a writing prompt. PART 01
✦
ㅤㅤㅤㅤwhen the excitement of a travelling archivist and their helper spread across the school, hajun ceased whatever he is occupied with at a drop of the hat ―― figuratively and literally speaking ―― just so he can rush to the hearth room. with the flyer in his hand and folded neatly into his back pocket, the linguist couldn't help the awe that took him as he observed the activity in the room, both of magical signatures and people alike, and he'd let his feet drag him to start anywhere. perusing, browsing, grabbing whatever that piqued his interest at first sight regardless of the price that accompanied the books and scrolls that now filled in his arms.
after a long time of internal debates, hajun carefully stacks these titles on the archivist's counter:
simple spells for sunny days. do you consider witchcraft fun?
a thesis on physics and magic. do you prefer the physical or nonphysical aspects of magic?
consecration in the modern age. what is the one thing you hold most sacred?
parables and poems from a past life. who were you in a past life? what life did you live before this one?
ㅤㅤㅤand if he places a pause on his classes so he can read everything in weeks to come or if he has to compromise on a loose schedule to make this happen, then it is what it is.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ 𝓯or the first set, the researcher finds it easier to compare both books together and place them side-by-side. the first book had seen better days, judging by the faded title on its spine while the other begged to be chosen, tucked in between the ancient and the bold. inside, the pages are not entirely blank, but neither are they fully written. the ink seems to lay heavy where his eyes meet the canvas, and each word forms where his gaze lingers —— as if each page tries to remember its contents, and the strokes end up making the titles inconspicuous:
ㅤㅤ 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜.
do you prefer the physical or nonphysical aspects of magic? &&.
𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬.
do you consider witchcraft fun?
ㅤ there is a faint, almost imperceptible lift at the corner of his mouth.
fun is not the word he would use.
witchcraft, to hajun, is survival. it is a way of life rooted from nature, transformed into being through magical abilities passed from one offspring to another, and how the surviving traditions in tongue, movement, and attunement of a witch are drawn from the divine. "what constitutes the divine" as another subject for another day, one that defines transcendence for each practicing witch and familiar—— hajun returns his thoughts to the extensive and intensive training it took him to get to this level instead.
how witchcraft became the foundation for his way of life, as a means to exist. how his grandmother's love echoes beyond time and space, pouring most of her life and energy into creating the magical structure in which hajun's magic does not continuously burn his soul away with every unsaid thought, with every unchanneled power without a reliable anchor. how witchcraft honed his sense of restraint and precision through language and intent at all times, lest he experience incidences that invite irreversible destruction.
one time, the young boy remembered the unfamiliar hallways of wood and stone, enclosing the scent of decay that followed his footsteps.
he recalled how his parents once brought him down to show the grand collection of his ancestors, knowledge gathered from every corner of the globe and protected by their family from those who did not take kindly to the truth of this world. it was no sooner that this dream always end the same way —— the earth brought upon its wrath on their ceilings, breaking each timber and concrete and tearing through the olden runes embedded in it, dropping onto ahn sejeong and ahn jung-ah while hajun could only run towards the chaos and scream wildly with all his strength for everything to stop stop stop st—
ㅤ ❛ [ STOP ! ] ❜
then, ahn sehyeon's heart stilled.
struggled in arrhythmic sequences, as the old woman dropped to her knees from losing most of her strength in waking her grandson from a terrible nightmare, and before her heart collapses in the next second, she was able to deconstruct his spell.
the space settled, like something nearly broke ... but it didn't.
hajun's heart, in turn, withered.
as they huddled together in her bed, he did not leave his grandmother's side until she had to wake him in the morning after he had cried himself to sleep for the rest of the night within her arms.
ㅤ ever since then, witchcraft, for hajun, is ORDER. it comprises of various disciplines in symbols, crafts and a hundred languages wherein a witch and familiar can choose to express their definition of nature and exhibit it in their own self-concept. this is how witchcraft is —— the quiet corrections within a misaligned world and existing systems; the way a door closes properly when it should and the way a room eases into silence without being asked.
but there are moments.
the way a spark returns to a student's eyes when they perfectly landed a counter from hajun's offensive blows, taking confidence in destabilising his flow in friendly fires. the way when irang's magic does not coincide or conflict with his, thrumming in the background like live wire but he learned to not get electrocuted from its input or its owner. the way simple low-level spells with the slightest intention lands cleanly per his expectations, not a syllable or flow wasted; not one body harmed because of his negligence in keeping himself and his ability in check.
in those moments, there is something close to relief.
then, there is joy... in reflecting on how learning magic and sharing what he experienced with others through teaching brings him peace; helps him to connect and navigate the world that she left behind for him. brings him something definitely lighter than duty.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ witchcraft, for hajun, is healing.
