Why is there a diarrhea parasite outbreak in America?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies cut funding to disease prevention and control.
Why is measles back in America?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies, including RFK Jr, cut vaccine and measles prevention funding and programs.
Why is the New World Screwworm infecting cattle in Texas, when it had previously been eliminated from the area?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies, including Elon Musk, cut USAID funding, which in part worked to monitor and prevent screwworm outbreaks.
Why was there a flu outbreak in our armed forces?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies, including Pete Hegseth, cut vaccination requirements for our armed forces, putting all of them at risk alongside our military readiness.
What contributed to the Covid outbreak?
Donald Trump and his Republican allies cut funding to a pandemic prevention program in his first term because Barack Obama had created it.
āAmerica firstā sends its regards. Trump voters, please learn your lesson. And if you donāt, itāll be taught to you again with yet another diarrhea outbreak.

This is why Pride is not just a party. It's a joyful celebration, but it's also a pointed and colourful two-finger salute to a world that stood back whilst so many of us died. And we'll never go quietly, never again.

literally a cartoon bad guy
āspicy pillowā jokes aside, I think @flowerkroneāās tags deserve a serious reply:
#my old phone looks like this on my shelf lmao #im too scared to touch it to throw it away #idk what trash this even goes into when its at this point
The pillow-shaped object here used to be the phoneās battery. Itās not a battery anymore. Now itās a balloon full of corrosive, pyrophoric chemicals and hydrogen gas and itās one puncture away from burning your house down. I am 100% serious. You should be scared to touch it.
But you gotta touch it, because you gotta get it out of your house before the pressure builds up to the point where the balloon pops. This isnāt going to happen soon ā there is no need to panic ā but it will happen eventually.
And, indeed, it doesnāt go in the ordinary trash. You put this in the ordinary trash and youāre gonna set the garbage truck on fire. Donāt do that to the garbage collectors, their job is hard enough already.
The first thing you need to do is get a fireproof container. The most common household item that qualifies as a fireproof container is a cast-iron cookpot with a cast-iron lid ā often sold as a āDutch oven.ā Any other cooking container thatās unreactive, has a very high melting point, and has a lid made of the same materials will also work: enameled or stainless steel, Pyrex with glass lid, etc.
However: Do not use a pot with a PTFE-based non-stick coating. If the battery does explode, the fire will probably be hot enough to degrade a PTFE coating, producing toxic smoke. (Not that you should breathe the smoke from the battery fire either, but PTFE breakdown products are worse.) Do not use a pot made of aluminium or copper. The fire might even get hot enough to melt those.
Whatever container you use, you might have to throw away along with the phone, so donāt use your good Dutch oven for this. Go to a thrift store and buy a cheap one.
Once you have the fireproof container:
Gently pick up the phone and put it in the fireproof container. If possible, gently tape the phone to the bottom of the container to prevent it from bouncing around. Donāt put any padding in there, thatāll just make a fire worse if it does happen. Put the lid on and tape it shut.
Put a label on the container, something like āDEFECTIVE LI-ION BATTERY ā FIRE HAZARDā.
It is now reasonably safe to move the container around. However, if the battery does explode, the container is very likely to leak smoke and get hot, so keep it in a well-ventilated area and away from things that will be damaged by heat. Donāt leave it exposed to the weather, either.
You need toĀ find either a hazardous waste disposal site, or an e-waste recycler that will accept defective Li-ion batteries. I canāt help with that because I have no idea where you live.
However, your local fire department, if you have one, will probably be happy to help. Call their non-emergency number. Nothing is on fire yet, so this isnāt an emergency, but things that can easily start a fire are still within the fire departmentās responsibilities. Tell them you have a phone with a bulging lithium-ion battery, you put it in a fireproof container, and you want to know how to dispose of it safely.
If the fire department tries to tell you this isnāt dangerous or itās okay to throw it out in the regular trash (with or without fireproof container), hang up on them and write a cranky letter to your local government representatives, then keep looking for a proper disposal site.
When you do find a a hazardous waste disposal site or an e-waste recycler, call them and make sure they will take defective Li-ion batteries, before showing up. Thatās also a good time to ask if they will let you have the fireproof container back.

