Wirklich?!
I read the first chapter online, not sure about it. My library has a more recent translation available and I wonder if I should request that.
I found a selection that focuses on the story of 'Uli and Aggie'.
I liked the first chapter! Some of his descriptions remind me of Murdoch's, they do touch on philosophical topics without losing focus on the narrative. It's always relevant to what someone is experiencing in this moment or what they're anticipating or expecting to happen. There's nothing uniquely phenomenological about it I don't think? But I'm fine with that, and I want to read on and see how Ulrich and Agathe's reunion goes.
I guess I'm trying to say that I'm interested in their story, and I'd hate for them end up being reduced to mere examples like "Alice and Bob". I think that comment in OP is misleading in calling the work an essay.
Maybe calling the novel an essay is like saying that Ruri no Houseki is an actual "introduction to mineralogy" textbook.
Complaint, and I guess a spoiler:

"I have not read the book, but only parts of scattered pages - I can't choke down any more".
Is that better than not reading any of the book at all if you're going to have a strong opinion on it?

The teacher can not tell me love
it is not one's "nature" that is the subject of any experience, but one's person
Yes, but.. is my person free to stray from my nature?
Maybe I can do it tomorrow later today.