ㅤ ❛ ...it can be, ❜ the professor says quietly more so to himself, testing the shape of the thought as he spoke it into reality. after reminiscing the essence of the first book, hajun reaches out to turn the page on the thesis and finds its resistance. the fiber stuck neatly to the next page, as if refusing hajun unless he acknowledges its hypothesis on the current content. to this, his gaze sharpens slightly, head tilting curiously towards a dysfunction he rarely meets, thanks to his magic.
for hajun, a magic researcher, physics and magic contain a false dichotomy.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ 𝒎agic does not exist separate from the physical —— in fact, it is expressed through physical manifestation. nature, in its tangible and intangible forms, uses witches and familiars to physically express itself through magic. magic, in its tangible and intangible forms, must be anchored to a physical means, so it may easily be perceived by the senses in the third dimension: for example, in sounds and music, natural elements, written and spoken language, kinesthetic dances, ritualistic trinkets, and so on and so forth. while these thoughts race in his head, hajun immediately grabbed a pen to jot down his comments and leave his mark on this copy of the dissertation; its tip glided smoothly on paper with less reluctance from before, as the ink flows with every turn, every stroke.
the literature supports his grandmother's hypothesis in proving how magic is first manifested through thought and intent in the space within the caster's mind, only to be transformed into the world through physical or symbolic anchors. and without structure, clarity and precision to express this magical intent, the magic outcomes are often volatile and unstable, posing risks to themselves and everything within their environment.
ㅤ thinking about it, even perception —— his resonance —— is not intangible.
his ability manifests as pressure, tension, correction; ensuring almost anything that exists within his field complies to the principle of nature regarding order. his magic constantly seeks equilibrium, making sense of the world in predictable sequences, patterns and flows from the most minute details to the most elaborate spell works.
it is the way that the room stays at a proper temperature despite hajun forgetting to close the windows that invited the winter breeze, or the way that dust never found a place in his room, never been taken with his clothes or shoes. it is the way that hajun can recall someone's magic signature after he'd met them once, as he mentally places descriptors of how he perceived and felt their magic even before they knew what its effects were to another person, and even without them casting a spell or crafting a potion.
and so, if he were to be asked what he prefers between the two, hajun already knows the answer:
ㅤ ❛ i prefer what is observable. ❜
not visible to the naked eye, but he thinks of observable phenomena.
deviations. irregularities. stability.
the way magic behaves in a meticulously guided flow or under constraint.
the nonphysical aspect of magic is unreliable without structure. the physical, at least, can be measured——spells, potions, witch and familiar bonds, and rituals——even if imperfectly.
and hajun has always trusted what can be measured.
a new routine he has, or– he has always had this routine. people watch. at home, from his balcony down to the street. in the academy, from the tall trees down onto the ground. he doesn’t really want anything to do with this. in the library, from the top shelf. paws dangle from the edge of any shelf he will occupy and students will look up at him fondly. he has been hesitant to approach. any other witch could be his match, but nothing yet. loneliness is a curse.
as a cat, people like him more. as a human, he’s much more quiet. a man, filled with sentences like yes, thank you, pleased to see you, the receptionist will help you with your payment. he doesn’t say much. what’s wrong with him? the thought crosses his mind as he makes way off the shelf. the teacher has brought his attention several times. he doesn’t know what it means. nothing in him feels drawn to him, the way a familiar is meant to feel towards a witch. maybe he just wants attention.
he sits for a while. he’s noticed eventually and haein inches closer when it finally happens. what he does, when he needs attention, something. he’s a cat. he’s a cat now, he’s going to stay this way, probably until tomorrow. he steps onto the book and then closer. he lays down over the pages and he stays still.
loneliness is a curse.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ 𝓹erhaps it's the way his magic adjusts to a new presence within his field, or hypothetically it must be his decreasing focus that hajun's reaction is several seconds delayed. normally, the man would brace himself from an incoming scratch or swipe at his face, arms, anything of his that a feline's paws can get on. he has accepted it early on that most animals find him unnerving, as much as he finds other people's signature uneasy to ignore, but as to why? hajun doesn't have a clue yet.
and so, the linguist steadies, recalling the familiar grazes that he typically receives from weolju, especially whenever he attempts to show affection or whenever she awakens on the wrong side of her bed on a bad day. brown eyes follow the cat's movements, cautious but not eager, and only sighs in relief when they found a comfortable spot in between the book's pages. for once, this might be one of the rare cases that he hasn't been hissed at in less than a minute.
ㅤ ❛ i would take that as a no, then. ❜ he gently removes his hands out of the way before the weight settles in, careful not to jostle or spook his new visitor; ensuring that he keeps his arms resting on the armchair instead. when he feels confident enough to examine his guest, hajun slowly lowers his face to lean in sideways and meet them eye-to-eye. ❛ i don't remember seeing you before . . . there are a lot of strays that tend to linger then leave, while others prefer to stay. maybe i'm wrong, but are you one of manager meow-meow's friends? ❜
the professor focuses on this newfound discovery and partly on a thoughtful approach, that if there were any traces of another recently arrived familiar's magic around, he would barely notice it unlike the usual.
