firecracker-lizzyy:
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Liz turned back to the groceries on the counter, picking at the plastic with no actual intention of putting anything away too quickly. Scowling at them with her back to Leo, she felt the stark contrast bleeding into the air around them. In the time theyād spent apart, sheād had to change some things about herself. Now ā she did groceries. Now, she did babies. In fact, she did diapers, skin rashes, hand moisturizer and occasionally going to bed before ten oāclock. But the thing about these changes was that theyād all happened without her knowing, a slow and gradual aging of her character, providing less of a scare factor. Until she was faced directly with an image of her past that is, sitting behind her, clearly ebbing in hate about something.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā The other night had been all kinds of weird, wrapped up in a colossal illusion of possibly everything sheād tried not to feel in the last handful of years without Leo around. Because there were always going to be the same impossible to answer questions. The other night⦠why did she do it? Why did he? What would have happened to them if sheād stayed? Who would they be to each other now if sheād never even met Gus in the first place? She didnāt want to talk about any of it because she knew she didnāt have the answers.
Ā Ā Ā āOkay, first of all ā youāre a grown ass man. Do what you want.ā She began sharply, but of course, Liz knew exactly what he was talking about. She wasnāt the best at giving people chances, at leaving trails⦠but with him, it would always be different.Ā āOkay look, what was I supposed to do? Things change. I ended up hating the city, it was full of all those fucking freaks with their Vegas Romances and literal bipolar bullshit, I just ā I outgrew that shit. Just like I outgrew my momās place in Connecticut, I needed a change before I blew myself up.ā She said, turning back around.Ā āSo I moved here and I sent you the addresses, I figured if you were still working in the city you could drop by ā which you didnāt, which is cool ā thatās fine. But then, you know, shit started getting seriousā¦ā She side glanced away, feeling a little awkward to lay it all out so dot point. āYou know, like, I got pregnant. My mom moved in with us for a while. Gus got a real job. Things just got more and more crazy for a while there and yeah, I guess I didnāt keep you as up to date as I should have but sometimes⦠I just donāt want to fuckingĀ deal with the fact that my life goes up the fucking ass of Hell, every time I try and make a difference.ā She ranted, leaving no room for Leo to interject even if he wanted to. āSo Gus, heās got this cool new job, right? Like, heās been in LA for the last I donāt know how long and weāre doing this whole co-parenting thing by correspondence mostly which is ā let me tell you ā not great, itās the fucking worst actually and all my friends who were around and there when Miles was born are totally fucking non-existent now because, well, who knows, Iām kind of a difficult person to be around right? So basicallyā¦ā Liz finally concluded.Ā āYeah, I might have done kind of a shit thing by moving awayā¦. But donāt act like Iām doing you some kind of out-of-this-world decency by letting you be a part of it when you know damn well my door is always fucking open for you⦠Okay? Weāre family. And if familyās taught us anything, itās about how much bullshit we gotta go through to deal with each other.āĀ
Liz was so noisy. Ā Minutes after sheād left the last of her words to bury their sharp tips into him Leo could still feel the ringing tone of her voice inside his ears. Ā Days before this her attempts of filler conversations were only a gray static, they didnāt fill his head and it was left to ponder. Ā For a long time his world had been too silent, the quiet was violent. Ā Now the noise was back. Ā So loud and clear and he could breathe. Ā He took one slow deep inhale that hurt,
āDo you notā¦? Do you not get it?ā Brows knit together as his voice strained out his throat, attempting to both let him speak but yet also choke back for just a little while longer what he couldnāt control. Ā Confused and incredulous he could only barely get out, āYou left.ā
āYou left me.ā
āYou, Liz. Ā You did that. Ā You ran away.ā
At any time she couldāve taken off, even clear across the world and he never wouldāve stopped her because heād known -he thought- she would tell him. Ā He was worth at least that much. Ā Apparently that actual worth was very little.
Sporadic trips where he waited a good twenty-four hours before seeing if heād at least get a text whenever sheād suddenly remembered what heād be doing home alone, Leo could handle those. Ā Several times heād handled them because she came back home and sheād never done a thing to feed any sort of real doubt inside of him. Ā Until one day she was gone and he didnāt hear for months. Ā Their home the apartment got quieter and the silence almost killed him. Ā She left spaces and promises and intentions and plans and him. Ā Sheād cut out along the lines exactly where and what she wanted to take with her. Leo hadnāt made the cut to be inside those lines. Ā Only on the side heād just been left bleeding.
