A few ideas about Hannya (which no one requested)
He was the first surviving child of his parents. Reading the manga, I can assume that they were very poor peasants. I think, before Hannya-kun, their children died for various reasons, which usually happened in this social layer. This is the logical reason why they could not observe the cruel, but practical custom to get rid of a child whom parents cannot feed.
At first he was absolutely jealous of Aoshi literally for everyone. His affection was not romantic (because of his whole life I see him as asex), but it was (and remained) ⌠an obsession. As he got older, he learned to appreciate the people around him and managed to subdue his dislike, but there was a time when he hated that someone was next to Aoshi.
This is the reason he got his fighting nickname from Okina. (for reference: the nickname and theatrical mask that this man wears is a demon who is the spirit of a jealous woman in Japanese legends)
At first, Misao was one of those whom Hannya did not like for being close to Aoshi. But she was absolutely not afraid of him and quickly broke his resistance, because she is literally the cutest thing. It hit him. Before that, he was not attached to anyone other than Aoshi, and Misao was annoying for him (because of his non-existent childhood, he did not understand children at all). Misao was the second to show him what it means to be human.
She also made him laugh for the first time in his life.
Of all his friends, he could not accept Shikijou the longest, but later was the closest with him except Aoshi
Hannya is a team mom for his friends or something. (And this is canon. And I really would like that in the anime there was his altercation with Shikijou and Sano, as in the manga)
But he is unstable mentally and himself knows about it. Like Aoshi, he practices meditation, but in his case it does not always help. In addition, he does not like it (although he never admits it)
Heâs really bad with humor. He understands everything literally and always says what he thinks (except for meditation things, heh).

I think Shigure's, 'kindness', for lack of a better word, may suffer from Takaya's writing, not of his character, but of the structure itself of the Unveiling process, which she uses for all the big mysteries of the series. If we follow the onion-layers-peeling analogy, he ends up as this selfish, ruthless figure, whose remorse is only hinted at and kinda thrown judging by his interaction with Akito, the "parting gift" scene, where he exposes parts of his suffering and jealousy in a decidedly unpleasant light (although it is also a pledge of honesty).
So I think it's easy to see why people leave the show and/or the manga with this image of Shigure as a ruthless and inherently selfish, interested person, because this is the supposed core that was ultimately revealed of his character.
Yet, if all the other character writing and understanding could be read as linear, whose development espouses the progressive revelations made about their past, I think Shigure's might be best thought of as cyclical. He is one of the characters that is the most suited to a re-read or re-watch in order to get the grap of.
Watching again the earlier episodes is quite an experience. I spend so much time pondering on his ruthlessness and his all-consuming passion for Akito, that I tend to forget his humour, light-heartedness, all the little ways he helped and sheltered his cousins, how he listens to and is present for them, how kind he is to Kisa, Momiji, Tohru, small gestures like how he stopped Kyo from shaking Hiro for instance, and imparts wisdom and advice left and right, etc.
And it'd be easy to say this is all a mask hiding his true self, a nice little bow and colourful paper wrapping up his dark desires and his real objectives, but the best lies have a seed of truth. And in Shigure's case, I think it is more than a seed. Paradoxically, I think the mask ends up being his real face, and the supposedly core ruthlessness, something he ends up discarding. His curse is to be unable to realise it on his own.
Because that is the form that the Curse took for him. He believes himself incapable of kindness, as focused on his goal as he is, as determined to make his dream come true as he is. But Shigure's implacable side and manipulative tendencies are something that he learned out of necessity as a way to deal with the Sohma family and the controlling nature of the Curse. To lie and dissimulate allow him to regain a parcel of autonomy and preserve himself while giving him the capacity to plan and strategize with a cold head. This is why he cannot be "kind" except as an "afterthought", why there are always layers of self-interest to his character peeking through, but those are always, tellingly, kept on the radar of his self-awareness.
What happens when his goal is reached, the curse broken and he is finally free? When he doesn't need to pretend anymore? My interpretration is a lighter variation of "I become the mask" trope.
