chapter thirty-seven of i am human (and i need to be loved) is up! thanks for sticking with me y'all <3
El is asleep, curled up against Robin, her cheeks damp and her brow still furrowed. Robin has an arm around her, holding her steady. But her focus is on Max—how dark the shadows under her eyes are, and how pale her face is, and how it makes her hair look horrifically, violently red against her skin. How she’s just lying there, and they don’t know what happened when One had her in that trance, and they don’t know if One has her still or if she’s going to wake up or anything, and they can’t do anything about it. Robin can’t do anything about it.
All she can do is sit here and stare at her.
nancy and steve talking while they wait for robin to show up to like movie night or something. nancy casually drops "yeah i wish robin was a boy so we could date lol" and before steve has time to unpack that, robin arrives

absolutely in love with how it's basically cannon that andy would say some incredibly cornball shit and just stand back with a smirk and watch emily go through all five stages of grief when she realizes she still wants to fuck her regardless
I like the fact that Robin's nail polish changes color depending on her environment (in a way). Like, Robin had purely black nails in s3. In s4, during band (the car ride with Steve to band practice, the basketball game Lucas had, etc), her nails were this shade of green that matched her band uniform and, in a way, her family video uniform (although it started getting a bit more faded and chipped during that time). Then, it goes back to black polish the moment she started wearing that specific jacket that we, yes, WE all know and love
And then, during the whole pennhurst scene (and the scene where she catches Vickie with her boyfriend at war zone plus the scene where Robin and Steve are sitting near the caravan filling up tanks/bottles, maybe more) Robin has a brown polish on (which I headcanon as Nancy's doing because why not?) And I assume she has that same nail polish on until they go to the Upside-down and etc etc, where Robin stops wearing nail polish in general from there on out, which I'd like to assume is because you don't exactly have time to paint your nails when you're in the middle of an apocalypse.
Anyways, end of tangent, I just had to let that out of my system because GOD I'm a sucker for unimportant details. Excuse my incoherent ranting! <3
The fact that Steve was the first name Robin called for when she got taken by the vines in s4 but Nancy was the first one to rush forward and try to save her is actually so important to me

Supergirl crashed into the ground hard enough to leave a small crater. Her attacker lunged at her, but she fired her heat vision, sending them flying several meters away.
Wonder Woman landed beside her and offered her a hand, pulling her back to her feet.
"Evacuate all the children. Hawkgirl and I will handle the rest," Wonder Woman ordered before launching herself into the sky, slamming one attacker with her shield and cutting through two more with her sword.
"Why are they so strong?" Kara asked as she flew past Kendra.
"They're Raptors!"
Raptors?
Clark had mentioned that was the name of Lex Luthor's mercenary group. They had attacked a high school. Kara didn't know what their objective was, but this wasn't the time to figure it out.
Using her super speed, she swept through the building. Most of the students had already been evacuated, but a handful still remained. With her super strength, she carried them to the waiting buses in groups of three and five. She froze a squad of Raptors that had cornered a frightened boy with her freezing breath, scooped the child into her arms, and rushed him to safety.
Once every student had been evacuated, Supergirl flew toward Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl, who were surrounded by Raptors on the football field.
Kara streaked around the battlefield, firing bursts of heat vision that dropped the mercenaries like flies onto the grass. Kendra spread her wings before snapping them forward, unleashing a powerful shockwave that hurled back the Raptors trying to surround her. She charged through them, smashing helmets with her morning star. Diana sent her shield spinning in a wide arc, knocking several enemies off their feet while driving others back with her sword.
Within minutes, every last Raptor was on the ground.
The three heroes took Diana's Lasso of Truth and used it to bind the mercenaries together in one large pile to keep them from escaping.
They landed in front of the prisoners, Kara leading the way. Kendra reached down to remove one Raptor's helmet, but Kara caught her wrist. A strange electrical hum began emanating from every suit, followed by a sharp, piercing beep. Every Raptor's head suddenly lolled to one side at an unnatural angle. Kendra immediately pulled off one of the helmets and pressed two fingers against the man's neck.