āWhatever family I was to you wasnāt enough for you to tell me when or why you left. Ā Back then it wasnāt enough. Now youāre trying to get it back as if itās all just sitting here right in front of you!ā His hands slammed on the table and spilled cold coffee as he stood up, voice barking out of him now trying to bite and scratch at her. Ā āBut itās gone, I want it but we donāt get to have it back. Ā You threw it away, we canāt pick it up again that easily.ā
In the past few days together he could see slips of it, little moments that could be reminiscent or copies of what used to be but nothing full or substantial. Ā Even that night in bed where he tried to reach for it, search for it in a clear desperation under that skin he used to know intimately well but now fit on her differently.
āBelieve me I can tell when Iām not wanted -- when Iām not enough. Ā Itās not a new feeling. So when I understood that part - when I could accept it - then you started to send me all this shit. And I just--.. godamnit.ā All the emails that were just as short and clipped as her voice was he could hear it through the screen, and all the pictures of a her with a child that was so real yet alien to him. Ā Sheād tried to leave a little space open for Leo, between the pictures and words, somewhere she thought he could fit because of how easily itād been forgotten that she carved out that space personally.
āThis isnāt about how much bullshit we can shove down each otherās throats till we give in. Ā Thatās what we used to do. That used to be us.ā
āWhat you did wasnāt bullshit.ā Slit open and draining Leo felt his voice had become a little lower and the bite of his words was going duller. Ā Everything that had come out, that was coming out, ripped and pulled him from the inside out he could swear his mouth tasted of wet copper.
āYou left for you. Ā I get it. Ā A life happened and you were just trying. Ā I donāt blame you for that. Ā Youāre a grown ass woman you can do whatever the fuck you want.ā He threw her words back at her across the room with all of the little malice that was left in him. Ā Leaving a deafening silence that started to swallow him back up.
āJust donāt act like whatever I meant to you was more than it was, because that is actually killing m-ā
When the last word couldnāt come out stronger than a whisper Leo stopped. Ā Pushing himself away from the table, hands drug across a dull wooden surface thatād drained almost every speck of energy from him. Ā Leaving it all the table as heād just done in front of her before turning to the kitchen door.
firecracker-lizzyy:
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā There were still elements about the two of them that Liz was desperate to get back to normal, like the way they used to pick on each other or the shots they used to call, even down to the way they used to act around each other while occupying the same space. Because if there was anyone that she owed thanks to in her overall survival and core of who she had become as a person on her own, it would be Leo. On her escape to New York City all those years ago⦠heād taken a chance on a total stranger, and in some ways, it had literally saved her life. The way sheād abandoned him ā and she had, she knew this now, she felt it under the pressure of his hands the other night, like a punishing reminder ā it was probably one of the worse things sheād done in her life. But she was still having trouble admitting it.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Noting his tone, Liz foresaw the direction this was going and quickly decided to pull the plug with her own shrug of dismissal. Heād showed up, sheād let him come in. She wasnāt sure what else she was meant to do here to make this all right again. āYeah, well⦠I guess I have. Thatās generally what people do when they move.ā
Just like that all her effort was gone. Ā Rolled off in an easy shrug of that let her dispel everything in the room that she didnāt want to deal with and she dismissed him that easily. It shouldnāt hurt anymore like it did yet that dull but still very real sting across still healing ribs caused his fingers to clench and tear a page. She didnāt want to deal with it. Ā With him; not if it wasnāt the way she wanted or a way she recognized. Ā
So then why?
āI get trying to find a home, for yourself.ā Setting his now ruined book down Leo put a noticeable amount of effort into that small of an action, because it took away some of the tremble in his hand. Ā Unlocked a little of the tension up his jaw to let his words come out not as clipped. āBeen hopping around for awhile, so Iām glad if you found it. Ā If this is it.ā Her new home pit stop.
