The radio silence continues
Breeding season is in full swing here and we’ve got a lot going on this month with the holidays so I’m afraid we won’t be posting a whole lot but please feel free to continue asking questions if you need advice or just want to shoot the breeze. It might take a while to come back to you but I’m trying to check once a week at least
Time! And why I don't have enough to post here
Reptile cleaning, feeding and interaction. 48 hour work week. My sister's wedding. NanoFuckingWriMo. I've been taking photos of cleanups and snakey activities but GUYS I DON'T EVEN HAVE TIME TO BROWSE TUMBLR. So that is how keeping a massive reptile collection and trying to still have a life works. You can't get 5 damn minutes to upload photos to your computer to post on a stupid blog. I'M SO SORRY. I will rectify this. In about a month probably.
Royal reproduction is...messy.
In the process of cleaning vivariums and rubs yesterday, one of my bigger females who is on schedule to breed this season, decided to tell me it was time. Now, normally I would try to cool to encourage this and start considering starting to pair in mid November time depending on the individual females etc. Yesterday, as I was cleaning bowls and moving from a males tank to hers, she made it very clear she wanted access and now. Evidently picking up on male pheromones, she began tail wagging to "entice" the nearby male. Sorry sweetie, you're just not my type. However, as I knew who her intended partner was for this season, despite him not having been cooled yet, I thought I'd try my luck and leave them to it for a few nights. Once he was in there, within about 30 minutes, she had "scented" a huge portion of the tub. As a keeper, my instinct is CLEAN IT. But royals? They like it messy and during breeding season, it doesn't matter how offten you clean it, if a male and female are in there for any length of time, someone is going to end up covered in excrement. And so, it was left. This afternoon, my two first timers are in together and all locked up. This is one of 3 very exciting clutches we're trying for this season. Wish us luck!
What does a month of reptile care look like?
We do everything on a schedule here to ensure all of our animals receive appropriate care, no one gets neglected and the workload stays even so it's never one overwhelming day of DO ALL THE THINGS. Each one of those boxes, represents more than one animal and a list of different tasks. Spot the day off! (Pro tip, there isn't one)

I have been in work for 4 days, 12 hours a day, back to back
Man, I'm sure glad that's over. I can't wait to kick back and relax, play some videogames? Watch some TV? ...clean up a whole bunch of poop.
Again.
Here is Tesla exploring his new digs after I pulled everything and gave him a complete cleanout.
And here is Tarzan, the angriest little snake in the world. She's going into shed which is why she looks so dark. She's actually a really bright silver normally. Her new larger water bowl is arriving tomorrow with any luck as she's due an upgrade!
Unlike some of my other royal pythons, Sephia is not kept on the cage-lining, bio-degradeable, hyperabsorbent material I like to use but instead on a mix of cypress mulch and coco husk. Why? Because she permanently starves herself otherwise. Nice.
This is a shot of Alice the ghost boa returning to her favourite hiding spot in her nicely filled 32ltr rub after literally every last thing has been cleaned. She managed to poop directly on both plans, smear it on all the hides and then swim around to clean off in the water bowl.
She will not be in this for much longer. Early next year, we're having the boa's adult vivariums built.
Kato, returning to his own 32ltr post cleanout. False perspective makes this look tiny for him but I think that's partially because of where the big cork hide is sitting. He's actually about 400g smaller than alice these days.
We haven't decided on permanent dimensions for the vivs yet but i'm thinking 6ft x 3ftx 4ft with some kind of shelving/platforms built in to give them a range of places to explore/rest as they get bigger.
Liara being mad because she's still in her quarantine setup. I like to keep them in quarantine for at least 6 months, however, the main reason she's in quarantine still is because this is actually a pretty decent size viv for her as she's growing slowly and she is doing very well.
Other than the time this lot took, I spent an additional hour checking everyone for signs of going into shed and ensuring those who are coming into it have a suitable moist hide available.
Maybe now I can rest? Forgot to feed the skink.
Food preperation time!
No one due for a feed tonight and I'm still sick so here's some photos of a couple of babes post total clean out. Mir, the lesser has just finished shedding. Marcy, the super pastel orange ghost is just starting.
No update today
I'm sick as a dog. My animals will be sorted but I can't get my head straight enough to write anything detailed. Sorry folks! Updates soon!
Snake people of tumblr; in your opinion, for you how many pet snakes is too many pet snakes? How many snakes do you currently own? And how many snakes do you plan on owning?
I don’t think there is a set number of snakes which is too many. It depends on the owners resources....
Rainbowsnakes opinion +1 with the addition of "When caring for your animals becomes a chore to the point where you start neglecting your duties"
Hello and welcome!
Today is the day of my first post to this blog and honestly, i'm not entirely certain how to go about this in a way that's interesting because this is pretty much a blog about animal maintenance.
Animal keeping is fun. Animal maintenance is not.
I woke up this morning with the absolute worst migraine i've had for a long time, so animal care was not the first thing on my mind I hauled myself out of bed and spent the next 2 hours in a room that was way hotter than I could cope with.
I think i'm probably sick or something.
"But Ray, if you're unwell, surely you should take the time to recover. Your animals can last a day or two without constant monitoring, right?"
So here is the thing about keeping a collection of animals and will be the primary point I will be making, reiterating and reinforcing.
The work never stops.

I regularly hear stories of people who’ve bought their first snake/lizard and within a few months or as much as a year, are proudly talking about their extensive collection.
Sadly, these collections are often found a few months or a year down the line being shifted on because the owner “just...
