"I will not choose," Míriel said firmly. "Not - not until I have to. I can - talk to him. Perhaps he will have an answer." Finwë had spoken to her of things akin to this, she recalled, in the name of being wholly truthful to each other. She could not say as much to Indis now, but… there might be hope.

She blinked rapidly, and gave her beloved friend a weak smile. “What would I have done?” she murmured, feeling a surge of nerves at the thought of what she was about to do. “Melissë, I would have done this.” In a burst of courage, she leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on Indis’s lips, cupping her cheek in one hand.

The word melissë made her gasp, but in the next moment Míriel's lips were on her own, and suddenly Indis could not think. Her hands moved, in helpless fluttering motions, from her own lap to Míriel's shoulders to her silver hair; one hand was still wet from the fountain, but she found she could not care.

The kiss was gentle and chaste, and when it was over Indis could feel the blush gathered high on her cheeks and ears but paid it no notice. Hope remained yet. "Melissë," she repeated, and leaned forward slightly, so their foreheads lightly touched. "Would that I had had the courage to speak my feelings sooner."

"I do not know if it is just the same," Míriel replied cautiously, "but you have always been precious to me, in a way very few have. I treasure you as I do him -"

She cut off, swallowed hard, and shook her head. “Why should a choice like this even have to be made?” she said bitterly. “I do not want to hear you speak of coming between us.” Straightening up, she rested her arms around Indis’s shoulders and looked her in the eyes. “Had I known you felt this way, I would have done something before. But I will not deny what you are to me.”

Indis' breath stuttered in her throat, and her heart seemed to beat against her chest like a bird against a cage. "I never -- I did not mean to make you choose. He so dearly loves you, and you him, and I did not lie when I told you I was happy for that union."

Míriel was so close now, nearly close enough to kiss; she dazzled Indis' eyes, like the Trees, like the stars. "But ... I am curious. What would you have done, if I had told you before?" she dared ask, and almost feared the answer.

And there it was - the truth, and her hope confirmed… and something hard to consider. A long, tremulous sigh came from her lips, and Míriel finally looked up once more, blinking back her tears. “Why did you never speak of this before?” she said softly. “Indis, I - don’t you know how dearly I have cared for you? Why suffer in silence?”

"You --" Indis' breath caught in her throat; she was trembling; how could this be? "You love me, just as I love you? I never dreamed it could be so. You and he belong together -- I could not come between you even if I wished it. But if you love me too ..." She trailed off, bewildered, uncertain.

Tears welled up in Míriel’s eyes, and her breath came shakily as she bowed her head. A strange hope and shame were writhing together in her heart, and she could not meet Indis’s eyes.

"We - we do not choose love," she said quietly. "We only know it when it chooses us. Do not speak of having done this to yourself, I beg you. Only… please, would you… tell me who you have come to care for so?" She could not assume - would not, for how arrogant would it be?

Was Míriel weeping? The thought that she had caused her distress made Indis' heart contract painfully; rejection she had anticipated, but she had never wished to harm; ah, but Míriel was waiting, and she must answer. The words issued forth in a quiet soft sigh, in a breath, in a heartbeat.

"Can you not already tell? I love Finwë, my friend, steady as the sky -- and I love you, my friend, bright as the stars."

"Oh…" Relief was quickly followed by uncertainty, and Míriel bit her lip, sitting back on her heels. "Well… glad as I am there is no physical trouble, I have to wonder… who is it you love so that it has done this to you?"

Indis' eyes dropped to their hands, one of hers clasped in both of Míriel's, and she drew another breath before continuing, and hoped she would not sound as pitiful as she thought. "Two dear friends, whom I love more than anything or anyone else in the world." She paused, and in the sudden nervous quiet she licked her lips and went on, "But it is not they who have afflicted me. Even as I chose them to be the companions of my heart, I knew that they had already chosen each other and each other alone. So you see, I have quite done it to myself."

"Afflicted?" Míriel felt a pang of concern, and shifted to kneel facing Indis, taking her friend’s hand in both of her own now. Afflictions were not something she was used to, here in Valinor, save as legends from the Journey. "With what? Have you spoken to anyone of it? Has this been going on for very long?"

"A figure of speech!" Inadvertently a giggle escaped her, and she shook her head and drew a deep steadying breath. "A figure of speech, Míriel, nothing more. In songs and poetry one might refer to love as a kind of sickness, mightn't they?"

Míriel’s cheeks darkened, and she ducked her head with a smile. “You’re very kind,” she murmured. “But you’re welcome to watch me - as I watch you so often.” She gave Indis’s hand a little squeeze. “I really do hope you’ll like my latest work.”

The strange tone to her friend’s voice gave her pause, and she leaned against the fountain with a wistful look. “Are you sure you’re all right, meldënya?”

"Thank you," Indis said softly. "I am certain that I will love it."

She squeezed Míriel's hand in return, but had to look away from her friend's gaze, and with her free hand she traced the water still. She had not intended to say anything; but then, she should not hide such a thing from such a dear friend, and it had been hidden for too long. "I must admit I have been out of sorts recently. -- Afflicted, one could say."
