Sergio -

He's a classic. From time to time we get inspired by automotive works. So, here's a portrait of our good friend Alex's Honda CB250 Café Racer: Sergio.

  Lighting:

Alien Bee - B1600 45* angle front of the bike

Alien Bee - B800 - pointed right at the wall w/ Red gel

YN565 - Handheld pushing light on the rear bits of the bike

Two KinoFlo's, but those were mostly for aesthetic.

Tad late for the holiday season, however, inspiration struck and we had to oblige. I don't think we're 100% on this yet, but maybe by next season :)

Out thought process on the image was to drag the shutter slightly (1.3 seconds) to get some glow from around the Christmas lights while using strobes to expose Wally (the disgruntled subject & famed A Likely Story photographer). In hind sight we probably should have used a third light overhead to light the brow lines a bit better.

So, we love boom shots. While learning studio lighting we'd come across these amazing dramatically lit shots & it seemed most of them were with booms. You get this highlight across the hair, and contrasty shadows under the brow.... all tasty stuff. We had enough of the envy and purchased a boom. Its a Manfrotto. 

Here's a little BTS of our first shoot with it & one of the retouched images produced from the set. In this image I also used a new retouching technique for the skin. If you're interested in seeing some of the technique, use the "ask" and I'll make a video or something.

Karla Jimenez Sano shot at Cocoa Pier. You can see our set up here. For location shoots we typically use a 1 light set up. Nearly every time we use a Paul C. Buff Einstein 640WS strobe head powered by a Vagabond mini with a 22" Paul C. Buff Beauty Dish, however on occasion we'll use a PLM or a 47" Octabox. We also use Pocket Wizard Flex TT5's for triggers.
