And what if I actually finished this?
I was bored and frustrated and maybeeeee started writing a mini article thingy about reading and why it's important. and i wanted to share!!!! So if it's good yaya! I might finish it and if it's bad...uhhh....I'll burn at the stake. Anyway enjoy.
We’ve always had books in my house. We always had some form of literature to read and divulge in. Whether it was magazines, novellas, political biographies, or graphic novels; reading was always a pastime.
I am lucky for these things, I know this. And I am forever grateful for the knowledge of literacy that flows through my household.
But I’m not writing about books to simply brag about my family’s vast collection. I’m here to talk about something that pairs quite nicely with books.
That’s right, I’m sorry to say this but most of my classmates have no clue how to read past the 7th grade level. Which is fine, if you’re Amish and only staying in school for your middle school diploma.
It’s not so great when you’re a junior or senior months away from graduating. I know that adults and many professors will scoff at the evidence that I’m using for this, seeing as it’s clearly being pulled straight from my asshole but I DON’T CARE!
It’s a real problem, you just have to look around you. And my theory as to why literacy rates are going so low?
Well maybe not entirely because of phones but they are a great distraction and an amazing way to pass time! Bored at home? Phone. Bored on the bus? Phone. Bored? Phone.
It was a simple solution. If I need to kill time, why not also kill the battery life on my device by playing angry birds and grunting frustratingly when I don’t win the super duper hard level?
Because you’re also killing your brain. Probably.
Like I said, evidence is coming FROM MY ASS. If you don’t like it, leave. There’s probably tons of articles written by actual journalists with degrees that cover this subject.
Anyway, there’s a lyric or quote (whichever came first I don’t care) from Mean Girls, spoken by the amazing and almost too gay to function: Damian. And I think it relates to my splurge of word-vomit so I’m adding it here.
“I once saw her put a ‘d’ in the word ‘orange’ - Damian
I know, I know, why are you mentioning this? Because I fully believe there are kids in my school who would put a ‘d’ in the word ‘orange’.
You know what people did before we had angry birds, snapchat, tiktok, etc. etc.? People had books. Not to say that they don’t now. I will occasionally see an old man reading the newspaper, or a middle aged woman reading probably the most explicit, sexed up, smutty novel imaginable while waiting for the bus. And to those people, I give my thanks.
But there’s not as many erotic novellas being read anymore. At least not to kill time.
No but I’m being serious.
Mystical written porn aside, reading is so important and is too important to be glossed over. It helps you learn new words, phrases, and worlds. You can learn so much from a book. That’s why schools have you read them.
I fell in love with The Great Gatsby when we read it for school and I love the Greek tragedy Antigone even more. It was fun to dive into lessons about wealth and economies while turning around and discovering the rich and wild history of the Greeks. I never could understand how someone would look at literature with disdain.
Unless it’s a book by Trump or any of his cohorts.
I just can never see the nonappeal of reading.
Anyways I’m sleepy. I was ranting thanks goodnight.
