"my grandfather is a character in lord of the flies"
WHAT
that's my favourite piece of family trivia to drop π€
the popular story is that lord of the flies was inspired by golding's students at the all-boys grammar school where he taught. apparently my granddad and his identical twin brother were both in golding's english class around the time that he was writing it and, as you may recall, there are a pair of identical twin brothers in the book - sam and eric. ergo, my grandad always claimed that they were based on him and his brother
the dates line up, but maybe take it with a pinch of salt because this is all just according to my granddad. and kind of a weird brag on his part, given, you know, what happens

i recently finished and adored lean cat, savage cat by lauren j. joseph!
it's a highly entertaining literary novel about an aspiring artist, charli, who meets and falls for moody, bowie-esque musician-on-the-rise, alexander. charli follows him into the messy, glamorous, feverish hedonism of berlin's queer club scene as his lover/manager, but as alexander rises to the heights of fame, charli begins to lose herself and her connection to reality. eventually, you as the reader have to question what's true and what might have been delusion all along - and it's really fun
the writing is so so stylish and witty with a great observational humour. at the risk of sounding pretentious, it's christopher isherwood meets nancy mitford for the modern day. and also transgender. i'd really been looking forward to it after enjoying her debut and yet it still exceeded my expectations!
James Fenton, Ten Little Bullets, and the lost Les Mis
(First off: Marianne, please let me know if you have any problem with me copy-pasting one of your AbaissΓ© posts from β06 and Iβll take this down.Β I was trying to rephrase the stuff you covered re: Fenton and lyrics, but you said it all better than I could restate it.)
Many Les Mis fans know Herbert Kretzmer as the musicalβs English-language (and therefore arguably most important) lyricist, but fewer are aware that he wasnβt the first man to attempt the job.Β The first guy was one James Fenton, who was fired for being unable to keep to the showβs schedule.Β Not much of his work survives but his song βTen Little Bulletsβ was returned to Gavrocheβs death scene for the Broadway revival.Β As Marianne reported at the time (link goes to AbaissΓ©):
So, for those who havenβt been following news of the revival as obsessively as I have, one of the changes has been to cut βLittle Peopleβ entirely and have Gavroche sing a song called βTen Little Bulletsβ in his death scene. Ten little bullets in my hand ten little snipers neat and cleanβ one for the king of this great land two for the aristocracy three for the bishops and the clergymen four for the prefects of policeβ give me a chance, Iβll take the lot of themβ ten little chances to be free Close your eyes, Iβll say when, count to ten. It was written back in the early 80s by James Fenton, the original lyricist for Les Mis, who was fired in 1984 for taking forever to finish and replaced by Herbert Kretzmer. As far as I know, none of Fentonβs lyrics are in the present incarnation of the show, except of course βTen Little Bulletsβ in the revival. Itβs sung to the same tune as Gavrocheβs part in βLook Down.β The only other surviving example of Fentonβs lyrics is another Gavroche song, entitled βYouβ and presumably set to the tune of βLa faute Γ β¦β You thought you wouldnβt notice we had nothing to eat You thought we wouldnβt mind we had to sleep on the streets You thought you wouldnβt bother if we drank from a ditch You thought we wouldnβt wonder what had made you so rich You made up all the rules You must have thought us foolsβ¦ You kicked us in the gutter and you laughed in our face You dragged us through the courtroom and you taught us our place You preached at us on Sunday looking solemn and sleek You cheated us on Monday and the rest of the week We saw the coaches passing on the way to the ball I wonder if you noticed we had nothing at all We smelt you coming out again with brandy for breath I wonder if you noticed we were starving to death Be careful as you go You donβt know what we know You drove us to despair You thought we didnβt care Based on these two samples, which are much more clever and socially relevant than Kretzmerβs sentimental dreck, I would give my right arm to see the rest of Fentonβs lyrics for Act I. (He never made it to Act II, apparently, though he sketched bits of it out.) Behrβs βLes MisΓ©rables: History in the Makingβ goes on to say that Fentonβs lyrics were more poetic than singable, and thought to be too allusive and esoteric for general audiences. Which really only makes me want to see them more.
I heartily agree (but such are the wages of being an incurable fandom hipster).Β Fenton, if Wikipedia is pointing me to the same Fenton, is a poet, journalist, and critic who used to teach poetry at Oxford and appears to be a pretty darn acclaimed English writer.Β Heβs also still alive.Β Iβm just going to sit here and sigh at the thought that it might still be possible for someone to hunt him down and wring whatever is left of his LM work out of him (assuming that Les Miz The Musical Sensation hasnβt somehow sworn him to silence).
Iβm also going to order that Behr book that Marianne mentions ASAP.Β For anyone whoβs interested, you can currently snag a copy for around $4 incl. shipping on Amazon.
