henry miller is not dead. full documentary.
'documentary. released: 1996. directed by joe kishton. music by laurie anderson.'
ÂŤHenry Miller is Not Dead is an innovative exploration into the life of literary artist Henry Miller. Tropic of Cancer, widely considered Miller's masterpiece, is a reference point throughout the film.
The film brings together interview segments with Miller, film clips, and a stream-of-consciousness format punctuated by the eclectic music of Laurie Anderson. Miller reflects on his tortured relationship with his parents and his personal decision to pursue the life of an artist, despite the implications of financial insecurity. These revelations forge an understanding of his need to create--the basis of his rebellion against society, and his philosophies on writing, painting and life itself. The result is a fascinating portrait of a maverick artist and philosopher.Âť
âTo imagine a new world is to live it daily, each thought, each glance, each step, each gesture killing and re-creating, death always a step in advance. To spit on the past is not enough. To proclaim the future is not enough. One must act as if the past were dead and the future unrealizable. One must act as if the next step were the last, which it is. Each step forward is the last, and with it a world dies, one's self included. We are here of the earth never to end, the past never ceasing, the future never beginning, the present never ending.â

âMy anger scares me, my fear scares me, and somewhere in there is shame, too â why am I so enraged and so scared? I am afraid of going to bed and of waking up; afraid of tomorrow and of all the tomorrows after.â

Rayuela by Julio CortĂĄzar was first published in Spanish on 28 June 1963 (it appeared in English translation as Hopscotch in 1966).
Considered a "counter-novel," Hopscotch includes a "Table of Instruction" indicating that the novel can be read according to a number of different orders (with certain chapters designated as "expendable"), or in an order invented by the reader.
Not only considered to be one of the most important modernist novels of South America, Hopscotch would prove to be highly influential to writers around the world.
This is by a patient of mine with early late stage dementia, who was a poet for most of her life. Her new poems are dictated to me during writing workshops I run at my hospice job. She hadn't written since her diagnosis. This is one of seventeen poems I've written with her so far.
posted with permission from herself and her family.
She died early this morning.
Iâve been doing poetry since I could write but I do think she was my only teacher.
Working with her was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I mean it when I say you all are so lucky to get even this glimpse at the majesty of her work.
In her words from another poem (not posted):
I am not the only creature watching
All of this,
Drinking it in.
I have a companion,
The cat who sleeps in the backyard
Is watching, too,
And there is so much to be.

On This Day in 1964 the US Supreme Court overturned a lower court ruling that found âTropic of Cancerâ to be obsceneâŚ
"If you can fall in love again and again, if you can forgive your parents for the crime of bringing you into the world, if you are content to get nowhere, just take each day as it comes, if you can forgive as well as forget, if you can keep from growing sour, surly, bitter and cynical, man youâve got it half licked."

'He was an old Drag man with his bit getting short. He was the first to attempt to teach me to control my emotions. He would say, âAlways remember whether you be sucker or hustler in the world out there, youâve got that vital edge if you can iron-clad your feelings. I picture the human mind as a movie screen. If youâre a dopey sucker, youâll just sit and watch all kinds of mindwrecking, damn fool movies on that screen.â He said. âSon, there is no reason except a stupid one for anybody to project on that screen anything that will worry him or dull that vital edge. After all, we are the absolute bosses of that whole theatre and show in our minds. We even write the script. So always write positive, dynamic scripts and show only the best movies for you on that screen whether you are pimp or priest.â His rundown of his screen theory saved my sanity many years later. He was a twisted wise man and one day when he wasnât looking, a movie flashed on the screen. The title was âDeath For an Old Con.â'
