Made some meaningful pics over the weekend. The colour is from the new lighting at the Bassment bar, Chelmsford. It goes to show what a difference lighting choices make to the pics. It means not needing to use flash all the time which sometimes kills the ambience. Recently I have been shooting only with my X 100s & X2 rangefinder style micro four thirds cameras. These cameras live colour & reproduce amazing color straight out of the can. These cameras are proving to be the best I have ever used in my life. They perfectly work with my style enhancing the experience of working. I have been steadily shedding gear over the last few months & am now at the stage where I comfortably shoot assignments using natural or ambient light. We really are living in great time. ..

This Tumblr is explores what it means to be a photographer at the birth of social photography & how for the first time we are paving the way for generations to come.  It probably makes sense to take a step back every now and again to see where we’re at.  Have charted a course for ourselves or are we letting tech decide?

socialgood- Having witnessed first hand the power of the photograph & the profound effect stories can have on people.  Changing ideas & points of view in a heartbeat.  I often wonder if the days of “occupy” & the values they propagate are fading into ether as “the economy” starts to pick up again, people r not so angry.  Its a shame because I spent a lot of time with guys & girls of the “Occupy London” demonstrations in the City & I can tell u it felt good to see us fighting for something, together.  This was when we realised the power of social media for sociaL CHANGE.  

We are now experiencing another social superpower, where companies & organisations have started to change behaviour due to social campaign’s exposing companies that are falling short of our expectations. The man on the street can genuinely affect change even more now since companies are joining the band wagon & spending money on social media, realising that these are essential tools both for listening & communicating within industry. We have never before had so much power as a collective.  For once they are listening.  

Its a good opportunity for us to start speaking up when things are genuinely unfair & people are getting hurt, ripped off .  It doesn’t have to be negative.  You can share better ways of doing things with manufacturers or improvements to services or goods.  The world is a giant “focus group”.  

I have found many like minded groups, individuals & organisations through sharing my photography  online on sites like flickr, facebook, tumblr, twitter & of course instagram.  It’s amazing who you can connect with just by sharing a meaningful picture.  

Remember, its not quantity but quality.  If you want your image to stand out then you must post the best possible version, edited tastefully & posted at the right time for your audience.  Try to imagine your audience & put yourself in they’re shoes.  Are you speaking the right language to get message across?

As organisations if you are not thinking in terms of social media strategy then you may as well cut your losses & retire with whatever dignity & money you have left.  

New startups are starting with the social philosophy as a foundation run by a generation that have always known the internet.  The kickstarter generation have crowdfundijng for raising capital. So ideas really do rule. All you need is a great idea & the creative ability to present it to the world.  We know that the future is now social & pictures are the new currency for getting your attention, words alone don’t cut it.  

Pictures are the universal language on earth because everyone can understand a picture & they can be copied, & shared infinitely.  That is not to say that words do not have value, they certainly do especially when they have a picture to team up with & fight for the attention of the audience.
