“Someone once told me I shouldn’t speak about what I’m going through because I’d be “speaking it into existence.”
I smiled and gently replied, “It’s already in existence. I’m simply talking to God about something He already knows, and confessing that I need His help in the middle of it.”
Can we just sit with that for a moment?
Somewhere along the way, I think some of us started believing that honesty was the opposite of faith. That if we admitted we were anxious, grieving, struggling, depressed, overwhelmed, or barely holding it together, somehow we weren’t trusting God enough.
But when I read my Bible, I don’t see that at all.
I see David pouring out his heart. I see Elijah asking God to let him die. I see Job asking difficult questions. I see Hannah weeping before the Lord. I see Paul openly admitting his weakness. I see Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, pouring out His heart to the Father.
None of them hid what they were carrying. They brought it to God.
That’s what a relationship looks like.
Real relationships don’t require pretending. They don’t require polished prayers or perfect words. They make room for tears, questions, honesty, and the quiet confession that says, “Lord… I can’t do this on my own.”
God is not shaken by your honesty. If anything, your willingness to acknowledge where you are is often what changes the direction of your healing. Not because your words have power on their own, but because you’re choosing to trust Him with every area of your life, the grief, the struggle, the joy, the uncertainty, the questions, and everything in between.
I think sometimes we spend so much energy trying to sound full of faith that we forget faith isn’t pretending everything is okay. Faith is bringing everything to the One who already knows.
He already knows your thoughts. He already knows your fears. He already knows the diagnosis, the anxiety, the grief, the addiction, the marriage that’s struggling, the bills on the table, the secret tears, and the battles nobody else sees.
You’re not informing God of something He doesn’t know. You’re inviting Him into the places you’ve been trying to carry by yourself.
Oh my, what freedom there is in that.
Please don’t hide your story because you’re afraid of what people might think. Your honesty might be the very thing that helps someone else realise they’re not the only one fighting a battle. Your vulnerability might become someone else’s permission to stop pretending and finally bring their own struggles before God.
We don’t overcome by acting like we’ve never struggled. We overcome by walking with Jesus through the struggle, trusting Him with every step, every question, and every tear.
And isn’t that the Gospel?
A God who already knew the full story, every chapter, every mistake, every wound…
And He came anyway.”
