Cal formed The Lightman Group with his partner Gillian Foster whom he met while they both worked at The Pentagon and she was his psychologist. Cal was born in Australia and raisded in England. As a child Cal's mother was in a mental hospital and comitted suicide. Cal studied the last video session his mother had with the doctors, trying to find what they over looked which led him to discover micro expressions. Cal spent some time in Africa perfecting his ability before he went to work at the pentagon.

Cal and Gillian have a strong trust and chemistry between them and they often struggle with the unspoken boundaries of their relationship. They are very close, though it is revealed that his love for her may be more than that of a best friend.

Cal was previously married to Zoe Landau and shares custody of their daughter Emily, who means the world to him.

Cal has a history of gambling, and continues to step out of line with the law when it comes to helping an investigation or otherwise.

Emily Lightman

Gillian Foster

Gillian Foster founded The Lightman Group with her partner Cal, whom she met while working at The Pentagon. Gillian was comfortable with her job as a psychologist at The Pentagon until she met her new patient, Cal Lightman. As Gillian spoke with Cal during his sessions they gradually became friends, and after a while Cal asked Gillian to form The Lightman Group with him. At first she was reluctant, but after some convincing she agreed.

While working with The Lightman Group, Gillian was married to Alec. Problems arose in their marriage when he and Gillian adopted a baby girl named Sophia, and after 57 days of bonding with and loving her, the birth mother decided she wanted her back. Gillian was devastated and needed to talk about it, but Alec refused. After Alec cheated on her, and began to use cocaine again Gillian and him divorced.

Over the years Gillian and Cal became best friends, and undeniably, there is chemistry between them. Gillian finds Cal difficult sometimes and she doesn’t always approve of his reckless decisions that often leave her cleaning up his mess. Yet despite their differences, Gillian and Cal have a strong relationship, and they love each other. They often struggle with the unspoken boundaries they’ve set in their relationship, and admittedly, Gillian often questions if her feelings towards him are more than that of a best friend.
