There was a pause.

A very long pause.

“Wait. What?”

You laughed. “It’s nothing.”

“Nothing?”

Lando sat up straighter from the couch, his whole expression changing.

“Y/n, you got promoted.”

“Yeah, but—”

“No. Don’t ‘but’ this.”

You smiled despite yourself.

Because suddenly he sounded more excited about it than you were.

“You worked so hard for this,” he continued. “Do you even understand how cool this is?”

“It’s just work.”

“It’s not just work. It’s something you wanted. Something you earned.”

You went quiet.

Because Lando wasn’t saying it just to make you feel better.

He genuinely meant it.

Lando was celebrating you in a way you never thought to celebrate yourself.

“It’s nothing, really,” you shrugged. “Just a small thing. I’d honestly be kind of mad at myself if I didn’t get it.”

His eyebrows immediately pulled together.

“Would you say the same thing to me?”

You looked at him. He didn’t let you speak. 

“If I won another championship, would you tell me, ‘It’s basically nothing, Lan. You should’ve expected it’?”

The second he said it, you felt something twist in your chest.

Because no.

Never.

The thought alone felt wrong.

“That’s different,” you argued quietly. “Your work is not the same as mine. My work is not that serious.”

“Why?”

“Because, Lan… you’re literally a Formula One driver.”

“And?”

You opened your mouth, but nothing came out.

“It is serious, baby,” he said, softer this time. “Your work matters. Your goals matter!”

And somehow, that was the moment.

Not when you got the promotion.

Not when you saw the email.

But when Lando looked at something you had already dismissed and made you see it the way he did.

Yeah.

You knew you chose right.

OSCAR PIASTRI . ˚ You knew Oscar hated shopping.

He had never tried to hide it.

The first time you dragged him along, he made it very clear that he didn’t understand how anyone could spend hours walking around stores just to “look.”

And yet, somehow, he kept coming with you.

Even today.

You were already in the third shop, holding up another outfit in front of him while he stood there with your bags, giving surprisingly honest opinions.

“Okay, what about this one?”

Oscar looked up from his phone.

“It’s nice.”

“You said that about the last one.”

“Because it was also nice.”

You laughed. “That’s not helpful!”

He shrugged. “You asked if it looked good. It does.”

You looked at him for a moment.

Oscar Piastri, who hated long shopping trips. Oscar Piastri, who would rather be doing almost anything else.

And yet he was still there.

“Isn’t this boring to you?” you asked.

He didn’t even hesitate.

“Yes. Very.”

You blinked.

“Yes?”

“Yes.”

You laughed. “Then why are you here?”

Oscar looked genuinely confused by the question.

“Because you wanted to go shopping.”

“But you didn’t have to come.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

He looked at you for a second, like the answer was obvious.

“I like spending time with you.”

And somehow, that was it.

Not some huge romantic gesture.

Just Oscar willingly spending hours doing something he hated because he liked being around you.

That was the moment you realized.

Oscar wasn’t the type to say a lot.

He just showed up.

CHARLES LECLERC . ˚ You didn’t think Charles was the kind of person who remembered small things.

Not because he didn’t care.

Actually, it was the opposite.

He cared about so many things that you assumed the little details would get lost somewhere between everything else.

So when you mentioned it once, you didn’t think anything of it.

You were sitting together after dinner, looking through the dessert menu, when you pointed at one of the options.

“Oh, I love that one,” you said casually. “But they never have it anywhere.”

Charles looked up from his menu.

“You like that?”

You shrugged. “Yeah. It’s probably my favorite.”

And then the conversation moved on.

You forgot about it.

Completely.

Weeks passed.

Life got busy. Schedules changed. You had a hundred other things to think about.

Until one evening, Charles showed up at your door with a small box in his hands and a smile on his face.

“I brought you something.”

You looked at the box, then back at him.

“What is it?”

“Open it.”

Inside was the dessert.

The exact one you had mentioned weeks ago.

For a second, you just stared.

“Charles…”

He looked slightly confused by your reaction.

“What?”

“You remembered this?”

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Of course I remembered, chérie.”

You laughed softly, shaking your head.

“You know I only mentioned it once, right?”

“Yes.”

“And you still remembered?”

He shrugged like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“You liked it.”

That was his entire explanation.

You looked at him for a moment, realizing something.

Charles wasn’t remembering things because he was trying to impress you.

He remembered because when you spoke, he actually listened.

MAX VERSTAPPEN . ˚ You knew Max loved padel.

Everyone knew Max loved padel.

It was one of those things that made him genuinely happy. A few hours where he could forget about everything else, joke around with his friends, and just enjoy himself.

So when you texted him about your IKEA disaster, you weren’t expecting much.

I think I bought a wardrobe that’s too complicated for me.

His reply came almost immediately.

I have padel tonight.

You smiled.

I know. I’m not asking you to come.

A few minutes passed.

Good.

You laughed at his very Max-like response and put your phone down.

You weren’t expecting him to show up.

Which was why you were completely shocked when someone knocked on your door an hour later.

You opened it.

Max stood there.

With a toolbox in one hand.

You blinked.

“Max?”

“Hey, schat.”

“What are you doing here?”

He looked past you, directly at the half-built wardrobe taking over your apartment.

“I’m fixing that.”

You stared at him.

“Weren’t you supposed to be at padel?”

“I was.”

“And?”

“I cancelled.”

Your eyebrows lifted.

He shrugged, already walking inside.

“I can’t risk that thing falling on you.”

You looked at the wardrobe, then back at him.

“That’s your reason?”

“Yes.”

“You cancelled padel because you’re worried my wardrobe might attack me?”

“It looks unstable.”

You tried not to laugh.

“You’re ridiculous.”

“Maybe.”

He picked up the instructions from the floor.

“But I’m also right.”

And annoyingly, he was.

You watched him sit down on the floor, completely focused on building something he had no responsibility for fixing.

“You know you didn’t have to come, right?”

Max looked up at you.

“I know.”

“Then why did you?”

For a second, he looked genuinely confused by the question.

“Because you needed help.”

Simple. No dramatic explanation. No making it a big deal.

