Jamie was headed up to Manchester this evening for his mum’s birthday. It’s her 50th, so he wanted to make a fuss of her. He was planning on staying the weekend and a few days at the start of the next week too, and he had cleared the time off with the coaches ages ago.

Then it turned out that the MOT was due on the Aston Martin — something he would have noticed earlier if he ever used his own car these days, the amount of time he spent in Roy's ugly G-Wagon was getting ridiculous — and it had to go into the shop for some body work and a tail light to boot before he could put it in. Fucking Colin, but that's what Jamie gets for leaving his car at Nelson Road for days on end.

In a fit of Sam-inspired eco-minded conscience, he decided to take the train rather than hire something else, and when he’d told Keeley that he'd be gone for almost a week, she’d made a big deal of the fact that they should come to the station and wave him off. He hadn’t quite gotten why, but Roy had agreed, and from there it had spiralled into plans to spend the whole day hanging out in London together.

Then Phoebe’s mum had thrown a second spanner in the works. It was November 5th, and Phoebe’s class had a school trip that morning to do a tour of the Houses of Parliament, learn about Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot. But Roy’s sister had picked up a shift to cover for a colleague, and she’d asked Roy to meet Phoebe off the coach at school that afternoon.