I believe he is finally able to realize that the pretense isn't really one. The kind, generous, light-hearted, silly persona isn't so much a mask than one of his faces, one of many, but one no less real, and perhaps more real, than the merciless side and the bitterness he can let finally to rest when the Curse is gone. It parallels the kindness he is finally free to show Akito when he is certain that the tenderness and love are his, not the Bond's, and will be received as such.
Conclusion : Shigure post-curse and chosen self, ergo real self, is best depicted right at the beginning of the series.
By the way. Obviously, Gakuhou is the one who technically owns the school's land and buildings (it's a private school). Just thinking in a circle about the fact that the children of class E are "make a purchase together" ( this mountain). Who do you think they paid?...
Someone tell me why I'm doing this. (Also I'm bad at it)

.When I first wrote that it was wrong to throw away Ayame's things, giving space to the Minagawa lineage of all people, my god, people in comments reassured me. It's so damn funny now that it's obvious that they just threw out the backstory of Ayame, the thing about his ugly act at school, the conversation with Shigure and Hatori ("You acted cruel" / do you even remember your brother's name ") and things about him excitement for Mine and fear of being rejected by her. It's so awful. I won't put spoilers here, ha. Because it doesn't matter anymore. I'm so angry
Headcanon: The name Gakushuu really is it, but not because of professional fanaticism or anything like that. Gakushu was born before his father went insane , and although he was always a fan of education, I think it is not suitable for a child (this has already been pointed out before me) I thought his mother about her husband's name was like "this is the funniest shit I've heard, but I love it." And then she used the first base  ("gaku") for her son as a connection to his father. This is also spelled out in more modern hieroglyphs. Something like "Gaku Jr." Gakuho grumbled about it and was embarrassed. In turn, he is the one who added the second base (this is Shuu "superior" "the one who is superior/ surpassesâ  ). This makes sense in the context of how he taught Gakushuu to perceive their relationship later, . But there from the very beginning. Gakukho, a person who does not hesitate to admit that he is very good at something, absolutely believed that his son would be someone who was even better.
.I've already seen anime-only outraged by the chagrin of the manga fans, but I can still say I'm very disappointed with the third season. I totally hate that they dropped the line of Kakeru, Kyoko, and Ayame. Also Yuchi. And even Tohru. I am not ashamed of this. Because I can understand the missing pieces of things like the first Fullmetal Alchemist series, Ouran High School Host Club, Trigun. It wasn't finished and they went their own way. So is the original series Fruit Baskets. But for a reboot? Here they had the full material and worked with it for two seasons, and then they were like "oh, cmon let's cut it to pieces for no reasonâ
Interesting fact: in addition to the fact that Shigure is a person who subtly feels curse, sees the present state of affairs from childhood and never allows this to drive him into a corner, he is the only one who simultaneously sees Akito as she is and sees opportunities for her. Not a chosen one or a divine being, but as someone with a future. "You're better than that." This is what he is in love with. Not with God (absolutely not, this is the source of his hatred), not with a child (although he could have been compassionate to her when she was, but precisely in her childhood, to see her as a child forever - no, he also disagrees). He feels the need to free her from this, as he understands before Kureno that in this state she will have no future. His perception of reality is different (you can see in what he says about the curse), he sees an opportunity, but this is not something predestined ("the red thread of fate" is a curse, something that Shigure opposes to his own dream of a "future" Akito The one he was expecting personally, the one he gives furidose, saying âhello.â I saw someone say that there is nothing attractive about Akito outside of the curse, so Shigure could not love her, but everything is exactly the opposite. Love is so great that it is almost perverse and does not know pity for anyone absolutely - such love does not require "attractive features in an imperfect person" Behind the crippled creature, the irregularity of which he sees in front of him, Shigure (again one of all) can distinguish a person who is a possibility. He does not see her as a monster or an object of pity. He sees her as a shattered image that can still be reassembled âYou're better than that." Shigure knows that Akito may be different, that the opportunity has been taken away from her, but (as he believes) it can still be made up. âI hope you catch up with us.â These mental words are directed to her as he watches the others in his courtyard. NB: The "possibilities" he sees are not equal to the certainty that Akira talks about before dying. It will not be something obligatory and easy, it is not even some strictly defined expectations of Shigure for her. Essentially, this is space. Something like what Momiji is talking about. The FBA gives us this to the fullest. Shigure is interesting in that he is able to guide others, but at the same time give them space for themselves to develop, become stronger. We see it over and over again. This is what sets him apart from Ren for Akira (Yes, this love-obsession is similar). Akito needs to grow up, to see the world outside her room - this is what we are told and shown directly. And in the future, Akito has space. People other than Shigure. Her solutions. It is important. Nobody gave her this before. The situation is underscored by the old maid's words about that Akito has changed and she doesn't like it. And Akito's answer is that she will move forward. This dialogue shows what Akito is given in her new life, it is ridiculous to ignore it.
