Dawn's arm extends to her right. In her muddled, half-conscious mind, she expects to feel May lying there. Instead, there is nothing but cold, empty sheet.
Dawn moves her arm up and down, as though expecting to find her lover hidden amongst the blankets, or perhaps curled up atop the pillow. Instead she finds nothing, and this is unacceptable.
She sits up, bleary-eyed and yawning. The sun has not risen yet, and inky blue envelops the bedroom. It takes a moment for her eyes to adjust.
Something, a vague sound, echoes faintly from the kitchen downstairs.
Dawn trudges out of bed and down the stairs. A light shines through, no doubt from the open refrigerator. In the middle is May's hunched-over form.
"Come back to bed." Dawn grouses.
May jumps and whirls to face her. A bite of sandwich dangles from her lips, which disappears instantly.
"I got hungry." May whispers. There's no trace of abashment in her voice, though she never displays such with this situation.
Dawn just stares, eyes half-closed, hair askew. It's enough for May to get the message. She closes the fridge door, wraps her arms around Dawn, and together they slip back under the covers.
The alarm is unceremoniously thrown out the window when it starts beeping 15 minutes later.
