Arthur closed his eyes, as his heart thundered in his chest. Falling back on the old breathing exercises he had used back in two, Arthur focused on breathing in and out as evenly as he could - as he waited for Pilgrim to be brought out of the makeshift treatment room. Feeling a sharp twinge in his own ribs, Arthur ignored it, as he tried not to think of the moment he had witnessed the young dog becoming trapped under a piece of debris. So many others had lost more than he had - and yet here he was, in a semi-panicked state over the well being of his dog. He had heard that not everyone had made it through the portkeys. Pietro, Kol, Finnick and Dylan were missing - and for now, presumed lost. Seeing the heartbreak in Annieâs face as the last portkey arrived without Finnick had been painful, as had the moments silence that had followed. But then the world caught up, and Arthur had brought Pilgrim here - to the makeshift medical facility - after ensuring the young witch he had aided was safely under anotherâs care. So focused, was Arthur on his breathing and not allowing his panic to get the better of him (he didnât have Pilgrim this time to help him through the attack); that the Knight was caught by surprise when a hand landed on his shoulder - causing him to visibly flinch. âS-Sorry,â Arthur said, as he opened his eyes to greet the other. âIâm sorry.â
Leoâs heart had begun lurching in his chest, uneven and painful, and aside from all of the other disasters that had crashed down on their heads, he couldnât pinpoint exactly why. Years of experience in emergency trauma had taught him how to keep, if not calm, then at least breathing steadily to avoid exactly such a reaction, so he was puzzled -- but when he saw Arthurâs shoulderâs shaking, and watched as his ribs hitched with uneven breath, he wondered if he hadnât caught onto what was happening.
âNothinâ to apologize for,â he said. His hand tightened slightly on Arthurâs shoulder, more gentle than the gruff tone that came from his mouth. âCan you do me a favor anâ hold your breath for a count of five. . .there you go. . . and let it out.â He knew Arthur knew the breathing techniques. . .had, in fact, helped him learn them once upon a hell of a long time ago. Sometimes reminders were necessary, particularly when a panic attack looked like it was barreling down the way. He waited until the tremors under his hand lessened, at least, before letting it fall from Arthurâs shoulder. âYou waitinâ to hear about Pilgrim?â

âBut I needed too much help,â he reasoned. âThe only reason Iâm still alive is because of other people. And Iâm not ungrateful, nyet, but I vant to be able to save myself too. And maybe return favor.â
âOkay,â Leo replied slowly after a beat of silence. He still doubted, seriously, that anyone would think Pavel owed some kind of heroics. Still. âGuess I canât fault a man for thinkinâ that way. My advice, since you didnât ask, would be to start small.â He shrugged. âDo what youâve been doing, with the tech help, anâ once in a while save someone from gettinâ scolded to death by helping âem eat their lunch.â

Arthur frowned, as he shook his head. âIt hasnât been so bad that weâve not been able to at least make some form of connection. Pavel did say these things are old, but theyâve been reliable.â Arthur replied with a slight shrug, as he looked up from his still black screen to where Leonard had taken up his own tablet. Heâd been trying to check on Ameliaâs condition now Scott was up and about again after the administering of the cure - but with failed attempts. âAny luck?âÂ
âDamned piece of junk,â Leo muttered as his own tablet beeped at him once and refused to turn connect. Only imagining Pavelâs wince kept him from throwing the thing. He settled for knocking his knuckle against the screen, and then raised his eyes from it to look at Arthur. âNo. Then again these things anâ I donât always get along so well.âÂ
âDepends on how you define âinhabitableâ, but, essentially, yes.â He hadnât made the mess any worse since their last discussion, but he hadnât exactly made it any better either. Besides, he had distinctly bigger concerns at this point - but he forced himself to go and unlock the office door all the same. Taking Arthurâs advice had seemed like a good idea five minutes ago, but now it seemed distinctly less so.Â
Leo passed a cursory glance around their shared office as he entered, snorted quietly at the chaos, but otherwise didnât comment. He snagged his chair from his desk and sank into it gratefully, stretching both legs out underneath the desk. âShoot.â
âI believe zâhis is referred to as irony, yes?â She wasnât entirely sure, but that sounded correct. Her eyeline followed Leoâs gesturing hands, and Wanda nodded. âAlright, I will not. Would you be interested?â
âMe?â Leo sat back in his chair a little, amused. âDoubtful. No time for it, for one thing.âÂ
âSays the one whoâs hearing will soon fail him due to his old age,â Kol quipped with a tilt of his head, expression smug as ever. âMelissa and I are actually rather good friends. Much better than you and I, for that matter. So why would I bother to converse with you when I can just ask somebody I donât detest?â
Leo shook his head. âI never thought these wordsâd pass my lips, but youâre right. So long as youâre not tryinâ to scare the living daylights out of her with that mug of yours, I suppose thatâs a better solution. Then we donât have to have this conversation ever again. Win-Win.â

