-make time for your friends and family and dn feel guilty about it! (coffee study sessions are a gr8 idea)

now that junior year has finally come to a close, i think it’s safe to call myself a bit of an expert. here’s some tips and advice i have for all you upcoming juniors:

▪act/sat prep. DO IT. i went to a tutoring center that specialized in act prep, but there are many other resources out there like prep books and khan academy (however if you know you won’t do it on your own, i strongly suggest a tutor). i had tutoring about 3 times a week for 2 months, and it brought my math up 5 points and my total score from a 29 to a 31. trust me, these scores can and will make or break your college application.

▪rigorous schedule. take as many ap and honors classes as you can handle because every guidance counselor i’ve ever had has told me colleges!! want!! RIGOR!!

▪extracurriculars. join as many clubs as you can. clubs/activities i’ve done throughout hs include: theatre, thespian troupe, SHAPE, campus ministry, think pink, spirit club, key club, cross country, and ballet. BEEF UP THAT APPLICATION.

~side note: colleges also like some consistency, so try and find one or two clubs to stick with for at least 3 years.

▪leadership. run for office, be it in student council, a club, or an honor society. i have been president of the theatre club for 2 years and i plan on running for offices in my honor societies.

▪honor societies. junior year is typically the year you are inducted. search up what the requirements are and strive to be inducted. this looks great for college and gives you cords at graduation.

▪service hours. many scholarships out there have a set service hour requirement. volunteer at an animal shelter or soup kitchen or set up a drive at school. see what service projects are already out there or create your own.

▪keep your grades up. i can not stress how important this year is when applying to college. this is literally the most important year of your high school career. DO. NOT. SLACK. get your work done in time, make study groups, put forth as much effort as possible this year.

▪create a schedule. in the midst of this whirlwind of a year, between standardised testing, grades, clubs, and applications, things are bound to fall through the cracks. try to put yourself on a schedule. break your day up down to the minute. see where in your day you have a few spare minutes to get some work out of the way so you have more free time at home.

~side note: buy a planner with lots of room and time slots, or download a scheduling app. i personally like the app time tune a lot.

▪take care of your body. this year wound up being a very unhealthy year for my friends and i. i started losing weight out of nowhere and getting sick, and broke out in stress hives. please make sure you are eating well, sleeping enough, drinking water, and working out.

▪cut toxic people out of your life. this was the year i said fuck it and stopped giving shitty people 50 chances. i’m going to be real with you. this will be the year you start to find out which friends you keep past hs, which ones you’re only riding out with til graduation, and the ones that you are getting rid of right now. it sucks but it needs to be done.

▪try to find a job. i recommend aiming to get one during the summer, since i literally had no time during the year for work. however summer jobs are a prime opportunity to get some work experience for your resume.

So, I am a rising senior, and my junior year was rough. It was my first time taking any AP classes, and I got involved with about eight clubs and two music groups. Due to my overstretched schedule and rigorous work, I was always tired and upset. These are some tips I wish someone had told me or given to me when I started my year. 

 –

1. Ask questions. I was once one of those kids who never had to study, and never needed to ask questions. In junior year, your course load will get harder. If you’re in class, and there is something you don’t understand, ask. Your teachers want to help you. (And the kids who ask the most questions usually get the highest grades.)

2. Don’t overextend yourself. Like I said earlier in my post, I signed up for roughly 8 clubs, and I was heavily involved with all of them, and I still had things to do outside of school. Focus on one or two things you are really passionate about, and throw yourself into those. I personally think it’s better to be a master of one subject instead of a jack-of-all-trades.

3. Community service matters. The required amount of community service hours range from school to school. One of the best things you can add to your transcript for college is your community service experiences. If a college can see that you make a consistent commitment outside the classroom, they can guarantee that you’ll be involved on campus.

4. SLEEP. As a former APUSH student, sleep was compromised for me. As a result, I could barely focus in class, and my writing for both APUSH and my writing class was shoddy. I was also grumpy all the time.

