I know many of us (americans/westerners) may have trouble fully understanding what it means to endure genocide. It is so big, so absolutely encompassing, that from our place of relative comfort, it can be hard to even imagine it.

But we need to imagine it. We need to empathize, and help wherever we can.

Enas is a widowed mother with two young children. She has fought and struggled for years to keep her family alive, against mounting odds. And it is getting harder, not easier.

Imagine losing everything so many times over, that it becomes a part of life. Imagine your children weeping from hunger, fear, and exhaustion. Imagine your world being reduced to brutality, with no hope or help but from stangers through a screen.

The gunfire may have ceased, but we live its aftermath every single day. We are fighting a new war daily—just to survive.

We have never been ones to ask for help; our dignity is our pride. But the horrific challenges we face today have forced our hand. We are struggling to secure the barest necessities: food, water, and even firewood for warmth and cooking.

There is a massive gap between our lives before the war and now. Through this series, I will reveal the reality of these struggles.

My sister has improved a little, but her recovery is painfully slow. She is still in the hospital, fragile and exhausted, and the doctors say she must remain under close observation for an entire week so her condition does not worsen again. Every small improvement feels like a miracle, but the fear has not left us.😔

I shared before that we needed help to pay for her treatment and hospital expenses, but we did not raise nearly enough. Now, the hospital requires $110 every single day for her medication and daily hospital fees. She must stay 7 more days, which means we urgently need to raise $770 within one week. During the war, I lost everything: my home, my job, my car, and my tablet. I'm now homeless and without shelter. Despite all that, I tried my best to finish my university studies during the war and take my exams under difficult circumstances, under bombardment. Now I'm about to finish. Do I even have the right to dream?

I dreamed of welcoming this year in a home that protects us, not in a fragile tent that shakes with every wind and lets the cold creep into our nights.

I dreamed that my children could sleep without fear, and wake up to the smell of bread — not the sound of bombing.

My wish was simple.

A small home. A safe roof. Warmth that feels like the homes we lost.

I wished I could vaccinate my children, protect their health, and shield them from illness the same way I try to shield them from war.

But the reality is heavier than my strength, and the war has taken away our choices and our time.

In this new year, I am not asking for the impossible.

I am asking for a kind hand, a compassionate heart, and help that can restore a piece of our humanity.

Maybe my wishes will come true.

Maybe my children will grow up remembering that someone stood by them in their darkest days.

We are still dreaming, despite everything.

And we still believe that kindness has not disappeared.🙏

This is Farah. She is a fifteen-year-old autistic girl with kidney problems. Her mother reached out to me several months ago, and I tried to support her fundraiser as much as I could. Then the money of that fundraiser, their second already, was stolen from them.

So I knew the only way I could make sure this wouldn't happen again was by starting a fundraiser for Farah myself. And that is what I did. It was scary, but I haven't regretted it in the least.

Farah's mother, Wesal (@shahdgazza), and I speak every day, now. She has a lot of worries. Six children to take care of. A household to keep running. Providing food and clothes for the family.

She does not have it easy, and her health is not doing so well either. She suffers from migraines which she doesn't want to take medication for, because she would rather spend that money on something else. She also has a herniated disc in her neck that causes her pain, which was likely caused by carrying Farah when she couldn't walk due to her disabilities. On top of that, she doesn't get much sleep, causing her to be exhausted most of the time.

Farah's mother-in-law also suffers greatly. She has cancer and until October 2023 received treatment at the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital that was destroyed by the IDF earlier this year. Her cancer has now returned and she also suffers from kidney disease, though her problem is the opposite of Farah's. Farah's kidneys cannot retain potassium, which causes her body to go deficient; while her grandmother suffers from high potassium, which is a more well-known consequence of kidney disease. You can imagine how difficult it is for Wesal to provide the right kind of food for both of them. But she wishes to give her mother-in-law the care and attention she deserves.

This is the kind of care with which Wesal approaches all things in her life. She divides up her day between caring for Farah, for her other children, for her mother-in-law, raising funds on Tumblr, and organising the household and her daily needs.
