My new CI fav! Ask for Steve the bartender. (at Paul's Daughter)
Funnily enough I wrote this email two years ago, almost to the day and saved it in my drafts. Two years later, I am about to embark on the same journey. Â I thought I would share my thoughts from this note I created for some of my best friends and family and a nyc experience I had in the east village from 2010.. Maybe it will brighten the road ahead for some of you.Â
As I get ready to move into a new space I wonder "what is my check list to happiness?" What am I setting out to find? Â More space? More freedom to do arts and crafts? To entertain? Â To be "an adult" and purchase adult furniture? What type of space will I feel comfortable to grow and develop - as I have now expounded upon these "important years of my 30's." We must find the perfect apartment to begin life, right?!?Â
I met this nice man Sunday evening. His name is Anthony Pisano. He is my neighbor — kind of. He lives on 7th between 1st and Ave A.  I passed by on my way home earlier this evening as he had John Coltrane playing out the front door and I stopped to survey the situation, peaking inside, but not actually entering, until he emerged from the shadows and greeted me with a healthy, welcoming smile and peaceful soul.  He said, jovially, "Well hello there,"  then he said. He held out his hand. I obliged and welcomed his handshake. I looked him in the eye as he complimented my handshake, "You must have gotten that from your father." he said with a smile.  I said, "Thank you sir." I will tell him.  We chatted. I asked if this was a jazz bar or his apartment?  He said, "Please you are welcome to investigate yourself..."  my first instinct (to decline and walk away-this is ny you know!) was disengaged by his insistence to remain outside while I browsed the premise.  He repeated I will be out here and he pointed again and encouraged me with his trusting eye's. I accepted and stepped into his apartment. The nicknacks and chachki's — you wouldn't believe his collection if I told you. Not distasteful at all — like a well preserved music hall of fame and antique shop. Tony's apartment is a storefront and he has been there for 32 years and here is the kicker - he has never sold a thing (he told me that before I left giggling).  He used to rent the cafe next door and the apartment above — he told me.  "But I didn't need them anymore..."  (the article says the same)! Â
Pisano has played music (Jazz) with the "best of the them…" raised his family there and now lives alone insisting that he's there to greet passers-by.  He has a piano in his 8x8 kitchen, behind his twin bed in his 4x6 living space and on the other-side (of the piano) is an iron stove and fairly small but decadent kitchen complete with chopping block a kitchen table for one and hefty pots and pans assorted on the wall.  I could smell the italian food he just made for dinner.  It was a great ny experience.  I looked through his pictures of him when he was a young pop jazz artist, playing with John Coltrane. I stepped back out onto his front stoop and asked him about it.  Pisano responded with,  "That wasn't my greatest accomplishment — it's those over there"  pictures of him and his family on the stoop, hanging out. Â
I stepped out again (on the stoop) and he said, "What a lovely voice, young lady, do you sing?"  I said, "I love to sing, but not in front of people." He said, "Oh, why not?"  I said, "I am too shy." I admitted my attempts of becoming a blues singer in college and he greeted that with an immediate and reassuring, "Well, you have got to try again!" Tony asked, "Can you read music?"  I said "Yes, but I'm a bit rusty". He said, "Do you have a piano?"  I said, "No sir."  He responded, "You do now!"  as he pointed to his kitchen.  I told him, "Oh thank you so much, but I couldn't bother…"  he continued to tell me a story of this german couple that stopped by recently — the lady's father used to be a painter and has no desire to paint any longer.  He went into his storefront apartment and brought her a tiny paint brush, handed it to her and said, "Give this to him. Tell him to draw a line or a circle and seeÂ
what happens." Â The women called him when she returned to Germany and said that her father drew the circle and smiled."
Sorry I didn't proofread this all that much, it's late so I apologize for the grammatical errors and the potential overuse of quotes — however, it was a moment of inspiration in my neighborhood, in the East village.  A man that lives his life for the arts and music, is happy within his means, in a humble space he calls his home and wants to encourage others to experience the greatest gifts of all-their inner artist... (regardless of how decadent or modest their lives are)Â
"let the music play."
Facebook has finally allowed the residents of the Irish town of Effin to list the place as their hometown, after months of blocking it for being "offensive".
A special tea table for a girl
I received a skype call from my 3 yr old niece, Soren - in New Zealand. She was SO excited to show me her "magic room" that her parents and brother put together for her 3rd birthday; transforming this space from their kitchen nook. The magic room was complete with a magic curtain door. Inside the room included a rocking horse, a child size stove and cupboard, a beautiful Indonesian tiled table with this beautiful painting of people in the 1800's meeting in town, bright magic cushion chairs and two child size head chairs as well as a netted basket for her dolls and toys to lay when they weren't having tea.Â
It wasn't the skype call that moved me, it wasn't JUST the beautiful mosaic indonedian painted table that was so inspiring.. it was the fact that I got to sit with Soren at her level, even if I was only on the computer as she poured me some "tea" from her saki set. As Soren handed the saki cup towards the computer, gesturing for me to take the cup.. I kindly and politely accepted it on the other side (of the world) and gently "sipped" commenting on how delicious the tea was; her whole mouth opened up into a grin and she slouched in delight.. in that instant we were connected once again on two separate ends of the world.
My brother and sister in-law (two kids raised in the suburbs of Chicago) live on an island off the coast of Auckland called Waiheke. The island is filled with 10 beautiful beaches and 25 vineyards. This is their playground. Their home is adorable but humble in size per middle America standards however on the other hand quite roomy if they lived in NYC. Regardless, to give a child their own space to be creative is a true gift even if they manufacture it from the unconventional - a kitchen nook. I commend them for living their dreams and creating space for their children (and others as my sister-in-law, Debra Wallace, has taken the reigns on building/creating a community learning center for children with limited resources). I commend all parents/role models/teachers etc that take the time to give children their own space to create. This magic room will impact Soren's creative development, her interests, her imagination and curiosity forever. Even though I can' t be there with her at her special table, I was blessed to have a peak inside what's to come.. even for a moment.
I have an assignment to design a garment inspired by Sleeping Beauty. Â Oh the lessons Disney tried to teach us.. Â The colors, the silhouettes, the music and the sounds (voice-overs).. Â I think Disney and the late 50's/early 60's had a greater influence than I thought on my design ideas and aesthetic.. To be honest I totally forgot what the movie was all about; what a treat to revisit such memories...

