May it be love or passion, I don't wanna lose my cool Because I've already reached for loneliness. Now, shut up and move, Breakdown! Then, Break out from the night of momentum! I understand it already; Loneliness is something you aim for yourself. Now, I'll bet everything on it; I've decided I'll keep looking forward. Who's my enemy? My enemy is the dread of my strong self
squeaky shoes, sweaty foreheads. just being inside that building made him nervous. his body would still have to work through a lot to get used to this day-to-day life.Â
dance practice was what got him excited. itâs what had gotten him into the company, after all. his seniors are better than him, but at least some of his new fellows arenât. it makes him confident in his own skills which he had worked so hard to find. anything to hold onto. hoon gives his coach a smile once it ends.
it doesnât last too long. he stands next to two other trainees. when it comes to singing, his seniors are better than him, and so are the other new trainees. itâs only his first week but it already feels like heâs lagging behind everyone else. he canât hit a single note. a hand rubs against his throat. âc-can i try it again?â and the coach nods, but his face shows heâs not expecting much.Â
âare you going for a dancer role?â the man asks. hoon looks around, but all the other kids had already started gathering their belongings. âyes.â he replies. âsome idols these days just debut because they look pretty, you know? youâve really struggled through your first week. most kids quit before their first year is done.â the coach presses his lips together and shakes his head. âyou just canât sing, and i donât think you can even pretend that you can. you canât become an idol like that, kid.â
the coach walks away, and hoon moves towards his bag. class is over.
most kids quit before their first year. he isnât sure how true that is, but a year later it rings differently inside his ears. there he was. as it so happens, another six months passed since the last batch of new trainees. they greet him and call him a senior. a year difference must be a lot of experience.
shoes still squeak, foreheads still sweat. heâs better than the new kids. heâs surpassed some of his seniors. at the end of the class, hoon smiles and thanks his coach before leaving. a year later, and a bit of experience is what he got. bettering his skill for a dancer, he thinks. with a shake of his head, the boy moves on to where heâs supposed to go next.
standing in front of the other trainees, heâs asked to sing. he doesnât recognize the new coach, so he nods. heâs not a singer. sheâd see that, too. âwhy donât you try a different song?â she says. âone you like, maybe.â his eyes shift to the other people in the room before landing on her again.Â
âare you a dancer?â his stomach twirls. he wouldnât be good at even pretending to be something else. âyes.â she nods and looks down at what she has written down. âthatâs what it says hereâfrom your old coachâbut iâm surprised. you have a good voice. itâs just untrained.â hoon stands still. heâs also untrained to react to such a situation. âreally?â
she chuckles. âof course. sit back down. why wonât the next one go up?â he sits on his spot next to the others and rubs a hand against his throat.Â

alex had honestly lost track of how many personal little notes he had written at this point. he had spent the past couple days working on this task and he was surprised that his hand hadnât fallen off yet from all the writing. he tosses the pen across the room, watching as it goes into the trash can and smiles proudly at the shot. âsweet!â he turns to look at hoon, eyebrow raised. âhm? oh yeah, just little things that will maybe make them happy or even just words of encouragement.â
he lets out a soft sigh as he leans back in the chair, stretching his arms above his head and letting out a small yawn. âwhat about you?â he asks this as he sits straight once again, leaning over to take a look at what the other is doing. âiâm sure the fans will enjoy the snacks and the notes actually. from what iâve experienced so far, you could do aegyo and they would swoon.â he canât help but internally cringe at the thought but also laugh a bit at the idea of it all. âoh, have you decided on which events youâll be taking part in?â
âmhm! me too.â he adds a small drawing of a smiling face to the end of his message then sets the pen down on the table. while he couldnât do any complex origamis, at least hoon knew how to fold a letter dutely. âwell, i sure hope they do! these are the usual things i have for a snack. if they donât like it that might be a little awkward.â the boy chuckles before doing the first fold.
while his fingers do quick word of the letter, he pays attention to the otherâs question. âif iâm sure of anything itâs basketball. i really like playing it. other than that, iâm up for filling any spots. i enjoy any sport, really. except zoning out, if that counts as one,â he chuckles. âi think i would be the first to laugh.â with the final fold, he puts the letter inside the plastic bag, then reaches out for his pile of snacks. hoon opens the first one he grabs and takes a candy out to put in his gift. âwhat about you? do you like any sport in particular?â
it isnât that odd to think the company would like to use their trainees to fill in numbers. theyâd do it with backup dancers for stages, or background characters in videos. being a backup somewhere else shouldnât be that different. with many roles to be filled, hoon wouldnât mind being just one more dancer in the many. after all, the boy wouldnât consider himself much of an actor, but still most certainly a fan of musicals.
