This is very special to me. As I remember it I was just getting into playing guitar (around 14 or so) and an old friend of my dad name Mick Hubbard, (who was a guitarist himself and had played in a band with my dad when they were younger) made me a mixtape (an actual cassette! - showing my age) of all the guitarists I should check out. Along with it he wrote these very detailed notes to accompany the tape. Rather embarrassed to say I didn’t give it much time back then. It’s now looking back at it and seeing all the players he listed (Les Paul, Django Reinhardt, Joe Pass,Robert Johnson, Freddy King, Eric Clapton, Larry Carlton, Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck…the list goes on) that I understand why he wanted to introduce me to these players. I now know their importance and significance and am all the more touched that Mick did this for me. I don’t know where Mick is now. Last I knew he was in the Leicester area in the UK. I would really love for him to know that I still have this and that I’ve ended up making a career of guitar playing and sharing my passion with others, like he did with me. Was discussing major scale shapes with a student today. This is important. See how the one octave major scale pattern (rooted on string 6 in the first fretboard) is warped as it moves across the string sets. This is caused by the tuning difference between strings 3 and 2. You want to get these shapes under your fingers, and study the Intervals too. The good people at @guitarlayers kindly let me test drive their amazing software. Guitar Layers can do so much that I feel I’ve barely scratched the surface of it capabilities. It’s perfect for working on arpeggio, pentatonic and other common and exotic scale patterns. I’ve been particularly interested in its chord functionality. In this little example I explored some new ways to play an Amaj9 chord. The chord tones can be manually entered you are able to modify string sets and the fret range for each chord. Setting to a 12 fret area gives some great open string voicings. I played along to my screen recording here to give you an idea of what these chords sound like.