Just Max showing up because, in his mind, that was the obvious thing to do.

And as you watched him fight with IKEA instructions instead of playing padel with his friends, you realized something.

Max loved you through choices.

if he were to step a foot on in your department, you were pretty sure applause would echo off the walls. this guy had done more fore crime solving using linguistics than your entire team ever had, and his endless knowledge sort of terrified you.

and maybe since then, he'd started to use the east wing elevator abnormally often. and maybe you'd exchanged numbers. for the sole purpose of keeping eachother in the loop during important cases, of course.

and maybe you were tired today because you'd spent all night exchanging texts, and your brain was beginning to turn into mush from the hours of sleep it'd been denied in the previous weeks.

all because of the boy who stood on the other side of the room from you right now, with his arms crossed and brows knit together while he listened to something the unit chief was saying.

"the unsub we're looking for seems to be leaving hidden messages on the crime scenes," agent hotchner explains, not bothered in the least by the number of people hanging onto his every word.

then, he adds.

"the letters have been collected, and as of now they're our primary focus. we believe an in-depth analysis might help us with the profile."

all around the bullpen, the air was charged.

agents taking notes while the team just stood there, shoulders high and gazes unwavering, like a silent affirmation of their superiority.

you wouldn't have appreciated it, the condescendance lingering in the air, aiming to make you and your colleagues feel somewhat impressed.

not if it wasn't for spencer.

the boyish brunette who was leaning against a desk - his desk you presumed, based on the precise alignement of the books displayed - whose eyes on you could be felt from miles away.

prentiss spoke up next, arms crossed in authority.

"with this guy, danger is imminent. he's escalating, and that's why we called the IB. we need more experts on the case."

something the woman said didn't quite register in your mind, your attention focused on keeping your gaze away from spencer.

a blonde one you recognized as penelope led you to the conference room, and you simply followed like a stray puppy yearning to get his owner back.

no one needed to know.

not as the team gathered around the round table, specifically asking you to join the meeting in hopes of receiving your expertise. in the room of qualified profilers trained to spot miscalculated glances and fleeting touches, with eyes like lasers piercing through the illusion of lies, you had to pull yourself together.

spencer made it a difficult task.

“i was thinking i could quickly go through all the letters the unsub wrote to try to find a pattern. i'd just need access to the archive room to find old files, i've worked through a similar case before.”

quick words, evidently suggested like he’d invented the alphabet himself. you almost smiled when you remembered something he said two days ago, in that exact same nonchalant tone.

“studies prove key elements such as sharp angles, uneven pressure or stilted writing can reveal traits linked to psychopathy." he adds, apparently finding the watch around his wrist more interesting than you, sitting across from him.

hotch asserted himself once more.

"actually, the bureau wanted the input of a real language analyst for this task," he said, sharp jaw nodding in your direction. the focus in the room shifted on you as he said your name.

the smile you gave felt forced, pressured by the half a dozen pair of eyes on you. only one made your heart beat faster for all the wrong reasons, and they belonged to the one who knew you as more than a name on a badge, a piece of chess in the game.

"morgan, you'll help her with the profiling. everyone else, i need you on the field"

morgan ?

the man in question gave you a welcoming grin, and though you were hoping for someone else, you nodded in return. for some reason you swore you heard spencer swallow, adam's apple sticking out, and you felt your a slight pinch of something that almost tasted like disappointment.

you weren't a profiler.

you couldn't have known - and he was grateful for that - that the reason he kept his gaze down and hands to himself came from an irrational part of his brain he didn't know existed.

the one that was jealous.

so he gathered his files and abruptly got up, leaving you with morgan as the rest of the team headed back to work, without even looking back.

turns out the dark skinned man had more to himself than flirtarious smiles. you two worked side by side all morning and he helped you delve into the files.

and before you knew it, you'd managed to keep spencer in the back of your mind for hours.

at lunchtime, while snacking on a granola bar, you caught yourself rambling about the meaning of commas in the unsub's letters. your excitement was contagious.

"gee," derek laughed, cutting you off with a chuckle to remind you he couldn’t keep up.

"you're like a female version of reid or something."

you stopped chewing. looked up, alerted. attempted to wipe away some unwanted crumbs and dreamy grin that had appeared on your lips a little too naturally.

"i'll take that as a compliment."

"trust me, pretty girl" he said, giving you a reassuring wink that might've led you to think he knew more than he let on, "that's a compliment."

the door opened.

he stared. spencer.

files in his hands and mouth opened like he was about to say something but lost all ability to form proper words when he heard the exchange. you felt your hands tighten around the empty plastic wrapper.

morgan’s head turned towards you, then reid.

the tension was painfully obvious, he’d heard the last two sentences and that was already more than enough. a little too interested in the newbie to realise his friend was just being welcoming.

“i was just coming here to say we found a new body with another note displayed on the crime scene,” spencer spoke after what felt like ages. he still didn’t look at you.

“-but i guess you’ll do a great work without it, since you make such a great team.”

morgan whistled, attempting to ease the tension with yet another uneeded comment.

“woah, someone’s jealous.”

with a friendly pat on spencer’s very much tense arm, he left, leaving you and your male copycat in a very awkward situation.

suddenly, the conference room felt smaller.

the space, tight. tighter than the shirt sticking to your skin you suddenly felt trapped in. droplets of sweat clung to the back of your neck and you kept your chin down, eyes piercing through the documents laid out on the table.

he didn’t move, not until he cleared his throat and closed the door behind him. “i didn’t know your intention was to befriend the whole BAU," he snarked.

"i didn't know you had such a problem with me being in your life."

your sharpness made him flinch. daring words, toying with the feeling in his heart he was too much of a coward to properly name. nobody he'd ever met had acted this way towards him. with brutal honesty, confronting him with raw emotions he'd be tempted to conceal.

spencer's eyes were locked onto yours when you spoke. he looked vulnerable in this light, but the anger bubbling beneath his ribs didn't stop him from saying.

"i- that's not what i meant" he stuttered, looking both confused and indignated.

you'd pushed your chair out of the way to get up, almost reaching his height now. there was no escape from this conversation - and you'd very much rehearsed it in your mind anyway. now was time for the real deal.

