As a caretaker, it was extremely tricky to figure out things someone with esophageal cancer could eat, as it causes difficulty swallowing and even the risk of choking. There are support groups online and plenty of recipes for purees, but keeping up protein and nutrients can be hard. Hereās a list of things I could think of so far that have helped us on this journey (Iām not a doctor, or dietician):
Liquid foods; soup/broth, smoothie w/o seeds, milkshakes, juice, jell-o, popsicles
Protein; eggs, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, peanut butter, powder mixes
Nutrition shakes, many to choose from
Try crushed, or divided multivitamin
Avoid large meals, acidity, spicy hot, seeds, nuts, pasta, roughage like vegetables, fruit skin, or whole grain
Swallowing is difficult, but try hydrating and remember liquid food counts towards your daily water ounces
Other soft foods include; yogurt, pudding, cream of wheat, brothy pastina, mashed potatoes, avocado, bananas
Calories are your friendāadd in olive oil, butter, cheese, unflavored protein powder
Eat what you feel comfortable with!
Different doctors might have different opinions on a few of these, but ultimately you should do what you feel comfortable with doing. One doctor told us no to all pasta, including pastinaābut we found having a ratio of mostly chicken broth with it was okay. If you have started chemotherapy treatment with Oxaliplatin, most people get the cold sensitivity, so unfortunately milkshakes and anything colder than room temperature become off limits.
