." But one that wasn't true.
"Oh, baby, I don't think you can stop," he teases you, seeing right through your act, "how are you going to go back to your boring fucking boyfriend and not wanna pull your hair out? You're going to have to deal with him, whilst knowing you could never fuck me again. Is that what you really want?" He raises his eyebrows, his head tilting to the side as he studies your face, looking for a reaction. "How will you survive having to deal with his vanilla sex 24/7? Hmm? Having to deal with a man who doesn't treat you the way you want to be treated?” He lowers his voice. “Someone who won't put you in your fucking place?”
His hand encases your throat again, this time squeezing a little, as he dips to kiss you. There's no precision to his moves, only a hunger to satisfy. You drop into the mattress as you melt into his kiss, feeling your body dip further into his bed as his body presses into you, his tongue exploring the inside of your mouth with dominating licks.
His free hand grips your thigh, pulling your leg higher around his waist, making sure you could feel his hard length against your cunt. "Do you feel that, baby?" He asks between messy kisses. "Do you feel my hard cock against your pretty pussy?" He has you whimpering as you feel the head of his cock run against your slit, teasing you.
He releases your throat, only to pinch your jaw, angling your head back so you were looking up at him. "You may be his girlfriend, but as far as I'm concerned, you belong to me.” The hunger in his voice and the desire flooding his eyes has your pussy clenching desperately around nothing. It wasn't even long ago it was last filled, but you were itching for it again.
"Tell me whose bed you're in," he orders, his Adam's apple bobbing as he takes a deep breath in.
"Yours," you answer.
"Tell me who made you cum so fucking hard earlier.”
"You did.”
"Tell me whose cock it was you took so well.”
Your hands press to the back of his head, pulling his lips up against yours as you answer, "yours.”
He licks his lips, his hot breath fanning her face as he whispers, "tell me whose cum has been leaking out of this pussy all afternoon.” He drives two fingers inside, your walls fluttering around their long length, pushing what was left over back deep inside.
"Yours," you whine as he keeps pumping his fingers, his thumb pressing against your clit, playing with it in slow, agonising strokes.
"Good girl," he praises her, groaning and gasping as he finally slides his cock inside, replacing his fingers, greedily sucking them clean, before fisting his fingers into your hair, pulling your head back so he could kiss, nip and suck on your neck, "good fucking girl."
He pushes his whole length in, moaning baby as your pussy already clenches around him.
He keeps a steady pace, thrusting his hips, his hot breath fanning your face as he groans the word "yes" every few seconds. "Who's going to treat you this good, baby?" He asks, watching intensely as your eyes squeeze tightly shut and you bite your bottom lip. "Hmm? Will that boring fucking boyfriend of yours fuck you this good? Huh?" He pinches your jaw. “No,” he grunts, snapping his hips hard into you, “no, he fuckin' wouldn't, would he?”
Shaking your head, you tell Clayton what he was smart enough to already know. "No," you whimper, digging your nails into his shoulders, piercing the skin, needing to hold onto something, anything.
"That's right," he groans, smirking as his name topples off your lips, your perfect-sounding moans like sweet music to his ears. He listens for the sound of your breath hitching in your throat as he thrusts turn harder, short snappy movements that make you feel him deeper than before. "Does that feel good, baby?" He asks, his hand finding its place around your neck again. Your eyes pop open as you start to feel the pressure build around your neck, mewls of pleasure rolling off your lips. "Oh, god, yes," you catch his eyes, holding his gaze, a rare thing, "you feel so good. Do you like the way that feels, baby? You like being fucked by your friend, instead of your boring fucking boyfriend?"
"Please, Clay-"
You were a moaning, mewling mess underneath him, your legs pushed open, sprawled apart, so he could see himself going in and out of you, your pussy wrapping tightly around his thick length, the shaft glistening under the bedroom lights. No one could take him like you could; you were made for him. The perfect fit.
Curling your fingers around his wrist, you urged him to squeeze tighter. "Please," he cocks his brow, grinning from ear to ear, and obliged your request, "I'm so close!”
"Already?" You protest as he slows, pulling out until just the tip was nestled inside, waiting to slide himself back in. "No, no, no," he murmurs, shaking his head and adjusting his hold on your neck, "not yet, baby. You gotta wait."
"No," you whine, pleading with your eyes for him to let you cum. Pushing yourself against his body, your lips ghosting his, chasing them as you try to kiss him. "Clay, baby, please," you sounded crazy and pathetic, blubbering and whimpering as you begged for him to finish it, "I need you to let me cum."
