Four years ago, I was carrying more than I knew how to name.

Twenty-six years in a marriage that taught me abuse could look like love if you stayed long enough. A family who still chooses his side, so I learned to love them from a distance instead of losing myself trying to be chosen. A grief I never let myself feel for the people I lost along the way.

Recovery didn't just get me clean. It taught me to rebuild — one impossible decision at a time. Going back to college in my forties. Becoming a substance abuse counselor so my pain could actually mean something for someone else. Packing up a life and moving to South Carolina to start over. Falling in love with my best friend and learning what safe actually feels like.

None of it happened because I was strong the whole time. It happened because I finally stopped abandoning myself.

So when I look at this photo, I don't just see four years clean. I see a woman who spent 26 years disappearing, now standing in a field in broad daylight, on her own two feet, taking up space, smiling like she means it.