âAh, Dr McCoy, yes, well done - I need to give you your files back. And I need to speak to you. Preferably not in the middle of the medical wing.â
âSpeak with me about what? --All right, all right, not here.â Leo shrugged. âOffice open anâ inhabitable?âÂ
Pavelâs gaze drifted to the ground beneath his feet, avoiding the doctorâs stare. Instead of answering vocally he simply gave a shrug, then bit into the sandwich slice he had been holding on to.Â
Leo watched Pavel avoid his eyes, tapping his fingers absently on top of his desk. âShrugginâ doesnât tell me much,â he said. His tone came out more gruff than he'd meant; he cleared his throat and tried again. "Everybody needs help, time to time. Doesnât make âem a liability, kid.â
âMaybe. But Iâm more of a mommy issues kindaâ guy, my dad split when I was like â six,â he shrugged, unusually honest. âWhy, scared Iâm gonnaâ catch somethinâ? Itâs kindaâ fascinating, isnât it? All that blood, coming from creatures whoâre supposed to heal. Mustaâ been some pretty messed up bacteria.â As for being alone, Tate didnât have an answer to that. Heâd probably go bug the twins soon.Â
âWell, donât.âÂ
Leo hadnât heard of -- or ever considered -- the virus as âfascinatingâ. He squinted at the strange young man. âIf you want to call it that. Weâre still not sure whatâs keepinâ the healing factors from kicking in. Somethinâ about the pathogens constantly shifting.â
Arthur swallowed, as his fingers began to tap the edges of the tablet screen. Thinking for a moment, he took in his brotherâs schooled features before replying in the same careful tones. âI-Iâm tired of - being afraid, Leonard. Tomas and Dorian - theyâre still in here,â he pointed to his temple. âI can still feel their compulsions as strongly as if they had only just been placed. And, that will never fully leave - Alanaâs said as much.â He smiled humourlessly. âI canât even look at that sword without feeling like I want to be physically sick or⌠well, you remember.â the blood, the now white scars. âBut I have to try. Merlin was right when he said I couldnât just give it up - but, to do that, to reclaim what was lost. I have to first confront the demonâs behind it.â
âYou donât need to worry. Iâm alright.â Arthur assured with a weak smile. Biting his lower lip, the knight tilted his head slightly. âI believe my humor may have suffered however. Gwaineâs made it mission to improve my jokes - heâs failed spectacularly, apparently.â Arthur shifted, before offering the doctor a small smirk upon remembering his brotherâs reaction to his comment about Katherine. âSo, how damaged are your eardrums?â
Leo exhaled a slow breath, but not slow enough that Arthur would miss it over the communicator. He rubbed his hands over his eyes. You donât need to worry about me. Sure. âNot needinâ to doesnât exactly make a difference,â he pointed out wryly as he let his hand fall. âIâm gonna worry. But I think youâre making a good call, tryinâ to work through all of this. Anything I can do to help?âÂ
âThis is exactly why I came back to life,â he said, his expression serious despite his joking. âThanks, I know.â Dean gave the doctor a smug smile. âIâll keep it as Plan B, if hunting falls through.â Joking aside, he was almost positive heâd done something of the sort whilst drunk at some barâs open mic night.Â
He couldnât explain how he knew, but despite him asking, he was already sure Kat was okay. Somewhat subconsciously though, Dean lifted a hand and tucked some hair behind his ear at the comment, grumbling his reply. âDonât know why I canât just cut it off. I had to tie it into a bun during traininâ yesterday. A bun,â he repeated, looking incredulous. At the reply about the twins, he smiled, his laugh sounding more like a huff. âCute. Either one as grumpy as you yet, or were they blessed with their momâs genes?â
âA bun,â Leo repeated, deadpan. âWell, look at you, puttinâ on Capitol airs. Next thing you know youâll change your name anâ wear a smug expression. . .oh, hang on.â
âI wouldnât worry about it. Sooner or later youâll be out of there anâ back to your own self.â Leo raised his eyebrows towards the continued teasing about his family. It was good-natured, he knew; Dean was close enough to Katherine -- and, he supposed, himself -- to actually know the twins, and to care about their welfare. âI would worry about how much shit youâre givinâ me about my kids. Youâre about to get stuck with babysittinâ duty if you donât shut it.â

âHas anyone managed to reach out to the others in the Capitol? I⌠Donât seem to be able to reach anybody.â
âWhat? . . .Maybe somethinâ is up with the communication.â Leo grabbed his own tablet and tried to make it connect. âPavel had to mess with âem the other day.â
âAlright, donât all go rushing to thank me at once.â