ㅤㅤ ❛ i'd say he's one of the remarkable residents here... but i'm uncertain how turfs work with you guys. ❜

The Ahn Library
Hidden underneath the estate lies the vast wisdom retained by renowned magic scholars and advisors for generations. Accessing this wealth of knowledge is permissible only through an invite from a member of the Ahn, as its entryway is created from various ancient runic constructions and signature magical flows tied to their bloodline. The magic community is aware of the Ahn's archives, but its scale and location are only privy to the awareness of few, most particularly shared carefully within academic circles, such as magic engineers, architects, researchers and the like. They said that the records preserved in this space is unimaginable, and Hajun can attest that even he has to spend an entire lifetime to study all resources collected by his ancestors.
sorry for the late replies or threads i owe, will get to them as soon as i can.
on other note pls let me know if i write too long, i feel like i do because hajun rambles and feels a lot and i’m too afraid to ask. everyone’s tags are neat and clean and tidy so i don’t know what i don’t know sweats
juyeong could see that this library had long since surrender to the chaos as books lay scattered in uneven piles, with some stacked in uneven towers, and others flung open as though interrupted in mid-thoughts. the scent of old books and even older tomes seeps into her sense as she waltzes through the aisles, her cold gaze sweeping across the shelves with an unwavering focus, reading the titles of every book that piques her fickle attention for just a moment. from time to time, she gathers several tomes and books into the crooks of her arms, holding them close as she continues on.
there's a rare sense of excitement in the way she explores the library, her eyes wide with a hungering ache for the knowledge now within arm's reach. it almost feels like she was a child again, wandering through the vast space in search of senseless adventures hidden within the pages. if given the chance, she could spend hours— perhaps even days, within this very library. but alas, juyeong is only here to collect all the materials she requires for her research.
it doesn't take long for her to notice hajun standing nearby, lingering in between the shelves. only then did she finally remembered; that this library had belonged to his family, and he had granted her the courtesy of borrowing a few materials from the place after she had asked ... or rather, demanded. the longer she remains, the more apparent it becomes— the subtle stiffness in his posture and the all-too cautious way his attention follows her, carrying a faint edge of unease beneath his gaze; one he might have concealed, if not for her prowess in sensing fear.
juyeong simply gathers another tome into her arms, her expression unchanging as she walked towards him. "where are your father's potions?" she more or less demanded as she carefully sets the stack against a creaking table.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ 𝓻eturning to the place where it all started isn't exactly included in hajun's plans after he made peace with beginning afresh through permanent residency in the institution, filling his days with grading essays, magic instructions, and occasional breaks in the routine by strolling in the city every once in a while. for its size and rooms, the ahn estate is too big for one person to live in and knowing that @morsense eunbyeol will most likely join him if she knows has further pushed him to accompany her in the life she settled in, away from the remnants of sentimentality and death, within ways he knows how.
it has not even been a year of his grandmother's passing that everything hit him at once: the lingering scent of sympathy, suspended condolences that echo in the hallway, the residues of her flow ―― safe, resolved, fading. every step has been heavy from the moment he arrived from the entryway, through the corridors and into the heart of what is once their home where knowledge is shared preciously instead of being feared and judged. the man unconsciously heads to the section where ahn sehyeon once stood,
...her lithe frame becomes thinner every time he sees her in his memories, and he had to check his side twice to confirm the presence of afterimages by his grandmother, walking to her desk or reaching a scroll above her from the shelves.
hajun holds his breath, waiting until she disappears,
until his eyes watered and the next second he blinks,
he finds ri juyeong instead.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ( he doesn't like this sensation.
feeling too much, but never seeing.
this kind of magic flow――
elusive, haunting――it makes him uneasy. )
ㅤ ❛ he ... did not have surviving materials left. ❜ unnoticing how he expels his breath with a slight shake before he fixes his composure, the linguist's stare is more drawn towards the papers in her arms, and how the stacks of books around them feel as if they were going to fall, but they won't. they keep hesitating more than usual. ❛ but my father, he made the formulas accessible to recreate. from what i remember, my parents and halmeonim sometimes worked together in using stabilising spells and parameters when testing the potions. abeoji can be excessively creative more than what is accounted for... ❜
the researcher approaches her, calculated and carefully side-stepping, as he passes by to search for the section where his father's works are archived. as if there were cobwebs draping on his shoulders, hajun shrugs unconsciously and continues to browse a journal that he retrieved. ❛ preservation is, unfortunately, not our strongest suit. we find quick scribbles more convenient when pursuing our curiosities that we rarely have the time to record them properly, or at least, that's how ahn sejeong was. easily distracted? yes. near ineligible writing? he tried. so, if you need help transcribing, let me know. ❜
flipping the book open, he shows juyeong the table of contents; an index finger running through the list. ❛ my father's records all throughout the globe, particularly in asia and china. his approach blended traditional medicine, spellcasting and rituals in potion crafting to counteract magical curses. any ideas in mind of what specific types of potion you're after, @hvartstrings? ❜
what resonance perception is:
an analytical type of magic ability that identifies, analyses, and recalls pattern recognitions and structural interpretations in magic flows and spells. hajun anchors the active usage of this ability through "spellcasting" (or what he specialises in: essolinguistic casting). additionally, resonance perception supports passive + active usage.