"i think you did,"

of course, in your head, it wouldn't happen here, out of all places. feelings didn't match well with your work, and now in the conference room was far from the appropriate time.

"i think you're jealous" you affirmed with confidence, crosing your arms to prove your point, "jealous of the fact that i was assigned the task, and that derek had to supervise and not you."

gee, even hearing you call him by his first name made him boil.

"m’not jealous. i have three PhDs”

you laughed. indeed, even with academic degrees up his sleeves, he could still be very oblivious.

“not of the case, idiot.”

he knew what you meant.

and paused. swallowed again.

you bit your lip in waiting, almost facepalming yourself at the honesty of your words - you got that way when you were nervous. and you were really nervous now.

“i don’t think i’ve ever been jealous before.” he said, to himself more than you.

never had he encountered someone to be jealous of. he had the brains, the world seemed to like him. see something even he couldn’t sometimes. he was never jealous of the living because he spent most of his time in a world of his own.

and then he met you.

“there’s a first time for everything” you said with a reassuring smile, much softer now. time for trust, trusting someone and allowing them to see behind the illusion. for love, and letting someone in.

barely blinking, your mesmerising eyes are deeply focused on his now.

“i don’t think i liked it, though.”

“being jealous ?”

he nods, admitting. “you’re smart. and so good at what you do, i swear you made the room light up when you walked in.”

the distance between your bodies fades as he takes another step towards you. he nervously talks with his hands.

“and you could be a profiler !” he lets out, “i’ve never met anyone from another department who has enough talent to hypothetically join a higher rank and willingly refuses to even think about it.”

your lips part, a silent gasp.

“and it just hurts to see you here- here with everyone being so…”

the curious angle of your head makes him smile when you question. “so what ?”

“so perfect !”

it almost pains him to admit it. that the beauty you exude makes him ache, tugging at his sensitive heartstrings more often than he’d like to admit. when the elevator door close, or late at night while staring at his phone in hopes of engraving the pixels or your texts in his brain, he admires the closest to perfection the universe has ever created.

you.

"spencer," you let out in an amused giggle. "i'm not interested in your friends. or your job, for that matter."

he puffs some air into his cheeks, bashful. "i know. my brain just... likes to stop working when you're around, or something."

right, or something. with a playful nudge of the arm, you add.

"i am interested in you, though"

his eyes widen, pupils dilating. the little amount of oxygen left in the room is enough to make him slightly choke, which he covers by his hand. germ thing, sure.

"in me ?"

"yeah." someone has to say it, and you will if it means putting an end to the wrenching state of not knowing what you are. "-if you are, that is. unless i completely misunderstood the situation and you're actually jealous of my linguistics diploma-"

he calls your name, almost offended "i speak four languages !"

"i speak five. not that we're counting"

no bother mentionning you're also learning two. he's overwhelmingly close to you, and the smell of his cologne makes you melt little by little.

he utters quietly. "see ? perfect."

there's not exactly much he could do to make this conversation better. like, better than any debate you had over the phone, and yet he adds.

"i really am interested. and i'd like to see you sometimes... outside of work"

"and the elevator"

he laughs. a genuine sound you could get drunk on, and with a rush of adrenaline, reaches forwards to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear.

"just us. on a date. no work and no elevators involved, i promise"

jealousy looked good on him, earlier when he came in with clenched fists and a dark gaze. but nothing, no other expression could match the one he was wearing on his face. pools of hazel softened around the edges, spencer looked truly enamored.

and that ? that looked even better.

He squeezed his phone tightly, close to shattering it in his grip.

He was interrupted by the soft pattering of your clammy feet against the floor.

He shut his phone quickly. He was far too upset to talk about this. Instead, he leaned down, kissed you briefly, and muttered that he was going to be late.

“Hey! Don’t you start at nine?” you asked, confused and still half-asleep.

“Somethin’ at the agency. See ya later,” he said dryly…and that was it.

You stood there alone and disoriented, before texting him a few minutes later.

Bakugo’s mood was set for the rest of the day. He snapped at his assistant without meaning to and even flat-out refused an interview, something that only happened when he was on edge.

On the way home, he glanced at your text from that morning again.

He scoffed quietly and locked his phone, jaw tight.

It wasn’t anyone’s fault but his own that your relationship wasn’t public yet. He liked the privacy—no cameras, no opinions, no bullshit. But this… this was the downside. Watching people speculate. Watching him touch you like that while the world cheered.

By the time he got home, the apartment was dim and quiet. You were curled up on the couch, scrolling on your phone, hair still a little messy from a patrolling shift. You looked up when you heard the door.

“Hey,” you smiled. “You’re late.”

“Tch.” He kicked off his shoes harder than necessary and dropped his bag by the door. “Yeah.”

You watched him for a moment, sensing it immediately. The stiff shoulders. The way he wouldn’t look at you.

“…You okay?” you asked gently.

He shrugged. “I’m fine.”

A lie. A bad one.

You stood and crossed the room, stopping just short of touching him. “You’ve been weird all day and you didn’t answer my text.”

“That’s ‘cause I was busy,” he snapped, then immediately clicked his tongue. “—I’m sorry.”

Silence stretched between you.

You tilted your head. “Katsuki.”

He exhaled sharply through his nose, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t—” He stopped. His jaw clenched. “I don’t know how to say this shit without soundin’ like an idiot.”

You stepped closer this time, placing a hand on his arm. “I never think you’re an idiot. C’mon.”

He looked down at your hand resting on his arm, it grounded him.

“…I saw the news today,” he muttered.

Your expression softened. “Okay.”

He looked up at you, studying your face. You seemed completely unaware of the footage that had been taken.

“And those comments,” he continued, voice low and rough. “Everyone actin’ like you’re with Sero because of a dumbass mission. Like I don’t even exist.”

You opened your mouth to reassure him, but he spoke again, faster now, words tumbling out like he was afraid he’d lose the nerve.

“I know I’m the one who wanted to keep things quiet. I know that. But seein’ that crap—seein’ him touch you and people eat it up—” He cut himself off, fists clenched at his sides. “It pissed me off.”