A thought that has haunted me since the episode of Yuki's flashback: the animation cannot cope with the depiction of little Ayame and Shigure. Does it make them too ... elongated? Like an error in proportion. In the episode in the manga where Shigure holds Aki in his arms, she takes up more space because his legs are shorter and thicker. Aya and Shigure's eyes are larger in their memories and their faces are not as sharp. Also in Kureno's flashback in the anime, Aya's back "that day" is literally no different from his adult? Kureno is only a year younger, and he looks like a child as he should. It's rubbish. And I get confirmation in the first episode of the third season, where we are shown Hatori's memories. Akito hugs Haa-san around the waist, asking for a hug. We see the ratio of their height and build. And we know that Ha, Shigure and Aya are the same age, and Ha and Shigure literally have the same figure. I mean, come on, Shigure wears Hatori's clothes and it's like something natural to him. And this is a western business suit, not an oversized yukata. I've been thinking about this for a long time, and I have questions for the animators.

Doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge on DW and thought Iâd post #5 here because I never post anything original besides fic updates (when I remember) and because Elwing.
#5: In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love.
On a time of night Eärendil at the helm of his ship saw her come towards him, as a white cloud exceeding swift beneath the moon, as a star over the sea moving in strange courses, a pale flame on wings of storm. And it is sung that she fell from the air upon the timbers of Vingilot, in a swoon, nigh unto death for the urgency of her speed, and Eärendil took her to his bosom; but in the morning with marveling eyes he beheld his wife in her own form beside him with her hair upon his face, and she slept.
[Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath]
Something in that last line makes me shiver every time: this is true magic, the big, visible kind, but then she was LĂşthienâs granddaughter.
Somehow with all the blood and horror going on back at Sirion, the power of this thread of the story almost gets lost. Eärendil gets lambasted for never being home, Elwing is cursed for neglecting her children (Do we know she neglected them? Do we know she didnât try and hide them or send them to safety with a trusted servant? No, we just assume the worst). And yet they were the true heroes of the First Age.
Eärendil was at sea so often because he was seeking a passage west with the idea of reaching the Undying Lands and begging for help. No one else was doing this and some one had to. He was also keeping an eye out for his (in the case of his father, elderly) parents, who had gone off on a similar foolâs errand. When Elwing reached him, flying against the wind, dropping finally to the deck almost dead from her efforts (and she probably had the form of an albatross, not a seagull, seagulls just donât go that far that fast), they had two choices: they could go back to Sirion, which Elwing had left in flames, their childrenâs fate out of their hands, or they could go on. And they had the one bargaining chip the Valar might be impressed by, fastened around Elwingâs neck. They went on.
They went on through storms, through mysterious mists and illusions, the light from the Silmaril cutting through the unnatural gloom. And finally, they breached all the magical barriers set up against them and reached Elvenhome. They did not, at that point, know they would never be allowed to leave and that their eternity was set to be very, very strange. It was a huge price - their youth (they were both very young), their children, everything and everyone they had ever known was gone. But that paid for the Army of the West and Morgothâs eventual downfall. To me it makes them as brave as, or braver, than any of the sword-wielding warriors who came before them. Also, they won.
(and they would see one of their sons again, after the ages of the world had turned and turned again, and their grandsons, and before that they would meet the woman their son had married, and Idril and Tuor were there and I donât care what canon does or doesnât say about that bit).
so true