what it isn't: does not increase magic power or innate magic perception. it enhances how perceived information is processed and understood.
limits:
cannot read thoughts, know unknown magic instantly on the spot, perfectly analyse a caster's magic without prior exposure, bypass any magic complexity without effort or study.
passive usage
this state is intuitively and automatically always on, low-level, non-intrusive; may sometimes require low-level one-word or 1-phrase spells depending on context/uses; prone to leakage if not properly trained or constantly controlled.
sense and mentally store other caster's flow signatures (memory + pattern recognition of a magic flow's characteristics, a witch's casting tendencies and timing habits).
notice magic instabilities or timing irregularities especially to spell works ("this feels like XYZ person's casting" or, "that caster's flow is unstable")
being familiar with other witches' flow signatures require prior exposure and repetition. hajun cannot predict what other witches' magic will do or instantly master any unknown/complex magic.
in day-to-day life,
as hajun's ability constantly and continuously reads micro-variations in magic flow and structure since he first manifested and also considering that his resonance perception is aligned with the nature's principle of "order", his movements, timing, manner of physically interacting with his environment, and his presence are always slightly more precise than normal.
therefore, things around him may appear more stable because his magic ability reduces error before they become full instabilities through precise interactions. in daily interactions, people may have the perception that things just "work" easier around him.
what it isn't: not passive casting (depending on context, hajun still has to use low-level casting or one-word spells to define subject, scope, duration, action); no permanent environmental or object manipulations; not reality manipulation.
examples of what this feels like in hajun's daily routines and may even be felt by other witches/familiars: ambient noise suppression (within hajun's defined scope/duration); less chances of things spilling or breaking in his presence; consistent room temperature control; less chances for people to trip over in his presence or for him to twist an ankle while walking; dust do not settle on his clothes at all; books neatly stacked regardless of him throwing something recklessly on top of it.
limits: these effects only apply through his presence and direct/indirect interactions & does not persist after he leaves a room or area. it does not extend beyond these factors, nor override other witches/familiar's magic. hajun also needs to release low-level casted spells if used before leaving his surroundings.
risks: hajun's ability may unconsciously risk "over-stabilisation" ── which may come across as a feeling that is unnerving or uncomfortable for people, like something is being held in place and everything is too unnaturally clean, tense, perfect, too controlled or slightly forced. conversations end too quickly, someone's grip over their mug tightens too early, most animals especially cats find him or his presence uncanny because nature is supposed to be wild, chaotic, unpredictable and everything that he is not; subtle things like that. over-stabilisation is usually caused by stress, hyper concentration, or emotional instability.
active usage
in this state, resonance perception gives him the information about magic flow and spell structures; and spellcasting helps him determine the outcome/response against another caster's magic.
requires: focus, exposure to a specific magic or spell, available cognitive bandwidth, controlled emotional stability.
limits: hajun cannot instantly understand unknown or complex magic without prior exposure; do not guarantee correct interpretation; act without ample processing time; bypass skill gap or magic level that is higher than his.
under extreme pressure/risks: too many inputs and he's overloaded, therefore the analysis slows or breaks. his spells also might misfire or cause temporary environmental distortions. in severe cases, physical follows psychological and cognitive states, so if overpowered constantly and consistently, hajun's exhaustion and drain catches up for collapse/blackout/vulnerability.
as an individual caster, hajun is great at reading incoming magic, identifying and analysing its weak points and timing gaps, then responding or editing his spells to match the other caster's output in the moment. he excels in disrupting unstable spells, redirecting or reducing magic impacts, exploiting timing errors, and influencing the other party's magic into inefficiency. overall, his ability is considered more as a single - target control / precision casting rather than DPS or AOE. additionally, he is a close melee combatant and probably have yet to master or think about long - range defense / offense tactics.
in group casting or team play, hajun is better utilised as support / control / utility rather than combat-focused, as hajun's magic can help level the playing fields between factions. he doesn't carry overwhelming damages or dominate through scale, but his ability helps destabilise opponents and temporarily affect the environment to their advantage. in other words, he doesn't hit harder, he makes sure you miss your mark. agility - based witches/familiars and constant pressure that don't leave him the time to cast/respond may potentially stagger and/or defeat him, but think of it this way: hajun doesn't start fights, he finishes them as swiftly as he can.

