yeah i don't know what to make of that rumor about a player wanting to come out tbh! we really don't have any way of knowing so i don't see any value in speculating. if that dude exists he's doing what he thinks is best for him, so peace + love there

iirc the actor said it was 'pro athletes' not specifically nhlers. it seems there is a tiny bit more of a glass closet for male athletes in other sports (i think charles barkley said this about the NBA recently) that doesn't seem to be there for the nhl in the same way (from my limited perspective as an outside observer as you very rightly say). just my two cents!

hmm tricky subject because like you say theres the dangers of tinhatting and people taking things to weird places that i don't want to give air to. and to be clear mb definitely dates women lol. it's a little interesting he's comfortable staying single and ready to mingle on a pretty wag-heavy team, so it's easy to play him up as one of the girlies etc. but there's been plenty of guys who resisted settling down for a long time and eventually still did get a hot blonde wife (tyler seguin, jeff carter, etc). so rpfing about him and beau or him being syd martin's gbf is not me actually saying he's gay to be super clear. idk him lol

i tend to follow this line of thinking, that any kid of p much any difference, especially something that teen boys are so weird about like sexuality, tends to get pushed out before elite levels. those locker rooms are so deeply entrenched that i have a hard time imagining a guy playing through that/excelling in that type of environment. on the other hand, i do think there's ambiguously gay stuff that goes on (threesomes, abusive sexual encounters with male authority figures that go unacknowledged, even the dumb locker room stuff like swordfighting that guys like sean avery have talked abt). there's definitelyyyy a culture/pathology among hockey players about group sex and/or group sexual assault, that you can maybe read as some sublimated desire to engage in sexual situations with your homies. but i don't think any of them would recognize this as being "gay" in any real sense. i think their misogyny, homosocial tendencies, team-first brainwashing, all get wrapped up in Ferda. certainly for some of them this might include some unexamined interest in men that they can mentally write off as just "i love the boys". imo sexuality is such a varied rich tapestry and by law of large numbers some of them in league history have probably had some flavor of bisexuality or interest in men. but i find it unlikely that any of them would be able to examine it frankly as "im gay" coming up thru the social frameworks that they did