You searched his face. “Are you… mad at me?”

“What? No!” he snapped instantly, then softened. “Never at you.” He took a breath.

“…I just—” His voice dropped. “I don’t like feelin’ like I gotta pretend you’re not mine.”

Your heart skipped a beat.

He finally met your eyes, red gaze intense and honest.

“I wanna go public,” he said, blunt but uncertain. “I want people to know you’re with me. That we’re together. I don’t care what that brings anymore.” And after a second he added, “If you’re okay with that.”

You stared at him for a second, then smiled slowly. “You’re sure?”

“Tch. I wouldn’t say it if I wasn’t.” He looked away, ears faintly red. “Just… didn’t know how to bring it up without soundin’ jealous or possessive.”

You laughed softly and wrapped your arms around him. “You do sound alittle jealous,” you teased. “But I like it.”

“Shut up,” he muttered, but his arms came around you anyway, pulling you close. “Only ‘cause I care.”

“Y’good?” He asked with a quirk of his brow. Y/n let out a long exhale, smoothing her sweaty hands down her jeans.

“Mhm.” Y/n hummed without looking up from her lap.

“Baby… are you nervous?” Drew asked lowly. Y/n swallowed harshly before slowly picking her head up to meet Drew’s eyes. She didn’t have to say a word, her nerves were already evident on her face.

Drew frowned, reaching across the console to take y/n’s slightly shaking hand. He lifted it up, pressing a long kiss to it before meeting y/n’s eyes again.

“You have nothing to be worried about, I promise.” Drew murmured lowly. “They’ve already met you—”

“But that was before—” Y/n cut in.

“And they already love you.” Drew finished, raising his eyebrows.

“But that—” Y/n began again.

“Y/n.” Drew said firmly. Y/n let out a small whine, her head falling back against the carseat as she tried to calm her worrying mind.

“You have nothing to worry about.” Drew whispered, gently running his thumb along the back of y/n’s hand. “I mean, if anyone has anything to worry about, it’s me.”

Y/n’s brows furrowed as she peered over at Drew. His face was a bit blank, the skin around just about all of his fingers gnawed off. She had been so focused on herself and all her nerves surrounding this meeting, she hadn’t even thought about the fact that Drew could be nervous.

“But Drew, they’re your family.” Y/n said with surprised scoff.

“Yeah, that’s why I’m nervous.” Drew chuckled lowly. “I don’t want them to scare you away.”

Y/n let out a little giggle despite herself. Even the slight lifting in her mood causing a small smile to spread across Drew’s face.

“Impossible, they gave me you. They can’t be too bad.” Y/n said, giving Drew’s hand a gentle squeeze back. Drew let out a long exhale, his eyes skimming over the woman in front of him. He was in complete awe of her— of just how her presence itself could act as a soothing relief to any sort of worries that could’ve made its way into his head.

“You always know just the right thing to say, y’know that, right?” Drew quirked a brow.

“I’m just perfect, I guess.” Y/n said with a completely deadpanned expression. Drew chuckled.

“See, nothing to worry about.” Drew said, reaching up to smooth his hand over the back of her head. “Just be your normal, perfect self and you’ll have nothing to worry about.”

“Just be your normal, perfect self and you’ll have nothing to worry about.” Y/n said back, quirking her brow. Drew let out a long sigh, internally mulling it over, before giving y/n a terse nod.

“Ok, well…” Drew turned to face the front door, noticing the multiple pairs of eyes peeking out at them through the nearby window, “we should probably head in before my siblings come out here and drag us inside.”

Y/n let out a low, still certainly nervous, laugh before opening the door to Drew’s car. Drew followed suit, the two of them rounding the car to open the trunk. Drew pulled both of their suitcases out. Y/n took hers as Drew piled as many gift wrapped boxes and bags on his arm as he could— only allowing y/n to carry one of the smaller gifts they’d bought for Drew’s sister, which she did with only one dramatic eyeroll.

The two of them made their way up to the front door, y/n taking extra care with each and every step towards the door and each and every breath that filled her lungs. Before Drew could even raise his fist to knock on the door, it was thrown open… and chaos ensued.

“Y/N!” Drew’s sisters shouted in unison before quickly converging on y/n, practically tackling her over on the porch. She had spent plenty of time with Drew’s siblings, somehow perfectly falling in with their sibling camaraderie before her and Drew’s relationship had even begun.

“Oh my—” Drew stammered, the boxes in his arms wobbling as his brother Dylan ruffled his hair before joining his sisters in squishing y/n in a giant hug. Y/n let out a giggle as the three of them eventually let go of her, wide smiles on their faces.

“We are so, sooo happy you guys are finally together.” Drew’s sister, Mack, squealed. His other siblings nodded enthusiastically. It was no secret the Starkeys, the Y/ln, and practically everyone else on the planet had been not-so-quietly rooting for the two of them to get together since the moment they met.

“I swear we were telling Drew he better hurry up and ask you out before—” Brooke began.

“Y/n, sweetheart!” Drew’s mom swooned, coming up to give y/n a hug. Drew furrowed his brows, watching his entire family bypass him for his girlfriend.

“Hello Mrs Starkey.” Y/n smiled politely.

“Oh, nonsense, call me Jill.” Drew’s mom says quickly, pulling away to smile at y/n brightly. “We are so happy you’re here, sweetheart. We’ve been trying to tell Drew he needed to ask you out for—”

“Oh my gosh, guys!” Drew suddenly snapped, causing everyone's attention to (reluctantly) shift from y/n to Drew’s flushed expression. Y/n turned to him with a quirk of her brow.

“You’re gonna suffocate her.” Drew said with an exasperated chuckle.

“Shush, you’re just jealous.” Brooke said, waving her brother off before turning back to y/n.

“No, I’m just worried you’re gonna scare my girlfriend off—” Drew began.

“Oh my gosh, he said ‘girlfriend’!” Drew’s mom swooned, causing y/n to let out a giggle and Drew to dramatically roll his eyes before looking at y/n.

“This is exactly what I was worried about.” Drew said with a huff.

