California fits every single criteria for NPD incredibly well, and I think it’s an astronomically interesting thing, what hes meant to parody considered. I’ll over each trait and how he fits them exactly just to cover my bases under the cut.
1. A grandiose logic of self importance.
To some extent, as a state, California is very important and i absolutely understand that. On a political ledge, is where I believe this mostly applies. He is constantly placing himself as much more important than the other states, even other blue states. What comes to mind is in the statehouse episode where him and Oregon (? I can’t recall off the top of my head, oddly) were trying to get Texas to vote blue & how he acted towards the other state.
2. A credence that he is extraordinary and exceptional and can only be understood by, or should connect with, other extraordinary/important individuals/institutions
This one is very easy to see, he constantly looks down upon basically every state, even those who are TRYING to be his friend actively. I.E. when Kentucky invited him to the horse race after he complains about having no friends & he quickly turns him down with an "ew no!" kind of mentality.
3. A desire for unwarranted admiration
This one is very similar to the reasoning above, he immediately goes "woe is me!" about his lack of friends, despite the fact he actively turns away anyone who /could/ be his friend.
4. A display of conceited or egotistical behaviors
This is basically his entire character, EVERYTHING he does is conceited or egotistical, California does not have morals, but he masquerades as someone who does so he can feel good about himself. Every time he fights for a "cause" hes really fighting to make himself feel better than everyone else.
5. A sense of entitlement
Once again, this one is fairly obvious. Through a lot of the series we see him feeling entitled to praise/attention/admiration from other people for what is really the bare minimum when it comes to treating his people fairly.
6. Resentment of others or a conviction others are resentful of him.
"His woe is me, everyone hates me!" Mindset coexisting with his "I am better than everyone else mindset" is also why this applies to him.
There is a lot more of a detailed rant i could write about this, especially since i havent outlined this at all ; i wanted to throw my thoughts into a void.
