i feel like rivalshipping would work in canon because yugi is naturally the next best thing after atem, not solely because of their nearly identical appearances but because yugi’s attitude and personality by dsod is much more stronger and emotionally in tact compared to when they had initially met, which i’m sure kaiba would grow especially fond of after bonding for a while past simply dueling; also takahashi’s art of the both of them testing out games with each other also furthers the possibility of it playing out…it’d be a slow burn but one that eventually finds itself after a few revelations of “crap, this guy is really interesting after all…”
