One thing I love about Edith Stein’s letters is the way she references philosophical concepts the same way people do movies or anime nowdays.

Well... obviously her references are fun and lighthearted. But I still worry my comparison is trivial (or trivalizes Stein or her writing). Ingarden wrote a thesis or dissertation[?] on Bergson, and in the 1st letter in this book she gave him advice on that.

That's not as superficial as the pop-culture reference game, not that I'm completely above it or judge anyone simply for referencing media (but think of comment chains on reddit where it's just users reciting a scene word-for-word).

I wish LLMs hadn't ruined perfectly cromulent phrases for a lot of people, sometimes a thing is in fact, "not X" and actually is "Y" but I can't ever say that now, can I?

I posted a while back about how it's not just "it's not just x, but y". Two examples:

I think it's obvious that the first is informative in a way the second isn't (vagueness of the 'Y' phrase "cultural moments", the next phrase not really following up on the 'Y'. I can see "hits" being "designed to stick in your head", but "cultural moments"?). I worry that many of the people who've watched videos about spotting LLM-generated writing would immediately judge both to have been generated just from the superficial similarity.

I guess you could say, "it's not just the form, it's the content"!

In Husserl's terms: "What these thoughts indicate is something other than what they express"

The sense in which a word or sentence is a sign, distinct from the ordinary use of "sign" as primarily indicative (footprints, bells, graffiti as signifying that people have been here before as opposed to whatever the words mean).

The idea that indications are necessarily tied to "here and now", while (the meaning of) expressions are ideal and can be repeated. The 'meanings' of "it's raining", "il pleut", etc as abstracted from particular circumstances and speakers (if I say 'it's raining' here and now, I might be right or wrong)