Reblogging because I would have had absolutely no idea what to do, either.
Dude... allow me to add to your trove.
I have a folder of these on my phone... I'm not sure what that says about me!
If I could tolerate having clips in my hair I'd dye it blue again and put these in everyday

i feel so bad for nikola tesla like imagine spending years beefing with a guy who has conned the public into believing he's some sort of supergenius when in reality it's his overworked employees developing all of his world-changing inventions and you end up dying broke and starving and alone and then 100 years later another guy cons the public into believing he's some sort of supergenius when in reality it's his overworked employees developing all of his world-changing inventions and he's doing it all IN YOUR NAME. he must be rolling in his grave like a fucking rotisserie chicken
His ghost is setting those cars on fire actually
I hadnāt really consideredĀ āthe agnostic demigod of electromagnetism is the reason Muskās companies failā before, but I like the concept.Ā
Going to see children and adolescents dance badly, play ball badly, sing badly, play recorder badly because they are young: YES! YOU ARE LEARNING! INCREDIBLE!
People are so rude about going to watch the children in their lives do stuff shittily. āUgh toddler dance recital,ā āugh tee-ball weekend again,ā āugh nativity play.ā
That guy learned what skipping is this year and now heās playing the piano the worst Iāve ever seen but the best heās ever done! ARENāT YOU CAPTIVATED BY THEIR ABILITY TO DO A LITTLE BIT WHEN PREVIOUSLY THEY COULD DO NOTHING? Be filled with wonder and joy!
PEER REVIEWED
Went to my little cousinās first band concert recently, in which she had a trumpet solo. After playing it, she looked over at where we were all sitting and looked so pleased and proud of herself. I want to remember that moment for the rest of my life.
Btw if you're in North America, planting squash even if you don't like to eat it provides a vital food source for squash bees, which collect pollen exclusively from (you guessed it) squash flowers. And if you DO like to eat it, then you're getting food for yourself while also providing food for a very specialized native animal :)
Watch out for cucurbitacin toxicity if you plan on replanting your own naturally pollinated seeds, though! Pretty much all squashes can hybridize with all other squashes, and wild squash is inedible and highly toxic, and if you're in North America there is a decent chance that any squash you grow may get pollinated by bugs that are also feeding from wild squash. Fruit from first generation pollination (taking domesticated squash and pollinating it with wild squash) will always be safe, but the ones you plant from the seeds of that same squash MAY have high levels of cucurbitacin, which can be fatal in severe cases. The good news is that cucurbitacin is incredibly easy to detect - if you're eating a second-generation squash from a plant that MAY have been pollinated via a wild plant in the past and it tastes unusually bitter, that means cucurbitacin levels will be high, and you won't want to consume large quantities of it.

This is about Sci-Hub. yeah we get it.. gatekeep knowledge and protect the interests of capitalā¦
Listen, this is serious.
Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!
It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.
Like, itās literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.
So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?
Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.
Oh, and while weāre talking about books, if youāve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely donāt go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately theyāre completely free.
Reblogging so you know which sites to totally avoid
Another inside tip from academia: Those papers in really expensive journals that are effectively inaccessible to anyone not in a university network? Depending on the discipline itās very likely that same paper is on a āpreprintā server somewhere, with no access restrictions.
Like if you want to read basically any physics, math, or CS paper, arXiv.org will have you covered, because everyone uploads their papers there before submitting to a journal (and generally updates it after peer review). I know all of my papers are on there. This is such common practice that journals have it baked into their licensing agreements that authors retain the right to upload their work to these places.
So the next time you get hit with that paywall, you may not even need sci-hub, just click the arxiv link on google scholar instead.
if for some reason none of this works, the old āsend a email nicely asking for the paper to the authorā is always a good trick. remember most scientists hate the commercialisation of scientific knowledge
Donāt mind me, just gotta share this with my bf so that he knows what websites to avoid
Many authors of papers are on ResearchGate! You can ask for papers there, if they donāt just post a copy to download. If theyāre associated with a college, you can usually find their email addresses in the department directory, also.
Always reblog.
Marginalia on my jacket! This was such an impulse project but Iām very pleased with how it turned out!
