April is sexual assault awareness month. Iâm not sure if thatâs made its way to tumblr but I feel that itâs a topic that is not talked about enough and that itâs important I speak on it.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experience sexual assault in their life time. I believe those statistics are wrong and itâs a lot higher than that. Many donât speak out, many donât tell anyone or ask for help.
Majority of my friends have experienced some sort of sexual assault and so have I. Itâs not something to joke about and if you have experienced something like that you are not alone.
I notice people always like to make excuses, âwell you shouldnât have been wearing thatâ, âyou shouldnât have drank that muchâ, âyou shouldnât have hung out with himâ. It is NEVER the victims fault, we shouldnât have to walk around expecting to get assaulted. We shouldnât have to change what we wear because people canât control themselves. So remember itâs never your fault.
Sexual assault isnât always violent itâs not always black and white it can leave you confused violated and blaming yourself. After I got assaulted I didnât really understand what happened and I didnât know if it counted. Here is the definition âwhen someone either touches another person in a sexual manner without consent or makes another person touch them in a sexual manner without consentâ
I feel that as a society we have forgotten what consent means so Iâm going to re explain. Something being non consensual isnât just saying no.
Flirting is not consent
Pressuring till they say yes is not consent
Hesitation is not consent
Fear is not consent
Being unconscious is not consent
Being intoxicated or drugged is not consent
Saying stop is not consent
Previous consent is not consent
Being in a relationship is not consent
Threatening is not consent
Guilt tripping is not consent
Just because someone didnât say no does not mean that it means yes.
Consent is freely given without pressure, itâs reversible itâs enthusiastic and you should feel safe when giving it.
You are not alone. You are valid. And donât be scared to reach out for help.