past; first meeting,
following hajun's arrival
✦
ㅤㅤㅤㅤ𝒊f there was one thing to add on the list of questions that hajun possessed ever since he arrived in the school several days ago, he knew that he would never run out of ideas regarding the various flows of magic present in the school. while it was fair that most things were obscured and privy only to the headmaster's knowledge, hajun couldn't help the curiosity that urged him to explore the hallways, every room, every nook and cranny, and mentally taking note of how different kinds of magic from numerous witches and familiars intersect but never conflict, never spark and break the current circuitry that kept this place intact.
( ... perhaps the school is also dependent on the restraint of its residents and visitors alike? )
for the days that followed his arrival and settling in this institution per his grandmother's will, the magic researcher wrote this kind of thoughts in a pocket notebook that accompanied him from time to time. while his ability ought to passively correct the environment that will suit the source of his magic, nothing can beat pen and paper in quickly jotting down the interconnected theories that tend to branch from one simple query. for today, hajun saved the best for last: an inquiry regarding the spatial magic involved in the teachers' room.
ㅤㅤ when hajun had been sure that most staff vacated the premises, he did not waste time in inspecting every wall and window, surveying and following the sensations of magic flows and where they concentrate, where they lag. after he is satisfied with the initial survey, the man discreetly aimed to chip off a sample from the doorway; crouching next to it and feeling the internal stress points with his fingertips, sensing the physical gaps where his spell can break its properties atomically...
or at least, that was the plan before he pauses to acknowledge the presence of a newcomer.
ㅤ ❛ it's exactly what it looks like. ❜ nonchalantly and with a clipped tone, hajun says without much thought; his eyes unfocused and gazing past the other while most of his mental faculties are running in the background. ㅤ ❛ ...come back later once i'm done. ❜

ㅤㅤㅤㅤ𝓽urning pages after scanning each one, the sound of crisp paper breaks the silence every now and then; sometimes, followed by motions of fast scribbling, paper laid still on the wooden table, before the tip of his pen dance on its surface. with a different sensation from the usual drag and pressure when holding the writing instrument, order is prominent in the way his thoughts translate neatly and with less resistance, the space in between words and the strokes are even and consistent, and decisiveness embedded in the lack of accidental blotting. hajun makes use of the time to read through submitted applications for the class while waiting for the next student in line, someone he reserved the entire afternoon for.
ㅤ ❛ miss nam, there's no need to wait. you may enter. ❜ the man says without looking up —— already sensing the flow of her magic nearby, particularly around the entryway to the classroom. for the long time that he gained the privilege to work with nam juwon, hajun has already catalogued the predictability in the spikes of her flow, mentally noted in the archived signatures within his mind. it is fortunate that within that span, he learned to install basic runic safeguards as a failsafe protocol within the room before any spellcasting classes ensue; and whatever advanced ideas for improving the system will be later on discussed with @runeink jiho when hajun gets the time.
once he pulls a paper with her name on it, the professor finally lifts his head for a proper greeting. hajun stands from his seat, holding the paper with one hand and the other reaches for his nape, as he stretches his neck. walking around the table before he leans against the counter, crossing his legs as his heels and passive magic supported the balance and stability of his chosen position.
ㅤㅤ ❛ welcome to the spring semester of this class. ❜ his tone is softer than usual, a good mix of conscientiousness and mindfulness towards the repeater this year. shoulders relaxed, pausing and waiting for her to speak up at any time. hajun didn't want any misunderstandings to start off their learning journey for this month and the next ( or so ), after all. ❛ i know there had been delays provided that the blood moon hunt had been the focus last month, but i hope that you've been well. tell me, what have you been up to lately? ❜

ㅤlike how all magic are sourced from nature, all witches can naturally employ basic spellcasting; it's innate in our flesh and blood to sense magic currents from the sources of our power and possess sensitivity towards others' magical flows. historically, spellcasting originated from traditions and family blessed with magical prowess, where spells were often memorised as poems and songs and integrated into ritual performances, passed down from one generation to another (ahn, 19XX).
the spells of old times were usually long, poetic and full of imageries and symbolisms, and easily drains the witch depending on the situations where it is used. these intricate spell works require more magic than modern spellcasting, and its effectivity increases when applied with other tools such as candles, trinkets, mirrors, and other objects that is significant to the witch's source of power and ability, or chanted in ritual performances. whereas, the ahn scholars contributed to understanding and improving the mechanics of basic spellcasting while observing efficiency, precision, control and intent in being attuned to a witch's source of power from nature. from what is currently known, advanced spellcasting does not require the use of magical tools or mediums to amplify its effects; and it can be easily applied in other functions (i.e., combat, sensory tracking, etc.) besides daily life.

