They say hope is the only thing stronger than fear, but you know... Lately I've been so scared. Scared because people I love are actually arguing that racism doesn't exist. Scared because they're confused as to why my blood boils when they dismiss #BlackLivesMatter when I'm not black. Scared because they can openly agree with the deportation, destruction, disrespect and abuse of Mexican people just like me and my family, while claiming "But you don't count, you guys are different." Scared because God is being used every day to justify the abuse, discrimination and even murder of human beings. Scared because people whom I grew up with are arguing that women should know better than to drink that much, dress that way, go where they go, do what they do...hopping on this disgusting bandwagon of shaming and blaming the victims. Scared because people who have hugged me, told me they loved me, are proud of my hard work, and talents and contributions to society are voting for a man who has said that I don't belong here. A man who claims that pride in being Mexican, makes me less able to do my job. Makes me somehow Un-American. Yes friends, I was born in Juarez, Chihuahua Mexico. He is talking about me...not just this distant group of people who have nothing to do with you. Not just "undocumented immigrants who come here illegally" as you like to argue. He has made it clear, that it doesn't matter to him when or how we got here. We don't belong here, and as human beings we don't matter. I am scared because I am seeing my muslim, gay, and black friends fighting every single day to be safe. To be heard. To be seen. To be loved. To be accepted. To be protected. To be happy. To know that their country stands by them. I am scared because the little babies I hoped to have with the man I love are starting to look much safer by not existing. Not in a world like this. ....and still I hope. And still I dream. And still I have faith that you will find that God you love to shove in my face and really know him. Really know his purpose, his grace, and his love. And still I pray that if you don't believe in God, you'll at least remember me. Your friend. A woman. A Mexican-American.