Meeting the new neighbors
Now that I have moved to Bensonhurst, Brooklyn..  after commuting the last few days I realized I live in a real neighborhood with really down to earth people. I feel like they have been here for years! I met some last night.. they didn't invite me in for tea, but I could feel the community and the welcome  -especially from the older gentleman on the lawn. He's the silent type, but his smile says it all. I think we will be friends.Â
Something like this...

In honor of international pirate day and to get some inspiration to design some amazing pirate pants here is Jack Johnson's cover of a Pirate Looks at Forty. Design goal this week - A little punk, a splash of couture and little innovation - we are going to make it work (with a twist of eco-friendly) Arrrgh! Â
9.11.11 moments on the high-line. The project: "Imperfect Beauty." Â The act of touch was my "Imperfect Beauty," Every day we have choices... to hate, to hurt, to be selfish, to understand, to unite, to bond, to love. To touch, to grasp, to connect is a symbol of imperfect beauty - so easy yet so vulnerable it could change at any moment. When I asked for volunteers for my project it was nice to see the results that day and thankfully MANY people obliged to help me out. Â So I owe a big THANK YOU to all the New Yorkers, in love, with all your glory, for choosing love on 9.11.11 and many (hopefully most) days throughout the year - not just for yourselves, but for each other! Â I had over 60 couples, parents, families and friends do me the honor of stopping for a few seconds to listen to my "plot" and allow me to take their photo. Thank you all for allowing me to capture that!!! Unfortunately tumblr won't allow me to post all my photo's but the project will be coming out soon. In the mean time - here are some of my favorites!! Lots of Love NYC! LLF xxÂ

The Beatles said it best.. "All you need is Love.." Â
Craigslist Scam Artists Out of Control with God fearing requirements. Just send payment via mail and I promise to send you the keys!
I know I know.. a craigslist complaint? Â Usually I get the response from my friends of ugh.. don't you ever learn? In reality, in eight years - Craigslist has brought me several great apt's and some of my best friends/nyc family members from those experiences.. Everytime I go apt hunting (which is a lot in the past year) I try and follow a simple rule on C.L. when looking for apts, when it's too good to be true - it 99% of the time IS! Â This time around - for whatever reason, I have attracted three different scam artists (or maybe one is the same) on Craigslist. I always laugh when I get a response that says - "thank you for your interest in my apt. My wife and I have moved to Africa for missionary work. We are looking for a GOD fearing candidate (as if to say - please judge yourself first before answering this ad.. that screams trust me). Then give me all your information and send me money so I can send you keys" - haha right.Â
Out of frustration of getting three different emails (but very similar responses to my interest in not too under the market deals.. I have decided to post one of them to 1. laugh with others. 2. Fight back against fraudulent missionary ministers that try to use god to lure people into hopeful situations. UGH! PS I think of myself as a good "reformed" Christian (which usually means... I drink. I LIVE in NYC. I sleep with my boyfriend and I don't take crap from anyone - even those who call themselves a man or woman of god. Â So folks.. here is your chuckle and warning for today.. Â
