365 DC Comics Heroes & Villains Paper Cut-Outs
Patrick Edward ‘Eel’ O’Brian had been orphaned at an early age. Having fallen through the cracks of the foster care system, O'Brian ended up living on the streets. By the time he was a young man, O'Brian had turned to crime and became a burglar and safecracker. His lithe frame and slippery nature earned him the nickname of 'Eel.'
On one fateful night, Eel and his gang burgled a chemical factory and stumbled upon an armed security guard. The guard shot Eel wounding him in the shoulder. The shot additionally burst a vat of strange chemicals that doused onto Eel, getting into his wound and entering his bloodstream.
His gang fled without him and Eel struggled to get away, passing out in an alleyway. He awoke in a monastery with his wound bandaged. A kindly monk presented himself and said that he sensed a goodness in Eel and for this reason he dressed his wound and sheltered him from the police.
The monk’s generous actions motivated Eel that to give up on a life of crime. Whilst convalescing, Eel discovered the chemicals that infected his wound had changed him in a dramatic fashion. His physical form now had all of the properties of rubber, allowing him to stretch, bounce and mold himself into any shape he so wished.
He chose to use these awesome new powers to become a superhero and dubbed himself ‘Plastic Man.’ He and his old friend Woozy Winks opened up a detective agency and Plastic Man would go on to have numerous adventures. Eel maintained his civilian alter identity and pretended to still be part of the criminal underworld so to keep tabs and get the inside scoop on capers he could then thwart as Plastic Man.
Prior to the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, Plastic Man's adventures took place in the 1930s and 40s; and he served among the All-Star Squadron during the Second World War. Following the Crisis, however Plastic Man was retconned into the contemporary era and has been recruited as a member of The Justice League.
Along with serving with the League, Plastic Man also went on mystery-solving adventures with a young woman named Angel McDunnagh. Plastic Man and Angel had a son together whom they named Luke (also known as ‘Baby Plas’). Young Luke would ultimately discover he had inherited his father’s powers in his adolescence and he would go on to become the young hero known as Offspring.
More recently, Plastic Man has joined Mr. Terrific’s team of heroes, The Terrifics. He has since then become a part of the expanded roster of Justice League Unlimited.
Plastic Man has featured in numerous animated projects including his own series, The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show, along with other appearances. Herein the hero has been voiced by actors Tom Kenny, Michael Bell, Norman Alden, Joey Cappabianca and Oliver Hudson.
Plastic Man first appeared in the pages of Police Comics #1 (1941).