“What? That we like your awesome girlfriend too much?” Mack asked with a quirk of her brow.

“Well— I’m just— you guys are being a lot and I don’t want you to scare her away.” Drew grumbled, giving his family as stern of a look as he could muster.

“Aww, it’s ok.” Y/n said with a dramatic hum. She crossed the front porch they were still standing on to give Drew a hug. His tense shoulders immediately loosened as she perched up onto her tiptoes to wrap her arms around him. She eventually went back down onto her feet, keeping an arm slung around Drew as she turned to look at his family.

“I love your family and they’re definitely not gonna scare me away.” Y/n said, a wide smile spreading across her face as she turned from Drew’s family to Drew. His face had gone softer as he swallowed harshly before a similar smile spread across his own face. He nodded, looking over at his family as they watched the two of them with total adoration. Drew almost swore he could see tears brimming in his mother’s eyes.

“We’re not just Drew’s family anymore, sweetheart, we’re yours too.” Drew’s mom said with a slight sniffle. Y/n immediately folded, pulling Drew’s mom into a big hug. Without a word, Drew’s siblings joined in. Drew stood there with the same gentle smile on his face, admiring how y/n loved his family just as much as he did… and they loved her (almost) as much as he loved her.

It couldn't be the movies or dinner or shopping. Those were too overdone. You'd told her you'd plan it and she was trusting you to plan it. You needed to do something extraordinary. Something that would blow her away and show her that you were hers, that you wanted this more than you wanted to pass Aizawa's class. 

But it couldn't be too outright either. It had to be careful and roundabout, so she came to that conclusion herself, and it didn't seem like you were holding yourself back from dropping to your knees for her. 

The beach was a solid contender for at least a day. The idea of spending a few hours with her, lounging in the sand and playing in the water was all too enticing. Until you took a step back and realized you might come off as a pervert just wanting to see her in a bikini or a jackass with the “take her swimming on the first date” mentality, so that idea was quickly discarded. 

Another idea you had was a picnic. Adorable sundress, cliche red and white checkered blanket, basket overflowing with fruits and cheeses and sparkling drinks. But Mina didn't really like bugs and there wasn't much you could do about the possibility of nature interfering. So that one was out too. 

It all seemed like a trap. Every option had something wrong with it. There were too many bugs this time of year for hiking. The aquarium was so expensive, especially if you were to get her something from the gift shop or a snack. And there was no way you were bringing your own food, that would make you look cheap. A dance class would be nice, but Mina already knows so many dances it might be redundant for her and she probably won't enjoy it. 

Eventually, you settled on a pottery class. And it wasn't just because you were hoping Mina might need help on the wheel so you could sit behind her and guide her hands. 

You genuinely liked the idea of creating something with her, the intimacy of starting something together and seeing it through to the end. It was like having a baby, except it was clay and you were both women and teenagers, but other than that, same thing, right? 

Mina on the other hand, was stressed because she was worried she wasn't going to have the right outfit for whatever you proposed. You hadn't told her what the date was because you wanted it to be a surprise, so up until Wednesday, she was panicked. She ended up putting together 17 different outfit combinations, hanging them up around her room, one for each possible date outcome she could think of. 

When you finally texted that it was casual and lowkey and a bit messy, she decided she could put away almost all of her chosen outfits. Away went the bikini, the matching set, the leopard print mini skirt, the cropped Juicy zip up, the Prada belt, the white Adidas- all too loved and expensive to worry about your promise of ‘messy’, whatever that implied. 

You knock on Mina's door on Thursday, precisely at the time you told her in your text. She was already waiting on the other side and had been standing there for about 5 minutes now just in case you came early, but she waited a few moments before opening the door, acting casual as if she was just finishing up getting ready. One hand rests in her hair, giving it a bit of extra fluffing. She says your name with an excited tone that makes your heart race. 

“Hi, Mina. Sorry, do you still need time?” You ask nervously. “No, this is perfect, I'm all ready,” she promises. She grabs her purse and joins you in the hall, locking her dorm room before turning back to you. “So… What are we doing?” She asks, trying to sound casual as she attempts to scope out what you had planned so she might be able to change if her outfit was unfit for the activity. 

You, unknowing of her worry of being unprepared and already in love with her outfit, simply told her, “It's a surprise.” She tries to smile, the worry still creeping at the back of her skull. Mina doesn't want to ask you outright, but she realizes she might have to. 

“Am I dressed okay for whatever you have planned?” Your eyes flick over her again, as if you already didn't have her entire outfit memorized in your mind and you nod. “It's perfect! Casual and laid back. I love your pants.” “Thank you, they're Garage,” she gushes, tugging at her camo cargos. You smile, not recognizing the brand, but enjoying how she seemed to like your compliment. 

“Well, are you all ready to go?” You ask, playfully offering your arm. She takes it gently, resting her freshly painted nails on your upper arm as she follows you down the hall. 

The common room was mostly empty. It was too nice of a day out to be cooped up inside. The first nice day in a while too. No one wanted to waste this good weather. Which also meant, keeping your date on the DL. 

You and Mina agreed that you weren't necessarily going to hide your relationship- whatever it might blossom into- but you wouldn't exactly tell everyone about it either. If they figured it out, good for them. If they didn't, then they probably didn't need to know in the first place. 

Jiro figured it out because she knew you. And she knew that you knew she swung certain ways herself. So why would you come to her for dating advice if it wasn't about a woman? And deducing that it was with Mina was just as easy. 

But other than Kyoka, no one else was aware of this new development. Or at least you hoped that's how it was. You made your classmate pinky swear to secrecy and she was always good about keeping things quiet, especially when they weren't her business. 

The streets were full, busy with the life that reappears with warmer weather. An ice cream shop had a line out the door, flower stands were on every street corner that wasn't occupied by a musician or some sort of food kiosk. 

As you passed a large group of middle schoolers, still in uniform, Mina grabbed your hand to keep from being separated. An unexpected plus in your opinion. Your giddiness almost spills over, but you manage to restrain it to a smile. Desperation was unbecoming, but Mina wouldn't have noticed. Her heart was racing too fast. 

