eva stratt knew the governments around the world wouldnt work together unless they had a common enemy. she knew that even the astrophage wasnt enough of a common enemy because they didnt know how to punish it. she knew that famine and drought and freezing temperatures wouldnt be enough to unite the world. they needed an enemy, a scapegoat, someone they could physically team up against and physically punish and physically chase down.
and so she took up that role. she made people hate her. she made sure everyone turned against her in the end. because it would help them survive. it meant that theyd live. it meant that they had the will to fight. even if it meant she had to be locked up and tortured and starved but never allowed to die. even if it meant she had to constantly be on the run.
even if it meant that one of her closest friends would hate her for the rest of eternity 16 lightyears away.