MODULE I ▬▬▬ CONTROLLED EXPRESSION
KEY PRINCIPLE ---- Say only what you can control.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL ---- Beginner 【 D ➔ C 】LEARNING OUTCOME: Single-step commands on single targets. Students are taught to integrate clear and precise "intent" in their casting.
ㅤ
MODULE II ▬▬▬ APPLIED CONTROL & REAL-TIME RESPONSE
KEY PRINCIPLE ---- Wait, then act when it becomes clear enough to influence.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL ---- Intermediate 【 C ➔ B 】
LEARNING OUTCOME: Focus on 1-word commands; and developing short phrases that gradually define the subject, scope and duration of a spell. Students are expected to detect irregularities in their own magic and respond accordingly to a situation, while practicing emotional and magical control.
ㅤ
MODULE III ▬▬▬ SYNCHRONISED CONTROL & STACKING
KEY PRINCIPLE ---- Link commands and layer control within your limits.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL ---- Advanced 【 A, B 】
LEARNING OUTCOME: Using all the skills acquired from Modules 1 and 2, the students are guided to apply 2-command phrase stacking while sustaining their emotional control and magic response in highly supervised, dynamic environments. Attempting a third command is not advised —— please be reminded that without sufficient mastery or supervision from an Expert - level Essolinguist, the spells may result in severe cases of cognitive overload, semantic misfires, and environmental distortions.
𝐈𝐈𝐈. 𝐄𝐍𝐑𝐎𝐋𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 + 𝟏-𝐨𝐧-𝟏 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐔𝐋𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒
this course is developed to accommodate most, if not all, witches regardless of the source of their magic or abilities. since essolinguistic casting is recently studied as an advanced form of spellcasting, this class is experimental and can only be handled by Expert-level Essolinguist casters ― including your instructor and the pioneer of this discipline.
as it is originally created to support witches that rely on language and intuition to safely cast their magic into spell works without endangering themselves, others and influence distortion in their immediate surroundings, ahn hajun made it possible to understand and analyse magic at its theoretical roots for the caster to adjust the spells in real-time application with short preparation. with ahn's resonance perception, the magic researcher created a breakthrough in how we understood magic; his findings supported his predecessor's hypothesis about the nature of magic, "magic that responds too quickly to intent, without sufficient structure, poses a risk to both user and their surroundings" (ahn, 19XX).
* TO NOTE :
observing the safety protocols, the class will enact small groups where 4 students are the maximum count in one class. your instructor will group batches based on the compatibility of all students' powers in whole.
while the practicum will be observed individually or by partners, lectures and exams on the theory and history of magic and spellcasting will be done together with the rest of your classmates. collaboration between batches is allowed; cheating is not!
MODULE 1 will observe group casting, spellwork demonstration, & theory exams and written essays. MODULES 2 AND 3 will be on an individual basis, ensuring that you are supported towards your specialisation.
1-on-1 CONSULTATIONS are greatly encouraged. please notify your instructor to schedule an appointment —— and dm me ooc or tag me in a starter. with your participation, hajun typically designs a learning plan for your muse depending on their source of magic and abilities.
at the end of MODULE 3, the student will be given the choice to complete the course by doing a final practicum with ahn hajun, or partner with another witch. passing requirement: defeat your chosen opponent in real-time casting application.
if you are taking classes from another teacher, please include this information when first contacting ahn hajun for enrolling in this class, so he can coordinate your training and ensure consistency in your progress.
* INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATION SESSIONS :
rather than teaching spells, hajun's expertise and ability assists witches to redefine how their magic functions entirely. basically, you bring a magic problem to him; he helps you fix it. by his understanding of magic theory, spells only fail or misfire when they do not have structure, precision, or control, or the intent and clarity are misaligned with the magic output. as of now, hajun can only handle single casters, and he's not fully equipped to coordinate group casting yet ( nor he has an interest to ).
Resonance Diagnostics --- by observing a witch's casting in real-time, he is able to read flow patterns, instabilities, and timing issues. he also assists in analysing what went wrong with the spell work. in deconstructing a witch's source of power and ability, hajun uses the lens of nature's principles. useful for magic accidents, unstable magic users, ancient/prohibited spells.
Ability & Identity Alignment --- most witches use their abilities instinctively and ends up misunderstanding their own limits. hajun's insights in how you think when you cast, and what is your magic actually doing helps to improve your timing, mental sequencing, and decision making when you cast in real-time. this is for the overthinkers, indecisive, and/or emotionally sensitive witches.
Instability Control --- helping to cast spells as control anchors, limitation rules and emergency shutdowns for when your magic overloads or misfires. useful for witches drawing from high-risk magic source, with emotionally reactive magic.
Custom spell systems --- tailors the casting according to a witch's source of power, ability, and strengths.