the idea itself of being in a musical left him thrilled. the lack of options on what he could perform for his audition wasnât quite as thrilling. hoon could think of a multitude of songs from different musicals heâd like to use, but instead, they were all limited to songs performed in âdream highâ, which werenât that many. on the other hand, at least it wasnât a selection of solely poor options.
a classic was amongst them. ârainismâ came out when he was only seven, but pretending not to know it would be a sin. he didnât actually know the entire choreography that went along with it beforehand (mostly just the bad boy part), but it was a pleasure to learn it. âhello, iâm the nineteen-year-old trainee, chae hoon,â he gives them a polite bow. âand iâll be performing ârainismâ from the second dream high.â
the notability of the song is in no way something that makes him nervous. he does the practiced movements with ease as a fruit of his many years of training. since they had been told to only choose one skill to show off if they werenât confident with their acting, the boy opted out of singing while dancingâthough he could have done that too, if needed. he uses his two minutes wisely instead of only the time from the scene he had picked. hoon ends his performance with one of his hands up, then brings it down, followed by his torso. âthank you for your time.â he straightens his back again and opens an honest smile.
theyâre told to do each workshop at least once. not that hoon would have liked to skip any. still, when the instructors decide to arrange the pairs themselves, the boy does regret being there a little bit.
âhair & makeupâ wasnât his thing to begin with, which made him excited to learn something new. once he starts to make his way towards one of his roommates, sehoon, all of his limbs grow stiff, and he feels more awkward than characters in movies having to ask someone out. he sure hopes the other doesnât notice it, though. âhello.â hoon bows slightly to the older trainee. youâd expect more (or less) from roommates.
the truth is he doesnât think heâs done anything wrong, and sehoon never did anything wrong to him, but hoon still feels immensely intimidated by the other. even if they had joined the company at the same time, they never seemed to get the way to bond with each other. theyâre the same height, but sehoonâs presence feels much bigger than others. next to their designated chairs is a selection of different makeup products. hoon holds onto his own hand tightly before daring to give another shot at eye contact. âwould you like... to go first?â

itâs always a rough mix between âget your head in the gameâ and ânow or neverâ inside his head when he gets into a basketball game. this was the sport he adored the most to play. always having been athletic and outdoorsy, picking a favorite thing to practice would have been hard. it was only after he watched high school musical that he decided to dedicate himself more to one sport than another. it was something hoon used to openly talk about before in hopes to find anyone else who shared the same feeling. now he mostly keeps that to himself. plus, his admiration of basketball now goes past his love of an old movie.
while the game doesnât start, he stands on a spot by the court replaying the songs in silence. the only show of it is that he unconsciously starts moving to the rhythm. the boy had already warmed up, but maybe the public would see that as an extra exercise from the set instead of him being a bit of a weirdo. itâs only when one of his teammates let him know that the game is going to start that hoon snaps out of it and moves into position.
being usually a pacifist, hoon takes an offensive stance when it comes to sports. the competitive side of him doesnât let him stay still while everyone else gets to have all the fun. thereâs no time for you to blink after the referee blows the whistle for him to raise his hand and ask for the ball. at the start, nothing too extraordinary happens. each team starts to score their first few points and itâs a bit too close to tell whoâll be the victor.
of course, he scores some of those points himself. this wouldnât be his thing if he didnât. itâs only on one of the times he has the ball and starts running towards the other side of the court that someone from the other team comes at him a bit too fast. hoon tumbles to the ground but doesnât get hurt. the boy gets back up quickly and waves a dismissive hand towards the other player. there was no need to apologize. maybe he should even thank him for the opportunity.
the ball is back in his hands, and hoon gets a free throw at the hoop. itâs these quiet times when the songs start playing in his head again. this time in particular is when grabriella appears on the stands to sing only a couple of lines. thatâs all i really need. he rolls his shoulders, gets into position, and takes a shot. the ball makes it in without trouble and a big smile takes over his face. thereâs no time to waste so his feet quickly get back into action, but some of his teammates still run past him and give him a pat on the back. little by little they can win this.
he lets out a sigh as he takes the next piece of paper from the pile. these were the times when he wished he had a greater variety of talents. why was it that the first thing he thought about doing was origami as if he had ever been successful at making such a thing? instead, what he uses the paper for is to write on. heâs seated next to alex who, even now being off to greater endeavors, still participates in events like this. future dreams should start airing again any time now.
and next to his small pile of paper is a small pile of tiny transparent plastic bags he bought at the same stationary shop. the small variety of snacks he bought after a shift at the movie theater. âyouâre writing different things, right? for each one?â hoon looks down and finishes the small doodle of a sun in one of the corners. heâs not the best of artists, either. âi hope itâll make up for the basic snacks.â