As you come up on the pottery studio, you pull her closer to the storefront side of the sidewalk as opposed to the street side. She notices your slowing in pace and realizes that it must be one of these stores. Flower shop? Movie theater? Ramen shop? …Pottery Studio? Yeah, it must be that one.

The interior is everything an art studio should be. It's welcoming, it's warm, it's colorful and bright and full of people who look like they could be on the cover of Zara or Vogue. You talk to the instructor at the desk, letting her know about your appointment you set up and that you don't need any teaching assistance. You had taken a ceramics class before over a summer for a bit of fun and still remembered the basics of vessel throwing.

Of course you'd be teaching Mina to throw. Being on the wheel with someone, your hands on their hands, your chest to their back, your chin on their shoulder, it was practically as intimate as foreplay.

You lead Mina back to the throwing room. They had seven wheels, six of which were already in use. Most of the other ceramicists seem to know each other, talking and joking and flicking slip water at one another. The other two had headphones on and seemed to be in their own worlds entirely. One was bringing up the walls of a vase that was already taller than your torso.

"Oh, there's... there's only one left here," Mina says softly. "You can throw on the wheel, I'll just watch." "What? No, I-I wanted you to learn- I wanted to teach you," you say quickly. "Do-do you want to learn?" "I'd love to, um... Should I... take off my nails?" She shows you her new acrylics.

You knew she had only gotten them last week. They were baby pink and complete works of art. One was fully cheetah print, another cheetah print French tip, one had a flower charm, one had a bit of gold. The middle finger and ring finger were shorter though. She had told you that they were a new trend- vampire nails or something. You were pretty sure she designed them herself. It would be entirely cruel and criminal to make her break them all off.

"No, no, no, don't take them off, we can get you some gloves or something," you tell her, taking her hand. "You need nail guards?" One of the girls calls over, popping her gum. She points across the room to a hand washing sink. On the clay-caked sink, there's a box of blue nitrile gloves. "Oh, thank you!"

Mina gets a pair from the box then returns, snapping the gloves against her wrists. "Alright, let's get started."

This was exactly what you wanted. To be holding Mina as she worked. To have your arms around her waist, your hands on hers, guiding her hands. Why was this so scary? You were creating something together. It wasn't just art, it was like... life.

Clay came from the ground, from the dirt, from the Earth. It was Mother Nature herself in your hands being molded into something just as beautiful as she was in the hands of a young woman possibly even more beautiful. It was Gaia, it was Terra, it was Jörd, Danu, Bhumi. Seams of natural material were called veins for a reason. It was the lifeblood of the Earth, things like this.

That might be why it was so scary. Because you kept romanticizing the creation process of a vessel of clay. Acting like you were making a baby. Fuck, don't think about that. Don't think about getting pegged- goddammit, why did you have to think those words. Thank God you didn't have a dick or you'd be in such deep shit right about now.

"Hey, this isn't actually half bad," Mina says softly. "Yeah, you're doing wonderfully," you whisper. "I can't wait to take this home." "Well, it's going to need some time to try out. And..." "And what?" She lets her foot off the pedal slightly, turning her head. Her nose brushes your cheek. Out of the corner of your eye Mina's gaze is intense. It's soft. Nerve-wracking. "And, um... we're gonna have to come back to glaze it," you tell her softly.

"Glaze?" She breathes. "That's like... paint, right?" "Yeah, just like paint, but for the clay." "How's it any different?" "Um... ingredients. Chemical makeup. It's designed to withstand the high heats of the kiln." "Kiln?" "Yeah, it's a... a giant oven basically and it gets to like... four thousand degrees or something." "Four thousand?"

You pause. A smile begins to form. Is she...?. You finally turn to look at her, your expression giddy and suspicious. "Are you... using the Solid Snake conversation method?" "Fuck," she hisses under her breath. "Yes, I am. How'd you know?" "How'd I know?" You echo, laughing. "Right, stupid question," Mina giggles. "I think it's cute, but... I never heard you ever use it before."

Shit is that too straightforward? Might as well just tell her you pay close attention to her mannerisms and speaking patterns.

"No, I, uh, usually don't, but I read online that it helps with speaking when you're nervous." "Nervous?" "Yeah, nervous. Anxious. Flustered. Like on a date. I was worried I'd might get nervous and tongue-tied, so I kept it in my back pocket." "Tongue-tied?" "Like-..." She trails off, a grin forming on her own face. "You sick bitch, you had me going there!" You laugh, releasing her hands to keep yourself from falling. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I just had to try it out after you tried it on me."

"Well, you're much better at it than I am." "It's only because you're 'flustered' as you said... Do I fluster you, Mina?" She takes a moment to pretend to think about it, then nods. "Yeah, you do. Your cute and funny and smart and I... I really like you. Yeah, you fluster me." "Well, I'll be," you murumur.

...

What the fuck did you just say? 'Well I'll be', what are you, a gold prospector!?

"Oh, my God," you groan. You almost rub your eyes, hide in your hands, but theres clay streaked up to your elbows and you don't have the time for a double eye infection. "Oh, my God!" Mina squeals. "What the fuck was that!?" "I don't know!" "Oh, my God, what are you Stinky Pete from Toy Story!?" "Mina!" Her cackles catch the attention of the nearby group, who, upon sensing the good vibes, begin laughing as well.

"You are so stinking cute. That was hilarious!" Her raucous laughter dims to a giggle as she calms back down. "You're like Luz from the Owl House. How she said 'Crikey' after kissing the girl of her dreams." "God, don't give my subconscious any ideas," you groan playfully. "Last thing I need is for you to have two pieces of dirt on me."

Psssssssttttttttt...BOOM! (that was a firework sound effect in writing 🎇🎆, you're welcome)

Mina wasn't an idiot. She was far from it. Even if her Literature scores weren't the highest in the class, she could still read people better than anyone. She could pick apart statements and vocal tones and subtle meanings better than most BookTok girlies and female friend groups that didn't trust men. She knew exactly what you meant, what your subconscious wanted her to know.