ㅤㅤㅤㅤ𝓾pon hearing about who the victor is, the sequence of that night comes in flashes within the next couple days after the event. he remembered considering whether to go solo albeit unadvisable for reasons etched in history, then the scene of a woman approached him for forming a team, and everything fell into place conveniently.
hajun did not mind sticking to the minimum of a duo: the way he and han dove worked together had been efficient, bearing less potential for mistakes as everything was easier to coordinate. the man was aware of the inadequacy of his knowledge regarding group casting, so he suggested playing by their strengths and covering each other's backs instead. with his sensory tracking skill, hajun led the way as he marked runes on several trees they passed to create an 'alarm system'; the idea of having the creature zip by a tree with hajun's magic will immediately notify him of its whereabouts. meanwhile, the bell stayed with the student, with instructions to ring it once every thirty seconds to a full minute while the linguist extends the field of his passive skill. giving credit where its due in the scent of iron permeating in the air and how the metallic drag of her magic have woven into arteries and muscles, how the redretch dissolved in her skin and hajun had to run to reach her before her body dropped on the forest floor, the man never forgot to take mentally catalogue the sense of oblivion that followed after her ability disperses.
ㅤㅤ several days has passed since miss han had been in bed rest, from what he heard. similar to the amount of time that hajun had been back to his routines, occasionally having to brush the cobwebs of magical remnants that tend to cling on him more than what usually diffuses from most witches. he cannot speak for how others process the magic in the environment, but for most of his life, it was survival to control the extent of perception. see too little, see too much ... both options leading to one outcome anyway, paying the price. paying the price, however, has different rates for every witches —— and when he heard the blood witch has woken and recovered, hajun waited until he could speak with her freely on a coincidence of meeting each other in the hallways; or at least, what hajun can say as an excuse rather than actively seeking her out.
ㅤ ❛ miss han, it's good to see you. ❜ rather than curiosity, well-meaning gaze overpowers the eagerness to ask about other things than what is in the present. ❛ congratulations, about winning the hunt. you've done well. i suppose you already had been properly looked at, and all things are in order? ❜

❛ the dorms are at the other side of the building, not here. i must say, it's too early to be breaking curfews now. ❜
when the leopard stirs, irang knows better than to try and ignore it. he had been through it before, learned the hard way. the memories of the consequences burned into his mind: the feverish nights, the violent shudder through his body as fur pierced through his skin and the acidic burn in the back of his throat as he struggled to hold it together. it hurts because you're fighting it, his aunt had said. a soul with two forms, that was the nature of familiars. but the other half of him felt more so like a fickle roommate, the kind that likes to humiliate him, slipping out a tail or growing whiskers over his human features at the worst possible time.
tonight, the beast paces behind his ribs, its low growl vibrating against his spine. patience seems to run thin as irang approaches the library. amber light bleed through the cracks of the mahogany doors, the warmth a direct contrast to the rest of the building, submerged in a monochrome world at this hour. it ignites a strange, misplaced fight-or-flight in his gut.
still, he steps closer. inside, the delicate scent of herbal tea clings to the air. subtle and bitter. his instinct nudges him forward, while the rest of him resists. the sole of his boots barely brushing the carpet, his eyes fleets as it observes the area, until finally, landing on the back of the man's head.
the voice intercepts before he can decide what to do. it causes a sharp flicker of irritation, a jab beneath his ribs. with a quiet sigh, he steps out from the shadow of the shelves.
"i'm the one who gets paid to enforce curfews," he mutters, his annoyance bleeding through more than he intended. then, his gaze dips briefly. the untucked hem of his uniform, the unbuttoned collar, his tie shoved carelessly into his front pocket—right. he clears his throat. "... you always talk to people before looking at them?"
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ𝓯or a witch who relies mostly on verbal expression, hajun stops himself before the irrelevant words escape his lips. tone, intonation, pressure, context —— these are the essentials to understanding what is being communicated and manifested in the physical realm; emotions, on the other hand, are temperamental variables to calculate. the fact that he almost allowed sarcasm to disrupt the stillness he needs to uphold is a feat, and the witch does not know yet whether to be astonished or alarmed that these finer details of being bound to a familiar has not been disclosed.