āWhat I donāt get is why Iām here. Why you let me come.ā
firecracker-lizzyy:
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā The air was tense, it had been over the stretch of the last few days and Liz wouldnāt admit it, but she wasnāt exactly doing much to ease it. Having Leo back in her life, close enough to reach out and pinch, it was surreal. After all these years⦠āYou know,ā She began, āItās not like this townās Satanās asshole or anything, itās actually kind of cool once you get over the fact everybodyās annoyingly nice all the time.ā She told him. āI mean like, I donāt know what your plans are or whatever, if youāre staying or going back but like⦠itās not that shit here. I know itās no shared shoebox on Sixth Avenue, but itās home.ā
From his cup of weak coffee growing colder by the minutes he didnāt actually drink it and the fanned out paperback book thatās spine was deforming the longer he kept it on the same page, Leo only glanced up to Liz. Ā Sparing her a minute of time away from the sentences he was both memorizing and muddling to the point he knew each word before it came but also couldnāt recall what the book was about. Ā It was the same book heād been reading every morning for the past week. Ā Pretending to read the same two fucking pages because every morning she continued to pretend several things didnāt exist and that small talk was the same as it had been several years ago. Ā He didnāt even know if they had small talk between them anymore but itās all sheād been doing. Ā Been trying to do. Ā And it mustāve been that painfully clear effort she was putting into it that got just a little further under Leoās skin this morning. Bitter about when and where she decided to really try. āYeah, you settled in great here.ā

[Liz ā Leo]
Liz: Brick, pole, tacomobile, you name it.
Liz: Yeah, we're watching TV.
Liz: He knows an awful lot about Sex and the City...
Leo: Tacomobile is news to me, since you're the walking taco, not me
Leo: And that is unsurprising to me
[Liz ā Leo]
Liz: I don't know who you think I am but I will never turn down free food you know that's my number one rule; free shit is good shit.
Liz: He's still here. He wants to know when you'll get back.
Leo: You never listen to me
Leo: Why do you never listen to me. I am just a brick wall in your life aren't I. Or a pole. Just an inanimate object.
Leo: STDs are free, that still good shit?
Leo: Wait, he's in the apartment?
[Liz ā Leo]
Liz: Your creepy neighbor came over again.
Liz: He wants to know when you'll be home.
Liz: PS if you wont bang him I will.
Leo: You don't want any of that, trust me
Leo: Stay inside, lock the door
Leo: Don't open even if he has take out.
Sink Your Teeth | Thatcher + Leo
"So⦠Iāll take that as a yes."
"...that's a I don't want pity take-out from a guy I had a drunken mistake with." Ā There were levels of weird Leo wasn't up for crossing tonight-- if ever. Ā Definitely ever.
Sink Your Teeth | Thatcher + Leo
Thatcher watched him move with a small smirk. He was anything but honest. āSo is that a yes on dinner?ā
"Thanks but I'm not exactly a fan of pity favors." Leo remarked while looking over the titles held in the last box he carried back over.

Actually it has, a patient died in the hospital the other day, terminal cancer and well, one of the interns was taking him down to the morgue. Iām not sure what possessed him to run down the hall with the gatch bed, but he hit the double door. Both him and the course flew right into it before falling down. Stupid intern was on top of the bed body. So to answer your question, yes a corpse can definitely make a sound like that.Ā
....I'm a bit speechless from that. Ā And nauseated thinking of the sound of a body hitting the ground. Ā I take it you work at a hospital then?
You might have trouble finding that hereā but Iām pretty sure there are a lot of other bars that would love to have you. Thereās a nightclub in North End that Iām dying to go to, you should join me some night. Bitterness is not bad when you can balance it out once in a while.
Ah, okay, I see why that would make it a bit of a āmixed situationāā I hope everything worked out though.
It'll be a nice change to get served the drinks and not have to worry about fucking them up. Ā Been a while since I've been at a nightclub but I'm definitely up for it, this calm place turned me into a bit of a hermit.
It's getting there I think, thanks
Itās nice to meet you, considering youāre helping me out majorly right now.
I work as a paramedic, so depending on the type of scene I rush into things can get heated when emotions run high.
Paramedic? Bet that's exciting, do you enjoy that kind of adrenaline?
Yeahā¦my brotherā¦he sort of broke into my apartment and just instigated this war against my psyche. Out of all the people to show up here, it fucking had to be Thatcher. Ah youāve got a good point there, Gus could probably make a run for it too, heās pretty quick.
