Hi, I'm an artist who's just started trying to post my own OCs and comics and I was wondering.
Do you have any advice for how to better present OCs in a way people will actually find interesting?
Fanart is always fun and I love making it, but I've wanting to try writing my own character. My OC posts always seem to flop though and I was wondering if a more experienced artist/author like yourself might have insight on how to encourage interest.
Eh, I think a lot goes into getting people to like your OCs. There's no sure way to get it but there are indeed things that do better than others.
• OC actions/interactions/little comics will generally do better than portraits or presentable illustrations, even as sketches (they may not get you the numbers but they'll make people feel like they know more about your character, their relationships, personality, etc).
• Images that evoke strong emotions are also more likely to make people connect to the character that's experiencing them (love, grief, anger, etc).
• Jokes/memes/relatable content featuring OCs can make them more memorable and shareable in general.
• Infodumps, character sheets, etc will be interesting to already existing fans of a character but are less likely to engage new people. And so on and so forth
• Should go without saying but art quality (or at least how expressive/unique/satisfying you design and draw characters) and the actual characters (design, personality, story, etc) will also affect engagement
I do want to add that none of these will work in the long run if you're posting with engagement in mind ONLY. People who love OCs (I'm people) love seeing the passion that the creator has for their characters and not someone trying to use them to garner an audience. To me the best way to gather people around your fire is to do what your heart wants to see done and be excited about it, and that excitement is likely to grab a handful of people in time
I'm not sure how to phrase this because I'm dumb but I'll see if I make sense.
Ur the under garden comic, what exactly is the system for the society I guess? Like, there's a matriarchal system of clans and all that in wherever tome 1 takes place. And how the idk kingdom? City? Is run? Because I'm a bit at a loss. And what are ur inspirations for how that sustem works? Or is this something I should just continue to read in the comic and then I'll start to understand? Either that or it is very clear and Im very much dumb as I've stated already 😅
The main setting for the chapters we're in is indeed an insular matriarchal society with 5 clans, each with its leader/matron and a more or less specific function & number of people. Anything that you need to understand for the story will be in the comic itself BUT I can lay it out here too because why not
So here's how the clans work:
• The ruling clan (Dozor) has few members (essentially works as a royal family of sorts) and its matron effectively acts like the main ruler. They uphold power via control of a "guardian" creature that's magically linked to the mountain and its surroundings and prevents anyone from leaving the area, except for the Dozor themselves
• There's a clan (Harcos) that works closely with the Dozor and is responsible for enforcing order and staving off danger within the mountain (where most people live). They're basically the police/military and recruit from other clans to keep their numbers
• There's a clan (Kalur) that's made up of people more adapted to swim and live deeper in the caves, and they're responsible for mineral and food resources (fishing, algae farming, small scale mining, etc). They mostly mind their own business
• There's a clan (Vilk) that lives more on the valley area around the mountain and is better adapted to the outside, and they do the bigger game hunting & manage resources like wood and most of the leather
• The biggest clan (Neimar) live in the largest hollow part of the mountain (the "city" so to speak) and they're sort of the specialists across a wider range of crafts. Builders, crafters, medics, traders, etc.
(The naming conventions are an amalgamation of vague northern/eastern european names because I like them)
Resources-wise, the things that wouldn't naturally be available to people in the real world are available to them because I say so (ie there's magic and things we don't have in the real world so I can wiggle around). Economy-wise, they run a rudimentary sort of trade based economy in the city and have a currency (shiny rocks) but the further away you get from it the less relevant that becomes.
They're ALL unable to venture far from the mountain because the guardian creature has a radius of influence that will just kill them, unless they're Dozor (there's a system in place that binds people's names to the magic field and they're exempt). Outsiders are also barred from getting in. The reasoning behind this is a spoiler (:
Power is passed from the Dozor matron to her eldest daughter and other living members of the clan get [spoiler] whenever a new matron takes over. They can select and absorb people from other clans too
In terms of inspiration, initially this story was a DnD thing so obviously it was drow inspired but I threw that out the window and limited the similarities to colour scheme, the matriarchal thing (though it isn't as harsh in this society as in the drow lore) and caves
The outside world they're geographically closest to is an empire that for the most part doesn't know of them, except for a small settlement not too far from the mountain itself that does kiiinda know something's up but has no interest in interfering

Hey Maf I've tried to take your example and work on smaller resolutions, and now I'm wondering, if you printed them to a5, what size font does it need to be to be legible?
I've used a lot of 7-10 and it feels like it might be too little? Or what do you use if you print your stuff?
I work smaller and then resize, but in the A5 template I have (1819x2551px) this is roughly 12-13px in font size. I wouldn't go smaller but I'd say maybe down to 9-10px would still work
Random but do you have general tips to draw humanoid character with animal ear without their human ear while not making it looks weird or uncanny?
The main tip I have regarding any form of humanoid stylisation is to use human anatomy as a base and sort of morph from there.
In the case of ears, it's worth understanding what components make them up and how they need to shift and change relative to other elements of the head/face to look like a natural extension of the already existing anatomy VS something added onto it and out of place
Personally, I also try to make sure the rest of the face gets adjusted and more angular/"animal-like" to make it mesh better with the ear shape
One thing you don't want to do is add the hair and then just sort of paste ears to the top of the skull without thinking about how they play with the jawline