"Dead," she said, frowning.
Kara and Kendra removed several more helmets, checking each one for a pulse.
Nothing.
"They're all dead," Diana confirmed, her expression unreadable. "They kill themselves when they're captured to avoid revealing information about whoever they're working for—or because they fear a fate worse than death. It was a tactic used during the World Wars. Cleopatra famously chose a similar end as well."
Kara and Kendra stared at her, speechless. Sometimes they forgot just how old Diana really was... and everything she had lived through.
"Weren't all the Raptors arrested along with Lex Luthor?" Kara asked, frowning.
She didn't like this. Too many strange things had been happening lately.
"They were," said Mr. Terrific—Michael Holt—as he landed beside them. His T-Spheres dispersed around the bodies, scanning them with thin laser beams. "These are new recruits. Their equipment incorporates recently developed LuthorCorp technology."
"That doesn't make any sense," Kendra said. "Lex is locked away in a maximum-security prison. There's no way he's controlling them."
"True," Michael replied. "But he's not the only Luthor in this city." He looked directly at Kara.
"No..." she whispered.
No. Lena wouldn't do something like this. She would never attack innocent children. But then... how could Raptors be carrying brand-new LuthorCorp technology if she wasn't involved? Who else could possibly have access to it?
Kara wanted to trust Lena. Every instinct she had insisted Lena was innocent. But what if she was letting her feelings cloud her judgment? What if Lena had been manipulating her all along? Distracting her... setting her up.
She could feel the weight of her teammates' eyes on her.
Without another word, Kara shot into the sky. She needed answers.
----
Lena was watching the news on one of the monitors in her office while working with her executive team when the breaking report began. It had taken her only a single close-up image of one of the attackers to recognize them.
Raptors.
This was bad. And it only made her current situation worse.
The windows of her office exploded inward. Glass scattered across the floor as Supergirl landed hard in the middle of the room, her cape billowing behind her. Every employee on the executive floor froze.
"Everyone out." Lena didn't even look up from the document she was signing.
She had been expecting this. Whether it was Kara or any other member of the Justice League, she had known someone would come.
Nobody argued. Within seconds, the office doors closed behind the last employee.
Silence settled between them. Only then did Lena lift her eyes.
Kara looked furious. Her breathing was uneven—not from exhaustion, but from barely restrained anger. Her suit was torn and scorched from the battle. Lena watched countless thoughts race behind those blue eyes, as if Kara were weighing every possible move before deciding what to do.
"I take it you're not here for coffee."
Kara's jaw tightened.
"No."
"You broke my windows," Lena said, pointing toward the shattered glass before calmly returning to the paperwork in front of her. "And you're paying for them."
Kara ignored the remark and slowly began pacing around the office.
"Raptors attacked Metropolis." She took a step closer. "They targeted a school." The words came out sharper than she'd intended. "They attacked civilians." A pause. "They attacked children."
"I know." Lena's expression darkened into one of genuine disgust. "I saw the news."
She would never understand people willing to hurt children—innocent lives that had barely begun experiencing the world. "Were there any casualties?" she asked more quietly.
"No."
"Good."
Kara searched her face. No satisfaction. No guilt. Only relief. Somehow, that only made this harder.
"Their equipment was new." Another step. "LuthorCorp technology."
Lena leaned back in her chair without saying a word. She already knew where this conversation was headed.
"They killed themselves before we could interrogate them." Kara planted both fists on Lena's desk. "They had access to technology that only LuthorCorp manufactures." She met Lena's gaze. "Explain it." Her voice had hardened.
Lena stared back for several long seconds.
"You think I ordered an attack on children?" The disbelief in her voice was unmistakable.
"I don't know what to think anymore!" Kara snapped, turning away in frustration as a lock of blonde hair fell across her face.
Something inside Lena's chest twisted painfully. Had she expected accusations like this eventually? Yes. Had she ever imagined they would come from Kara? No. She had believed that after everything they'd shared, Kara trusted her. Or at least trusted her intentions. She had been wrong. And she hated how much it hurt.
"You don't?" Lena scoffed.
