Breathe in. Breathe out. He wasn’t sure that he remembered how to do that. His heart felt like it was shattered into a million pieces. Every time he tried to remember how to function, he broke again. He wasn’t even sure that he could stay strong for the girls right now, when they needed him the most.
It had been so simple. An accident. And now.. Rayna, was gone. In a split second, he lost her. The girls, lost their mother. He wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do now, with the hole left behind. He just knew, that he had to remember how to breathe.
He should have called Aria. He should have called to let her know what had happened. She had a gallery showing, and he didn’t want to disturb her. She knew about Hockney, and his stalking of Rayna, but the last couple of days, she didn’t know. She didn’t know about the accident, and Rayna and.. he should have called her.
Aria, meant the world to him. And after their incredible night at the awards show, he knew that he could easily fall in love with her. A thought he hadn’t had in a very long time. But she was a part of his life, and he treasured her so much. He should have called her.
His heart broke, as he sat in the room he had once shared with Rayna. The time they spent here, just talking and writing music. All of it, just a memory now. He had grabbed a favorite picture of them, when he left the house. He couldn’t be there anymore, and he knew that Teddy, had the girls right now. He needed time alone, to process all of this.
As he lay in his own bed, curled up on his side, he wasn’t even fighting the emotions anymore. He was tired of not crying. Of hiding all of this, behind a semi-brave face. But it was hearing Aria’s voice, that finally broke him. And as she wrapped her arms around him, he couldn’t hold anything back anymore. Burying his head against his shoulder, he said nothing, as he cried.
She released a breath as he buried his head against her shoulder. She held him as tightly as she could and allowed him to cry against her. She could only imagine the pain that he was in. She pressed a few kisses to the top of his head as one hand moved to rub circles along his back. There was nothing that she could do that would make things perfect for him, again.
She couldn’t resurrect Rayna nor take them all to a happier time and she desperately wanted to because she loved the man. It was irrational of her to love someone who was still so obviously in love with another woman and now a ghost at that. But, she hadn’t been able to stop herself from falling for his charms, the smiles that he reserved for her, and the way her name fell from his lips in that casual sort of way.
“I’m so sorry.” And she was sorry because she adored the very ground that Rayna had walked on. They had been friends and she’d loved her music and the kids. “I’m so very sorry.” She pressed another kiss to the top of his head. She felt tears welling in her own eyes. “God, I’m sorry.” And her own voice broke because she was silently questioning what sort of a deity would allow this amount of suffering.
