Promise me you’ll survive. That you won’t give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise.
I promise.
Titanic (1997) dir. James Cameron
This motif plays in two parts of the film. Once when Rose is boarding the Titanic and in a V.O. she says, “To me it was a slave ship taking me back into America in chains. Outwardly I was everything a well brought up girl should be. Inside I was screaming.” Second, when she is on the Carpathia and discovers the Heart of the Ocean in her coat pocket, to then tossing it over the Keldysh. The juxtaposition of these two scenes is obvious when staring at them side by side. At closer look, James Horner purposefully connected these two scenes by using this motif to truly capture the transformation Rose has made over the course of the film.
The motif itself is meant to exude grandeur, both of the ship and of the life Rose can lead by marrying Cal. When she discovers the diamond it plays again because the opportunity to live comfortably in wealth is before her again. What’s amazing is that the second time this motif plays, she drops the Heart of the Ocean into the water, thus rejecting the life she was originally meant to lead. What happens now is pure movie music magic. This motif transitions into another motif. It transitions into Rose’s theme, which is the music played when Rose is living the life she wants for herself. The film takes us on an emotional tour of her bedside photos, which confirm that she kept her promise to Jack, and to herself.

“More light and light, more dark and dark our woes.” Romeo + Juliet (1996) dir. Baz Luhrmann
Rose, you’re no picnic, all right? You’re a spoiled little brat, even, but under that, you’re the most amazingly, astounding, wonderful woman that I’ve ever known.