"You need it, huh?" He bites his bottom lip. "You need it that bad, baby? So needy for me. Are you that desperate to come all over this cock?”
"Yes, yes," you pant, nodding your head and squirming underneath him, "I need it so badly.”
He pulls out, sitting up on his knees, jerking his hand up and down his shaft. "Come here and clean up this mess," he instructs, beckoning you over, grinning when you're quick to obey him, taking his hard cock into your mouth. Drool pools in his mouth as he takes in the sight of your ass sticking up in the air, back arched perfectly as you keep taking him down your throat. "You look so fucking sexy like this," he groans, weaving his fingers through your hair, pulling on it as you pull your mouth off of him, "your ass sticking up in the air as you suck on my cock.”
His eyes roll back as you glance up at him, sweetly smiling as your tongue swirls around the tip, tasting yourself on him. "You're such fucking a slut," he pushes on the back of your head, sliding his cock back into your mouth, "sucking on my cock and letting me use that pussy behind your boyfriend's back." He grunts as you splutter around his cock, spit running down your chin as he fucks himself deeper and harder into your mouth. "But you like that don't you? You like being my dirty, needy, fucking slut. Crawling over to me like some good pup, jumping to do whatever I say.”
He pulls you off, pulling you up onto your knees, the two of you kneeling in front of each other. He was still taller than you, towering over your body as he leaned down. He cleans the spit from your chin, pushing his thumb into your mouth, both of you moaning together as you suck on it.
"Say it," he orders, "say you're my dirty fucking slut.”
"I'm your dirty fucking slut," you echo, moaning into his mouth as he crashes his lips against yours, tugging harshly on your hair, and slipping his tongue into your mouth.
"He'd never treat you like this, would he?" Clayton asks, holding tightly onto your jaw. You shake your head but his tight grip doesn't allow for much movement. "I bet he doesn't even know how much of a whore you are," he belittles her, hissing as she digs her nails into his bicep, "addicted to a cock that's not his. You're addicted to this dick, aren't you? You can't live without it; that's why you keep coming back to me, isn't it?”
You nod, humming in agreement. "I just want you," you admit, your face growing warm from your little slip up, accidentally confessing it.
"But you can't have me, can you?" He lets go of your jaw, smoothing out your hair as he runs the back of his hand down the side of your head. "Not the way you want me, can you?" You bite your lip, shaking your head. "That's right," he hums, kissing your temple, sweet and soft, "now get back on your back.”
You lie back down, kissing Clayton as he slots himself back between your legs, whimpering against his mouth when you feel him running the head of his cock against your slit.
"Beg me to stop teasing you," he murmurs against your lips, seeing the annoyance grow in your pretty eyes, "beg me, fucking do it!”
"No," you mumble, finding the strength in your already tired body to flip you both over. You straddle his waist, grinding your pussy against his shaft, before sinking down onto his cock. Its thickness stretches you out, filling you up more than it did before, taking him deeper. "I'm done begging," you say, bouncing your hips. His hands hold onto your hips, fingers bruising your skin, grinning as he helps you to quicken your pace. "I'm just gonna take it," you whimper, the coil in your stomach tightening as you throw your head back.
"Then fucking take it, princess," Clayton encourages, feeling himself twitch inside you, "take it all; take every last inch of me." He grabs your wrist, pulling you down to kiss him, his hand wrapping back around your neck when you are close enough to him. You squeak against him, his clammy skin slapping against yours as he thrusts up into you. "I want to think of this moment when you're hanging out with your boyfriend tomorrow," he tells you, squeezing your throat until you were a second away from gasping for air, "I want you to think about me filling this pussy up with so much cum, marking it as mine.”
"Yours," your rhythm loses focus as you come for him, "this is yours.”
"That's right," he hums, lips brushing against your warm skin, kissing against the underside of your jaw, nipping at you, "it's mine; this fucking pussy is mine. No one-" He cuts himself with a harsh groan, your slicked walls fluttering and pulsating around his cock, squeezing him, making it hard to have a calm, clear mind. "Oh, fuck, baby," his head rolls back into the pillow, eyes squeezing shut, "just like that - gonna make me cum so hard baby." He stops thrusting, pushing down on your hips to keep you still, bottoming himself out inside of you. "Oh, fuck yes, baby, fuck-" His breathing is rigid, stopping and starting as he comes.