"No."
Kara looked back at her with those blue eyes Lena adored far more than she should.
"That's disappointing."
Kara frowned.
"I'm trying to save people!" she shouted, slamming a fist onto the desk.
"Don't yell at me!" Lena slammed both palms onto the desk and stood. "The only thing I've done since arriving in this city is help its people." She stepped closer until they were nearly face to face. "So perhaps we're on the same side."
Lena straightened and walked toward the holographic display behind her desk.
"You still haven't answered my question." Kara rounded the desk after her.
"I don't need to." Lena let out a weary laugh.
She hated this conversation. She would have preferred anyone else to question her. Anyone but Kara. It wouldn't have hurt nearly as much.
"HOPE."
The AI materialized instantly.
"Good afternoon, Miss Luthor."
"I need a complete list of everyone with access to LuthorCorp technology." Lena never took her eyes off Kara, who was now avoiding hers.
"Specify."
"Board members. Investors. Military contractors. Suppliers. Licensed buyers. Research partners. Former employees with security clearance."
"Assembling database." Blue holograms illuminated the office.
Kara watched silently.
"...Done."
"Transfer everything to a flash drive."
"Completed."
A small USB drive slid out of a hidden compartment in Lena's desk. Lena picked it up, crossed the room, and stopped directly in front of Kara.
"There." She shoved the drive firmly against Kara's chest. "Everyone who could have purchased, stolen, or gained access to my technology."
Kara looked down at the drive as she took it, her fingers brushing Lena's hand.
"You just handed me classified information."
"If it helps stop whoever did this..." Lena pulled her hand away and shrugged. "...I don't particularly care."
Silence settled between them.
Kara looked down at the flash drive before slowly raising her eyes to meet Lena's.
"Thank you." The words came quietly, almost defeated. She knew she'd crossed a line.
"I suppose we're finished." Lena simply looked away.
Kara hesitated before turning toward the shattered windows. She had barely taken two steps.
"Oh." Lena's voice stopped her. "One more thing."
A part of Lena's brain screamed that what she was about to do was incredibly stupid. The other part—the bitter, resentful part—refused to stay quiet.
Kara looked back.
Lena folded her arms.
"You should tell Clark Kent to be more careful about where he changes into Superman."
Everything stopped.
"...What?" A faint blush crept onto Kara's face.
Lena smiled, small, knowing.
"The warehouse on Fifth Street had security cameras." Silence. "You'd be surprised how easy it is to access CCTV footage around Metropolis."
Kara crossed the office before Lena could blink.
She slammed Lena against the nearest bookshelf hard enough to rattle the shelves, sending books and antique figures crashing to the floor. The wood splintered beneath the impact. The flash drive slipped from Kara's hand and clattered onto the hardwood.
Lena's heartbeat quickened. Not from fear. Never from fear. She knew it was completely messed up to find Kara's aggression attractive—but honestly, could anyone blame her? Kara looked incredibly hot when she was angry.
Her suit was torn from the battle, her breathing ragged, blue eyes glowing with crimson sparks as heat vision threatened to ignite, the muscles in her neck taut with restrained fury.
"Your teammates should be more careful with their secret identities."
Kara planted one arm against the bookshelf beside Lena's head. Although Kara was shorter than her, every time she cornered Lena she somehow managed to make her feel smaller. For a fleeting second, Lena's mind wandered back to the kiss they'd shared yesterday. She shoved the memory away. Now was not the time.
"You figured out the entire League?"
"It wasn't particularly difficult." Lena shrugged. "You don't have a secret identity, neither does Diana Prince, and neither does Guy. I figured Kendra out through Eve. Clark only took a couple of recordings to confirm. Bruce Wayne and Michael Holt were the only ones who actually gave me trouble... but I figured them out eventually."
"Give me one reason not to kill you right now for knowing all of that," Kara muttered. Her eyes burned fully red.
Lena didn't flinch. She knew Kara would never hurt her. But now she was genuinely angry. How dare Kara threaten her like that?
"If I wanted to hurt you—or anyone in the League—I wouldn't have told you that I know." It was obvious.