he sighs, slow and prolonged, metaphorically closing the archive cabinet in his mental library after signing the folder with the name < 𝙷𝙾𝙽𝙶, 𝙸𝚁𝙰𝙽𝙶 > on it. ❛ i normally don't talk nor look at them unless necessary. ❜ the truth suspends in the air, its owner overlooking the nuances and implications in between every syllable —— rather, he has long ago forgone whatever is taken or left after each encounter. all that matters in the present is the remaining focus towards the window as his brown eyes observe the silhouette of the woods, awaiting exhaustion to hit him before the dawn breaks. ❛ have you heard? eyes are the windows to the soul. see too little, see too much, doesn't matter. both require too much work. humans ... are always high maintenance. ❜
ㅤ ❛ so, i make it easier for me to just know. to sense anything, without unintentionally trapping myself in social constructs that do not require high prioritisation, ❜ hajun continues softly this time, lifting a hand to rub his right eye while his left hand supported the cup. unknown to the rest of them, he can sense the hesitation of the carpet to crumple, on the area where the other's soles barely interacted with it; and how the light from the side table flicker slightly in response to a subtle spike in hajun's magic flow upon detecting the strands of connection, then maintaining the electrical current buzzing through its wires. ❛ you're not as sleek as you think you'd be, you know. maybe for other people, but not me. you're welcome to try harder though. ❜
the witch did not make the effort to turn his head and meet the other halfway. he knows. logically speaking, the concept of red threads and fate is irrational —— and here they are, two people who barely know each other being bound by the universe without their say to this cosmic decision. a fairy tale for most, and hajun wouldn't be surprised if this is a nightmare come true for the stranger. where hong irang sits, between familiarity or formality, is something that the linguist has yet to understand. if there are any research about severing bonds, hajun wouldn't hesitate to give the familiar what they would likely want: separation.
ㅤㅤㅤ after all, who would want to be intimately known and understood thoroughly more than one recognises themselves?
ㅤ❛ if you're here to drag me to bed or talk with me about us, ❜ hajun waves a hand and gestures between them. ❛ then, it can wait later in the day. for now, i've brewed a pot, and it's sitting on the kitchen counter. call a truce and grab a cup, irang. ❜

at the hearth room
✦
ㅤㅤㅤㅤ𝓼ince the passing of the blood moon, it has been peaceful. for people who did not like to stay still, hajun can hear them in the back of his head, saying that it's awfully quiet. awful is a strong word, one that hajun does not mind especially when it concerns his peace.
the weekend rolls in along with the seasonal changes. the temperature is still cold during late march, but the crisp air and lack of crowds make the trips outdoors worthwhile. while the professor normally likes to go for a stroll considering a time when he can gaze at the snapshot of winter, snow melting and flowers blossoming, he remembers the tasks ahead of him. scrolls and letters littered his study table as sunshine filters through an open crack in between his windows, while a cup of coffee sits in the middle of the clutter, gone cold.
hajun understands the significance of mis-en-place, recalling the satisfaction of a job well done, but he also understands the awful tingling in his muscles. limbs aching, wrist sore from writing, and they beg him to go ―― somewhere, anywhere than spending most of his day cooped in his room like usual. the thought hadn't really crossed his mind until his conscious drifted out of the zone and he felt the fatigue comes in small waves, reminding him of his failure to notice that the sun has been up hours ago and hajun has been awake since dawn.
ㅤ and so he sets off to the end of the hearth room with a book in his hand, passing by the residual waft of breakfast he'd accidentally skipped as he makes himself comfortable in a lounge next to the fireplace. from his peripheral vision, he notices how people begin flocking in once more and only then it registers that lunch is several minutes away; therefore, he arrived during one of the peak hours. taking a deep inhale and exhaling slowly, hajun imagines a bubble around him before casting [ ❛ Silence ❜ ] under his breath, then he settles in the comfort of the spell that enclosed him in.
like turning a radio's volume down, the background noise around him gradually transitions into quietness before all sounds completely cancels out. akin to the sensation of being submerged underwater where soundwaves travel slower, however, hajun's conditions for [ silence ] bound anything within his immediate vicinity to null, as he lived his seconds in pure stillness. his spell does not fully embody the powers of a witch whose ability manifests silence; rather, hajun can still feel the vibrations around him, the ebb of magic flows mixing with each other, the way the chair drags across the floor, but the difference is there is no presence of sound, and his spell lasts as long as he maintains it. temporarily.
next, he opens his book, turning a page before shutting his eyes.
no sound.
the low-level spell lands perfectly clean.
it continued like this for a while, as the rest of his fingertips glide across the dots engraved on each page, and he feels like he's home. what constitutes a while and himself is blurry in what seems to be the next several hours. only when he consciously decides to pause his reading did he notice another presence within the invisible barrier that contained his spell, eyelashes fluttering open and adjusting to the light before his sight lands on a ...
ㅤㅤ――― cat?
the man gives it a look. the spell is still underway, so regardless of how gentle or loud a movement can be, the world within his boundaries is muted. focusing his intent on loosening the conditional magic upon himself, hajun's voice cuts through the defined zone of silence with a command, releasing the spell enough to exempt the feline from his magic.
just enough so he can hear it respond.
ㅤ ❛ hello, little one. ❜ tone still laced with grogginess from not being used for a day or two, or perhaps, it is the body's natural response for reaching near its limit of prolonged wakefulness. ❛ i haven't noticed you've been there for a while. are you lost? ❜
