The Anti-Fear Society
Positive thinking does not cause miraculous opportunity, but in a world where we feel out of control, it can provide the incentive to effect slow, constant change in our communities. Fighting fear means doing real work to help other people. Being a member of the anti-fear society means actively contributing to the wellbeing of your neighbor, whether that be through purposeful acts of kindness, donations of money, goods, and time, or advocating for those unable to speak openly in the public sphere.
I think we need to appreciate this part of Brennan Lee Mulligan's WIRED interview a lot more:
"The evangelical right in this country needs to manufacture outrage to hold onto its voting block. [The satanic panic about DnD] was arbitrary, as the targets of their outrage always are. Fight the power."
PLEASE Write Your Book!
I'm serious. Please write it. If you need a sign to start, continue, or whatever is inbetween, this is it. Go do it.
I spent the past couple weeks indulging myself in some BookTok recommendations. While some were indeed good (Kings of Sin, my beloved), some were just...I don't need to finish my sentence there.
I DNF'd some books for the first time since I read Lord of the Flies (sorry Golding, you put me to sleep with your descriptions) and I powered through others in hopes that they would eventually get better. The general consensus I ended up getting was that I could not understand for the fucking life of me how these books got published. The writing in some of them was no better than that of a 2010s teen writing Maximum Ride fic on Wattpad for the first time, with the characterization abysmal enough to match.
I don't want to knock any specific author or book here, because I will concede one thing: they finished their books. They got them published. They're successful. For that, I commend them, because I'm still on my way there myself and I can't take that away from them. Jolly good show.
But that brings me to my point: if they can do it, YOU absolutely can do it too.
If some of these Amazon and NYT bestsellers can have prose on a Wattpad level with characters that have enough poorly-written cognitive dissonance to make Deadpool or Walter White jealous, your fleshed out, deeply intuitive, and remarkably creative epic can sit right alongside them no problem. Whether you're writing the next GoT or a romantic slice-of-life, there is a not a goddamn thing on this planet stopping you from rolling up with the big dogs.
If these guys can do it, so can you.
So, stop telling yourself you can't. Stop letting other people tell you you can't. Stop comparing yourself to these authors who, respectfully and bluntly, can't write for shit (or at least need to fire their fucking editors, good lord).
WRITE YOUR DAMN BOOK. PLEASE. WE NEED IT.
(If you like my guides, prompts, writing, or art, consider supporting the blog today! All donations help me keep this thing up and running and all are appreciated <3)
been horribly depressed lately so here's some word vomit in the hopes that maybe i can get my ass going and write shit again

also the absolute best thing about having this tumblr account is that NO ONE IS LISTENING. the ultimate privacy. thank christ my parents have no idea how this part of the internet works
what studying literature feels like
my mom is one of those people who emotionally dumps on her kids (classic) and then goes, "how come my kids don't want to talk to me?"
and all I ever want to do when she complains to me that my siblings don't talk to her is go WHY TF DO YOU THINK but with the spongebob pose
anyway if there's some way to do that nicely, let me know lmao
has anyone else read "Six Thousand Years of Bread: Its Holy and Unholy History" by H. E. Jacob? It's fascinating and I don't know how I haven't found it sooner

one of the things that's been difficult for me as a first-time mom is figuring out what i actually do like to do in my free time. i don't get real free time anymore. there's always a time limit. but in quiet moments i don't even really know what i like. everything, every thought passes through a filter of "but could i be doing something more productive? could i be doing something more for my child?". and doing things for myself, being a whole person, being mentally healthy, those things are good for my kid, but it's so not-concrete that it's hard to justify playing a video game while he naps or even showering after he goes to bed because what if, what if, what if
it's weird. it's a strange. i still don't know how to reconcile the memories of past me with my current self. and lots of moms talk about this disconnect but it's still weird to really experience it for the first time. i'm not mad about it, or even sad, but i don't really know what to do with this.
anywho
god i wish there was a single bookstore in my stupid town
i am exhausted

virginia woolf's 1931 new years resolutions : "to have none. not to be tied. to be free & kindly with myself. sometimes to read, sometimes not to read. to go out, yesβbut stay at home in spite of being asked. as for clothes, i think to buy good ones."
