I've found the SBS Japanese-Australian news good for listening practice - the presenters speak clearly and I can slow the audio down a little playing it through Google Podcasts, then read the article in English afterwards.

This is another game that lets you play with English text and the original Japanese audio.

I've just started playing it on the Switch, I'll use this post to keep track of words I recognise as I play.

Thoughts:

So far I'm really enjoying the game. It's quite sweet and beautiful - you can really see the Studio Ghibli influence in the artwork. It's a little less ideal for language listening practice compared to other JRPGs like Bravely Default and Xenoblade - there are cut scenes with audio but most of the small talk doesn't include audio so there's a lot less repetition. Town names and character names are also quite different between the Japanese audio and English captions which can be a little confusing at first.

Still, it's a beautiful game and I'm looking forward to playing more of it.

Here is a Japanese video advertising a sushi press to make futomaki. I just make mine with a regular sushi mat, but this video made for some quick Japanese listening practice.

Some words from the video:

おきます (おく) - put/place. Conjugated it sounds like sleep (おきます / おきる) which confused me at first.

できます(できる) - to be able

らくらく - easily

Dakuten and half-dakuten

I've been using hiragana, katakana and dakuten for a while now. I knew dakuten was the mark that changed the pronunciation of kana like さ to ざ, た to だ, etc, but I didn't know anything else about them.

Until I read this article about rendaku. It's a good read, explains why Hira + Kana = HiraGana.

It turns out dakuten change the syllable from unvoiced to voiced. Basically it's all about the way you use your larynx. Handakuten are halfway, partially voiced. Changing an unvoiced syllable to a voiced one on a Japanese word often indicates it's the second half of a joined word, rather than a seperate word - although this doesn't apply everywhere.

Hiragana and Katakana

ひら - plain, ordinary, common

かな - Kana, Japanese syllabary

ひらがな - Hiragana.

かた~ - part of a pair, incomplete, fragmentary

Dakuten, rendaku, etc

Okonomiyaki is a savoury Japanese pancake made with meat, seafood or vegetables.

I used to buy okonomiyaki locally, but they aren't made anymore, so I've been looking at some recipes.

レシピ / recipes

The first is a recipe for authentic okonomiyaki, with lots of information on the different styles you can find in Japan. I think it sounds amazing, but I'll have trouble finding ingredients for this. I've seen white yams (ナガイモ) at a local Asian grocer but they mostly stock Chinese and Korean ingredients, so I don't think I'll find the rest!

This second recipe is a simpler version, I think if I use this recipe but with yam rather than sweet potato and add a little kimchi it will be very close to the okonomiyaki I used to buy.

Xenoblade Chronicles allows you to play in English, with the original Japanese audio - perfect for some casual Japanese listening practice. The characters in this game talk almost non-stop and there's a mix of captioned cut scenes and uncaptioned small talk.

I have been learning Japanese for a few months now - I've learnt hiragana, katakana, about 200 kanji and have a decent starter vocabulary, but my understanding of conjugations and grammar is very limited for now.

This is the Japanese I learned to recognise from my first play-through of Xenoblade (on the Switch). I'd like to play it again in a couple of years and see how much more I can work out.
