“I can promise not to disappoint you,” Louis said, a bit startled by his own confidence. There was something heady and intoxicating about this one. Something surging rather loudly in his blood.

The boy lifted his camera again and snapped another. “D’you know I rather believe you can?” he said, his smile pouring honey into his low voice. “But then what’d you do with me? I’d be banging down your door for months, begging for another night while you’d be moved on to the caterer or the DJ without a second thought.”

“Ah,” Louis said. In those days, tequila agreed with him quite nicely, but even still he was feeling extremely cavalier that night. He reached out and tousled the other boy’s hair, let his hand linger a while. “It’s romance you’re after.”

“M’afraid so,” the boy shrugged, pretending at nonchalance though he was leaning a bit into Louis’ touch.

“Won’t help, I suppose, for me to tell you all that’s a myth?”

The photographer shook his head. “No, I’m still too young and optimistic for good sense, I think.”

“S’a shame,” Louis said, finally to the front of the line. “I would’ve enjoyed making a mess of you.”