Kara's eyes slowly faded back to their natural blue. She let out a long breath. She knew Lena was right.
Lena gently took Kara's chin between her fingers, forcing her to meet her eyes.
"If I figured it out..." She leaned in slightly. "...someone else might too." Her voice softened. "I'm telling you because I want you to be careful." Another beat. "Warn the League. I don't want any of you getting hurt."
She released Kara's face and folded her arms, leaning back against the damaged bookshelf. Kara searched her expression. There wasn't a trace of deception. Only concern.
"Are you still going to kill me?" Lena tilted her chin up in challenge. “Go ahead." She wasn't afraid of death. It was one of the few things she'd made peace with years ago.
Kara stared into her eyes. Sapphire meeting azure. Lena could practically see the storm raging behind Kara's gaze. Anger, confusion, relief… something dangerously close to longing.
Kara's grip tightened on the bookshelf until another section of wood splintered beneath her hand.
Then—
She kissed her.
Lena froze. For exactly half a second. Then she kissed Kara back just as fiercely, pouring every ounce of her anger, hurt, and frustration into the kiss. Kara's hands tightened around Lena's waist. Lena buried one hand in Kara's blonde hair. She bit Kara's lower lip hard enough to earn a sharp inhale—not enough to hurt a Kryptonian, but enough to vent everything she'd been holding back.
The kiss lasted only a few seconds. But when they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathing hard.
Kara stepped back first. Lena blinked once before meeting her eyes again.
"And now..." She placed both hands against Kara's shoulders. "...would you kindly stop looming over me?" She shoved. Kara didn’t move an inch.
The office doors burst open.
"Kara!" Wonder Woman strode inside, her shield still strapped across her back. "You flew off before we could—" She stopped. Her gaze traveled over the scene.
Lena standing against the damaged bookshelf. Kara far too close. Broken windows. Books scattered across the floor.
"...Am I interrupting?" Diana folded her hands neatly in front of her with perfect composure, though an amused smile tugged at the corners of her mouth.
Lena looked at Diana. Then back at Kara. Then at Diana again. Something ugly twisted in her chest. Kara used to have a crush on her, a small voice whispered in the back of her mind. The sting of Kara accusing her mixed with her jealousy, poisoning every thought.
"No." Lena forced a polite smile as she shoved Kara firmly out of her way. She walked back to her desk and caught Kara's astonished expression. Apparently, Kara hadn't expected Lena to be strong enough to actually move her.
Lena calmly straightened her blazer. She looked from Diana to Kara.
"I've answered your questions." She bent down, picked up the flash drive from the floor, and pressed it back into Kara's hand. "Now kindly leave my office."
Without another glance, Lena sat down behind her desk.
Kara opened her mouth to speak. Diana beat her to it.
"Our apologies for the disturbance, Lady Lena." The Amazon inclined her head respectfully. "And for my partner's lack of manners." She placed both hands on Kara's shoulders, gently but firmly steering the Kryptonian toward the shattered windows. "I hope you have a pleasant day." A second later, they were gone.
Lena waited until they had disappeared from sight. Then she stood. She grabbed a porcelain vase from one of the shelves and hurled it across the room. It shattered against the opposite wall. A scream of frustration tore from her throat. She was hurt and exhausted.
Lena had always known that people would distrust her simply because she was a Luthor. She knew they'd suspect her the moment something went wrong. But she'd truly believed Kara would be different.
She had been wrong.
Kara, like everyone else, still thought she might one day become another Lex Luthor. For the first time, Lena didn't understand Supergirl. One moment Kara was accusing her of terrorism. The next she was kissing her. Lena felt used. As though Kara were playing with her heart without even realizing it.
Her hands began to tremble and she felt dizzy. She needed to calm down. It wasn't safe for her to lose control like this. She had spent years teaching herself patience. Years learning to suppress her emotions. She couldn't afford to break now.
She took a slow, steady breath. Lena caught her reflection in one of her monitors. Her eyes were bloodshot.
Lena froze.
Tonight's gala was going to be... difficult.