You roll off him, a ghost-like grin etched onto your swollen lips as you listen to him trying to to catch his breath, still praising you and your body.
Turning to the bedside cabinet, you pick up your phone, mumbling, "shit," under your breath.
"What is it?" Clayton asks, propping himself up onto one elbow.
"Ty's been trying to phone me," you answer, not seeing the look of disgust on Clayton's face as he hears Ty's name slip so easily off your lips. You lie back down, your legs still a little bit shaky. "I should call him back," you think out loud to yourself "see what he wants.”
He groans as he sits up, raking his fingers messily through his hair. "Well, you do that," he mumbles, standing up from the edge of his bed, "I'm gonna go take a shower; maybe you should join me once you're done lying to your boring boyfriend.”
The phone rings twice before Ty picks up, the faint buzzing of the hospital in the background. “I'm gonna need to pull a double tonight,” Ty says, without saying hello, “you're okay with that, right?”
“Sure,” you mumble, it's his second double shift this week, and might've been pissed off if you actually cared, “that's fine.”
“You okay?” You roll your eyes at his ‘doctor voice.’ “You sound a little out of breath.”
“I'm fine,” you lie, “just got back from a run. Getting more practice for the marathon.” He had signed you both up for some hospital charity run without asking you.
Ty chuckles. “I’ve already told Dana we're coming for her recording.” Dana was one of the nurses, a pure health nut and ran the charity run every year. Ty talked about her a lot. “Okay, well, I better go,” he says, his name being called in the background, “love you.”
“Yeah, you too,” you lie, sighing as the line goes dead, and you toss your phone onto Clayton's bed.
“What did he want?” Clayton asks, rinsing the shampoo out of his hair as you step into the shower.
“He's pulling a double shift,” you answer, turning your head away as he turns to kiss you. He frowns as he meets your cheek, his hand slipping down to pinch your bum as punishment. “You've still got shampoo in your hair,” you mumble, tipping his head so you could wash the rest of it out.
“Did he just pull a double the other day?” He winces as a stray bit of shampoo gets in his eyes, wiping his face quickly. “I'm beginning to think he spends more time at the hospital than he does with his own girlfriend.”
“Watch it, you almost sound like you actually care,” you bite, tucking the sides of his hair behind his ears. “Done.”
His arm snakes around your waist, turning you carefully, and walking you back until you're pressed against the shower wall. The tiles are cold and wet, and you gasp, arching your back.
“So, what you're saying is that you're free tonight?” He grins, and you don't like what it means. He dips his head into your neck, kissing over the marks he'd left earlier. “I get to keep you for a little longer.”
“No, actually,” you hold onto his shoulder and push him away, “Andrew has a new exhibition opening downtown. You could come.”
His face scrunches. “He flirts with you too much.”
“Jealous?”
He snorts. “Never,” he kisses your jaw and then your chin, mumbling into your skin as he marks out a path down your neck, sinking onto one knee, “because I get to taste this pussy, and he never will.”
“So, will you come with me, or not?”
“Depends,” he kisses both of your hips, “what's in it for me?”
“What do you want?”
He looks up at you, lips twitching. “You know what I want, baby.” You shake your head quickly, your face growing warm. “Come on, not even just the tip? It won't even be the whole thing.”
“No, Clayton,” you tell him, your voice firm.
“Fine,” he sighs, dragging out a breath, “I'll go if you cancel whatever boring plan you have with Ty tomorrow.”
“No,” you shake your head, you had already cancelled too many plans with Ty just because Clayton had asked you to, “I can't.”
He stands up, purposely taking a step back as you instinctively lean into him. “Then have fun all on your own tonight then,” he says, turning his back to you as steps out of the shower. He grabs a towel, wrapping it around his waist.
“Asshole,” you mutter, turning your back to him, fingers fiddling with temperature.
“Heard that,” he chuckles, and you glance over your shoulder to see him lingering at the door, watching you. “Cancel your plans and I'll come with you. Simple as that, princess.”
“I'm good,” you smile, knowing your next words were bound to get under his skin, “I'm sure I'll just have as much fun with Andrew.” His jaw ticks and your smile grows sickly sweet. “Can you grab a towel please?”
He leaves and reappears a few seconds later with two clean towels, placing them on the counter. “Is there a dress code for tonight?” You shake your head. “Then you better tell Andrew you've got a plus one.”