She, Mina Ashido, was the girl of your dreams. You knew she knew it. She knew you knew she knew it. The people across the room knew you knew she knew you knew she knew it.

(Lord Almighty, was that a stroke?)

Gaping like a fish plucked from a riverbed, you stared at her. Your mouth opened and closed a few times, moving to form the beginnings of words that never seemed to find their endings. It was humiliating to be so stumped.

But Mina didn't look mad. No, she looked happy. Delighted. Tickled pink. "I'm the girl of your dreams," she giggles. "You are," you finally manage to whisper. "Good. You're mine..." The way your name falls from her lips is like Heaven. How does she manage to do that? To steal your breath and replace it with library's worth of words that you couldn't even begin to hope to express.

You hated her for it. No, you didn't. You loved her more than anything for it. For that little quirk and everything else she did. "So... you'd want to... come back with me then?" "When?" She murmurs, her already dark eyes becoming just a little darker.

Was this flirting? Were those bedroom eyes? What is going on?

"When the vase is dried out... so we can glaze it?" She pretends to think about it. Her playful smile was worth every star in the sky. "Yeah, I think I do." "You think you do?" "I think I do. I wanna come back with you. To glaze our vase." "Sounds good then," you breathe. "Yeah, I agree... Sounds really good."

Is she getting closer? Oh...

...

Yeah, she was.

Not when you're changing near her in the locker room and she has to force herself not to look at your chest in the short time between you taking off your towel and putting on your bra.

Not when you're giggling with Kyoka about something silly and your eyes are sparkling with delight and mirth as she keeps adding onto the joke. She doesn't even get jealous that Jiro can make you laugh so hard.

Because she just doesn't swing that way. Mina likes boys. She likes seeing the boys in her class shirtless or working out. She likes talking with her girl classmates about their crushes and sharing her own, despite the fact that they were all fictional. She likes watching Magic Mike with Ochaco, giggling and not mentioning when the other squirms at Channing Tatum's Pony dance. Normal girl things. That normal girls do.

Because Mina Ashido is a normal girl. Who is not in love with her best friend.

Mina notices your soft groaning from across the baths as you stretch. A pained expression flashes across your face and she perks up, internally wanting to fix whatever ailed you.

Quickly, she comes over, moving in front of you to meet your gaze. "Hey, what's wrong?" She asks, tilting her head curiously. "Hm? Oh, I'm just a little sore," you tell her, bringing out that bright smile.

It takes a lot of her restraint to hold in a sigh and an "I told you so". Earlier in the day, she had recommended going a little easier on yourself during training, knowing that you'd be sore, but did you listen? Of course not. Not with your desperate need to prove a point and the challenge you made with Denki earlier.

Stupid Denki, pushing you to your limits like this, not realizing that you couldn't handle it. Mina had realized. And despite her annoyance with her idiot friend, she also realized the opportunity she had to help you.

"Do you want me to massage your back?" She offers, a smile lighting her face. "Oh, would you mind?" Your tone was cautious, not wanting to overstep, but she senses a hint of excitement at the idea of a massage.

Mina quickly moves behind you, already reaching for your shoulders. "Don't be silly, of course I don't mind!" She laughs, beginning her gentle rubbing on your back and shoulders.

A soft sound of relief leaves you immediately and Mina has to bite back one of her own. She isn't sure why, but she knows that she almost echoed your soft, delighted noise.

Not on purpose! It was unconscious. Some echolalia or something. One of those things Denki was talking about being a side effect of his ADHD. Maybe she had ADHD too. Or at least the sound-repeating thing. That had to be it. It didn't make sense for it to be anything else.

Because hearing you almost-moan wouldn't make her do the same thing. That would be silly. That would imply she was affected by your sounds. Which she wasn't!

Gently, she rubs knots out of your back, her thumbs moving in tight, nearly overlapping circles to force your muscles into submission.

Soft gasps and whines leave your lips, which you assume are too quiet for her to hear due to her lack of reaction, but unbeknownst to you, Mina was listening for them and caught every single one. Each sound made her just a little bit more tense, but she didn't acknowledge them, not wanting to embarrass you.

Her cheeks are warm, but Mina, ever the genius, blames it on the water that she knew she had been stewing in for too long. It was too hot and she was finally beginning to feel the effects that her elders told her would ruin her health or whatever.

She slowly moves her hands a little further down your back, listening for those stifled gasps that told her you enjoyed this. Her knuckles dig into the dimples above your ass and her thumbs gently press down at the top of your cheeks, making a firm circle with the pads of her fingers.

Your gasp alarms Mina and her hands jump to the safety of your shoulders.

One second... Two seconds... Four. Ten...

Silence stretches, weighing in the air almost heavier than the damp heat of the bath. Panic and confusion sticks in Mina's throat like her favorite caramel candies that she swallows too fast. She tries to swallow these feelings, but they remain stubborn in her esophagus.

After about a minute of silence, she finally rubs one more circle, assuming that your lack of response meant you probably weren't upset or disgusted with her lack of self control.

Another shaky sigh leaves you, the first audible sound to fall from your lips since... 67 seconds ago. "Hey, um... I'm sorry," she whispers, her voice so soft, you wouldn't have heard it if you weren't hyperaware of every aspect of her presence. "Don't worry about it," you breathe, glancing over your shoulder.

As soon as you looked, you wished you hadn't. Because seeing her the way she was only made it so much harder to ignore the atmosphere, drenched with tension and anticipation.

Her eyes were dark, and not just because of her alien-like black scleras, they held a deep warmth, that dilated her pupils as she met your gaze.

Her pink skin was flushed a rosy-er color than usual, almost as if... a blush? Something you hardly ever see on Mina, who was usually so confident, never embarrassed by her actions.

And her lips. Trembling and bitten plump, parted just so, revealing her perfect pearly teeth and her tongue pressing against them.

Oh God. You shouldn't have looked back.

"Mina?" You whisper. She just looks at you, taking in your expression that mirrored her own- a heat that darkened your eyes, a blush warming your face, lips worried round by your teeth.

Finally she breathes your name, a pleading sound that makes your head spin with want and an inherent wrongness in response to feeling that want for your best friend.