5. It’s okay to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them. I personally made many mistakes that will be hard to reverse, but I know I can learn from them and move on. If you can prove to a college rep that you know what you’re doing or what you’re aiming for, and you make an effort to do so, you will always have a chance to apply to any school.

we all procrastinate, but you learn to procrastinate a little better, a little less, in a more manageable way

self-discipline will last you longer than a single spark of motivation ever will

prioritize.

it’s like school but school on steroids

in retrospect, junior year shouldn’t have been that hard, it shouldn’t have been as intense, it shouldn’t have felt any different

but it does

do not forget about your grades!

sure, you might get bad grades every once in a while, but there are ways to improve them

standardized tests. get them done. get them figured out. here is a video that i made w/ tips

what do your colleges on your list want? what are their requirements? make sure to get them done because senior year will be busy for you.

tests. 

study for them. 

take them with a clear mind, a steady breath, try to be prepared as best you can.

cramming isn’t the best, but you might (will) have to do it depending on how well you manage your time

don’t forget that you’re human too. you need time to recharge. you need time to socialize.

be kind to your teachers. your teachers can be your friends. your teachers will also be the ones to write you recommendations for college.

spare time in your schedule to hang out with your friends. this helped me stay sane in the middle of the toughest times.

stay positive

got classes that you hate? it’s okay, you only have a year’s worth of them. you can make it through.

school is not the end-all-be-all

get some extracurriculars that you genuinely enjoy in there too

you might be tempted to swear it all off for the sake of focusing

don’t. that’s a dumb decision. you will regret it.

it might be tough, but it’s rewarding at the end. you’ll make new memories, friends, everything good and fluffy and shiny in the world

get enough sleep

i’m genuine. you may not feel like it is possible but it is. i know five people who slept every night at least before 10 pm and they survived with 4.0 at the end of the year. it is possible.

fix that sleep schedule on weekends, during breaks, whenever you can

it’ll hurt. it’ll be hard. it’ll be tough. you will feel like you will cry.

but you will make it in the end.

you will survive.

you will heal.

TIPS AND TRICKS ON WRITING A RESEARCH ESSAY

i decided to create a blog post on tips/tricks i’ve learnt when i was writing my research essay

When choosing a topic for your research essay, make sure to choose a CONCRETE and RESEARCHABLE topic that you ENJOY. It’ll be difficult to research on a topic that is not easy to search up in the internet. Start off by choosing a general topic and then see where you can go from there. Make sure the topic you’ve chosen is something you’ll enjoy reading about, because truth be told, it’s difficult to keep yourself engaged in writing an essay about something you absolutely hate. You’ll quickly lose interest and your essay is gonna turn out horrible.

Before diving into anything, create a solid PLAN on what you’re going to do, from start to finish. It may sound unnecessary but trust me, it helps you be organized. When i first started out with my research essay, i was all over the place cuz i didnt have a solid rundown of what i needed to do and nothing flowed. Is this a tedious step? Yes. Is it helpful? 110%!

When writing the actual essay, create an outline (kind of like a table of content on what will be inside the essay). Again, this is a tedious task but helps keep you organized. Your brain churns out the essay in a smoother flow when you got your outline, cuz it wont jump from one idea to another while you’re writing.

PACE YOURSELF - this is one of the most important thing when writing a research essay. Most likely the essay is gonna be a hella long one, so its important to pace yourself. Do a little bit of the essay everyday, dont procrastinate till the last day to do it. It’s gonna turn out to be a very bad essay if you leave it till the last minute.

Give little BREAKS for yourself and dont kill yourself over the essay. Writing a research essay sucks a lot but dont push yourself over the limit for it. Chances are, you’re gonna run into a writer’s block if you stress yourself too hard over it. For every 30minutes of writing, give yourself a 5-10minute break before starting again.

Use citationmachine.net when writing out your reference page / doing in-text citations. This website is my LIFESAVER - it saved me a lot of time and i didnt have to spend so much effort in creating my citations. All you need to do is type out the article you’re going to cite from on the website and it’ll generate the citations for you. EasyPeasy

It was a preetty chill day. I talked to my counselor for an hour or so and then went our to grab some bubble tea and have dinner with a few friends. It was nice.
