My classic twined English Ivy berry basket.
Because, why not? I made a mini fabric liner for my mini basket. #basket #basketry #basketweaving #shaker #Shakerbasket #sewing #crafting #ashbasket #blackash #brownash #singer #sewingmachine #featherweight #singerfeatherweight by jaskets http://ift.tt/1KXm5c2

Bark Processing of Four Northeastern Trees
This summer was my first working with trees for basketry. I set out to try several different species and learn what I could about selecting trees, removing the outer bark, stripping the inner bark, and preparing it for weaving. Overall it was a success and I ended up with a lot of material that I am looking forward to using! I am recording my observations about the process here to hopefully help…

In a break from this project, I’m working on another little piece that uses some of the same techniques. What I’m doing is somewhat in the realm of couching- sewing down a thicker thread/yarn by stitching over and around it- and somewhat in the realm of coiling- a basketry technique where you wrap a thinner thread around a thicker one and let it build up on itself to create a vessel- except mine is flat, and I’m working from the outside in rather than the inside out.
Again, it’s like a fiber sketch, done more to demonstrate possibilities and play with fibers than to create a piece in its own right. I’m experimenting with how the couching/coiling technique works, using contrasting threads (dark purple and bright red-orange) instead of monochrome colors (white-on-white, as in the bigger project) to make the resulting texture more visible. In this picture, you can see a bit of how it works. I lay down the thick purple yarn first, then stitch over it in a blanket stitch with the red-orange thread (actually laceweight rayon yarn) to hold it in place and bind it to the other threads. This eventually builds up into a solid, flat textile. In the end all those gaps will be filled in, as with my larger project.

The random weave basket I made using mint, oregano and vines from the garden has just been sitting about outside so I decided to stick it in the mulberry tree like a nest.

In a nest weaving a basket, a detail of my weaving in progress and the beautiful forest floor where the ivy was sourced from! Me mid-workshop in heaven. If you can make your work something you love, I recommend you do:) #happyplace by shelleykrycer https://instagram.com/p/3-3dxHmQAD/

Made not Manufactured: A beautiful photographic project by Steve Kenward. Steve has been travelling around the UK photographing craftspeople. It really is a beautiful project and well worth a proper look.
“Meeting the makers - highlighting some of the talented craftspeople that the UK has to offer. People that use traditional crafts to make something that still has relevance today. They are passionate about what they do and take care in everything they produce.”