Unbeknownst to you, Mina felt it too. The wrongness, that is. Something inside of her was making itself known- the biggest bottle of repressed emotions was beginning to crack.

No. No, not now. Not like this. Why like this?

She realized what this feeling was with too much familiarity for someone who didn't like girls. Despite the recognition, she felt an undeniable loathing for the feeling.

Without another word, Mina was out of the bath, streaking to the changing room in a flash of pink. You watch her go, an ache settling in your chest.

The next day, Mina doesn't greet you with her usual enthusiasm.

Nor the next day.

Nor the day after that.

A week goes by. Every day she interacts with you from an arms length. She's scared to overstep. And her fear is becoming unbearable, for the both of you.

But what would you even confront her on? Avoiding you because she acted weird in the baths? She might just be embarrassed and you couldn't be mad that she was embarrassed, that was rude.

So a confrontation wouldn't work. You needed a different label for it.

A 'catch up chat'! Since its been a week since you both got to gab and gossip. You even made a Canva poster for it, sending her the image through your text thread. Her simple "👍" reply was all you needed. It was Go Time.

You'd have to go about this gently. Yimmer and yammer and yap with her for a little while and then carefully maneuver the conversation in the direction you wanted.

"Subtle" wasn't in your Instagram handle for nothing!

On the day that you scheduled, you wait excitedly for her to arrive. Her dorm room was on the floor above yours, and you'd think it'd be a quick jaunt down the steps, but Mina didn't take the steps when she wore her favorite leopard print track suit.

And you knew she was wearing it because she posted about it on her story.

Not that you were paying attention or waiting for her to post or anything.

"Got any room in there for another gossipy hoe?" Mina calls, rapping her knuckles on your bedroom door. You swing the door open, squealing and wrapping her in a hug.

"Of course I do! Come on in, pretty. We totally need a debrief. It has been too long!"

She sits at your desk, absently painting her nails while you sit on the bed and braid the tassels of your winter blanket. "...So, uh... What's new?"

"And he actually admitted, out loud, in person, that it was his fault. Like, he's the reason that rule was instated. And up until ten seconds ago, I was the only one who knew that," she giggles, kicking her feet excitedly.

At some point of the yap session, she moved to your bed and you moved to the desk. She laid on her stomach, her chest smooshed on her forearms and her feet kicking in the air.

You glanced at her occasionally, trying not to stare as you smile and sketch.

"Oh, my God, are you even listening?" She scoffs, calling your name. "What's even so interesting about that paper anyway?"

You give the drawing a few finishing touches, then reach across the room to hand it to her. She takes the paper, and her complaints quickly die on her tongue, silenced by her quiet shock.

"...That's me," she whispers after a beat of silence. It was her. You had drawn her pose, lazily stretched out on your bed.

A few details were foregone, such as the rhinestones and leopard print on her track suit, but most everything was there, and accurate too.

"Oh, my God," she whispers, letting herself take it in. Her eyes catch on the drawn Mina's lower back- her shirt was lifted in the back, her track pants lowered to reveal two dimples in her skin.

All at once, Mina is brought back to the baths a week ago. Were you fucking with her? Was this to make some kind of point?

She eyes you warily. "What's this for?" "For you," you tell her, smiling sweetly. Mina considers this, her eyes narrowing slightly. "...For me?" "Yeah. You can- keep it if you want. Or- don't worry about it, if you don't," you say awkwardly. "Why did you draw me?"

"Well, you're... right there and... kinda beautiful and like, the perfect muse, so I just-... I-I know, I'm sorry, I should've asked first," you say hurriedly, expecting the worst.

Her eyes widen at your quick and casual admission of her beauty. "No, I'm not mad! I just don't... you think I'm beautiful?" "Of course I do! Are you crazy!?" She just stares at you, shocked.

"I can't tell if you're fucking with me." "I'm not fucking with you! I mean, I will, if you want me to-..." "What?" "Nothing!" "Are you flirting with me now!?" "Maybe!... Do you want me to be!?" "Maybe!" "Then I am!"

Mina looks at you, blushing a cute pink, her lips pursed. "...You're flirting with me?" She whispers. "...If you want me to," you tell her softly. She turns her face away, gritting her teeth.

This was exactly what she didn't want to happen tonight. She told herself no lesbian shit. But wait... Why is it so bad if she likes you if... you like her back?

Slowly, her eyes meet yours again, holding an emotion you hadn't expected to see: hope. It was a quiet hopefulness, slightly dimmed with the worry that this was all a trick. You didn't know what she was worried about exactly, but you saw her concern and decided to fix that right away.

You stand, going over to your bed. "Mina," you whisper. "I want to flirt with you... on purpose. Not just as friends, like... I want to take you out o-on a date, a real one, and hold your hand and hold doors open for you and buy you whatever you want... Will you... let me take you out?" Her eyes widen and she almost gasps. "Really?" She whispers. "You wanna...? With me?"

You nod quickly, eyes also wide with a worry that she'd say no. "Yes. Please."

Mina scrambles to sit up on the bed, throwing her arms around your neck. "Fuck you!" She chokes, crying softly. For a moment, you aren't sure how to respond, confused and stunned.

"...I'm free this Thursday," she mumbles into your neck. You exhale a breath of relief, eyes closing as you finally allow yourself to hug her back. "I'll pick you up at 5 then?" You ask her softly, keeping your hands respectful. She nods, pulling away and wiping her eyes.

"I need to go," she whispers. Your heart drops, that previous worry working its way into your chest once again. "What? Why?" "I need to find an outfit," she tells you shyly.

"...It's only Monday." Mina sighs, blushing again. "I know, but... I want to be perfect." "You already are, but... whatever makes you happy." You gently touch her cheek, smiling softly. She scowls playfully. "Whatever... I'll text you tonight then?"

"Sounds perfect," you tell her, stepping back to give her space. She steps back as well, grabbing her purse and reaching for the door handle. Her hand misses the handle a few times because she refuses to break eye contact with you, but she eventually gets it and quickly rushes out.

You can hear her squeal as she rushes down the hall. That was probably the first and last time she ever ran in that track suit.
