to us yoongi is obviously very good-looking, but from his situation it’s a more complex issue and we have to understand.

first, it’s impossible to see himself from the outside. in mirrors, you tend to focus on singular features, not the bigger picture. yoongi already has problems with his mental health, we can’t expect him to magically have esteem and look at himself with lenience. that high standard to how he should carry himself will probably make it worse. his reserved nature playing into that on top of it. how he looks like to us we can’t really force on him against his belief and state of mind even if he clearly is quite a sight. 

second, height bias is alive and well. yoongi is particularly small, in the entertainment industry where everyone scrutinizes you on top of that. yoongi doesn’t get the amount of praise he should in that environment even if people do think he’s great-looking. the only thing koreans actively and positively comment on is that he is paler than the other members because colorism. and the public... watch any video like these. we can do better yoongi stans, it’s like he doesn’t exist. not even honorable mentions or any compliments in there 😒 (same w/ joon + hobi)

that he should be regarded the most handsome i’m not saying. what i wonder about is why yoongi’s appeal is so completely invisible to people like what the fuck?? although: to be fair, all the yoongi stans are locked in their homes, we don’t like to go out to the street and give interviews 😅 anyway. 

third, it easily shows when he gains weight and that is the #1 biggest taboo in kpop where idols get queued by managers in front of scales for weight checks. it’s a boy group and bighit is not as strict as sm, but bts pretty much internalized that standard of control by themselves to a degree. even yoongi’s mom always points it out to him so you have two parties having expectations and yoongi is likely feeling very watched and put down by this, especially the dieting spiral during comebacks.

fourth, yoongi has no glamorized (!) equivalent. to get compared with other idols is one thing, to be his own brand the other, finding a trope. which always helps with popularity and thus self-worth. the post where i compared D2 to levi ackerman is still blowing up my notes, you see how people’s minds work. sub-categorizing and interlinking helps people gauge and prize someone’s looks fast. you need to fit an archetype.

jin looks like someone in a drama, jk like a fitness guru and so on. yoongi can only be compared to himself, did you notice? there’s no larger pop culture phenomenon comparison possible, no mainstream ideal. none. i mean even levi is an outlier, a 2D character. and mostly known for his strength and ability to inflict extreme violence which trumps looks perception when it comes to guys. yoongi doesn’t have that. he tried to find a reference mark in al pacino because of the height. but even that didn’t catch on since yoongi still looks so different from anything you’ve ever seen (unless you know his clones aka CL and woozi but that’s about it 😂).