He didn't hurt you did he? Just make some threats? Sounds like a psycho--Thatcher? Not a very common name... Did he show up not too long ago?
Box To The Left... // Gus & Leo
Augusten was exhausted, he had hardly slept in days and when he did it had been short naps beneath his desk at work rather than on the lumpy bed in the Motel 6 he had called home as of late. He looked exhausted, he hadnāt shaved, his eyes had lost their usual brightness and now looked vacant, his body was in his apartment but his mind was elsewhere.
He snapped out of his thought flooded daze when he heard the door opening and his heart skipped a beat. What would he say to her? What would she say to him? How did she look? Was she happy? Was she as trodden down as he? He felt his stomach flip inside of him as his mind raced, anticipating her appearance. He furrowed his brows when he heard footsteps heavier than those of Liz, he put down the shirt he had been folding and wandered into the living room to see who had arrived.
"Oh" he said, recognizing Leoās figure immediately. "She sent you, huh?" he said and sniffed back softly, tearing his eyes away from Leo and staring awkwardly at the ground to avoid his gaze. It figured that Liz would run to Leo, it made Augusten feel a bitterness toward the man "Guess everythingās as it should be, then. Back to the way it was." he commented, thinking out loud and seemingly a little out of context as he followed his own train of thought.
Leo thought he'd feel more at war or conflicted seeing Gus. Ā Torn with an instinct to seethe at the man that made Liz cry and putting her in pieces that she half dragged to his door. Ā Shouldn't he hate Gus for it? Regardless of where the wrongs lied. Ā Hell he'd beaten the shit out of Liz's ex when they'd just met. Ā All he felt was a pity to see how equally broken both parts of the once pair mirrored each other. The man looked miserable. Ā Not to mention the heavy disappoint on Gus's face when it was clear someone else was wanted to be the one walking in.
"She didn't send me, she doesn't know I came. Ā Just thought it'd be easier if I came for the rest of her things." Leo said and started to look around for anything recognizable as her's. Ā He was trying to keep words few because nothing should come from this meeting. Ā He wasn't here to fix things, that wasn't even a task close to his reach. Ā Gus was in pain just like Liz and even if she was first in many things, Leo still liked him. Ā Coming in here and making any threats or demands to talk things out weren't his to do. Ā That didn't stop the tick in Leo's chin at the last comment though. Ā Gus was hurting, Leo didn't expect him to act the usual self. Ā So he kept his mouth a grim line.

Box To The Left... // Gus & Leo
On his way to Liz's now old apartment Leo was possibly the worst driver on the street. Ā Speeding along with constant checks to his cellphone and there must be luck on his side, for that rare occasion, that allowed him to arrive in one piece. Ā Out of his car and slamming the door he made sure his car was locked in this shit of a neighborhood. Ā The one bleak good thing he could see out of this break up? Liz didn't have to live here anymore. Ā When she arrived at his door last thing on her mind was probably him noticing the one bag she came with. Ā She may never had owned a lot all on her own, but it was definitely more than that. Ā And damnit it was all back at 'their' place. Ā So here he stood, pulling out the key he'd snatched on the way out, another thing Liz probably didn't notice. Ā In the current state though she looked broken enough that if bleeding out she may just sit there and wait it out. Ā Did he want to leave her that way? Fuck no. Ā But the sooner he got all of her stuff the sooner she'd have one very small thing not on her mind. Ā He couldn't do pep talks or emotional baggage, that's what a pleading text had been sent for. Ā He could do this though. Ā He could get her stuff and that's what he planned for when opening the still shit looking door. Ā
Iām really glad to hear thatā Iāll keep my fingers crossed that things stay on the quiet side then, itās nice to have you around again.
Ah, yes, that has to be the bitter New Yorker in youā before you know it youāll be sunshine and rainbows and loving all the kindness here. A mixed situation? Didnāt you say you found the person you were looking for?
We'll see if we can find another gay sports bar to hit up for a good night. Ā Unless you think you can settle with a regular boring one. Ā AndĀ I was bitter before New York, I just fit in better there.
I did, after she left without a word or notice really. Ā There was a month or two debate if I was going to find her or not. Ā But here I am.
