Kyungsoo had just left the front of the house to procure himself a light breakfast, erroneously thinking that customers wouldn’t begin to trickle in this early in the morning.
It was only the filtered sound of the other’s soft footfalls and general shuffling noises through the old air system that warned Kyungsoo of his apparent visitor. He finished washing his fruit and grabbed his cup of tea from last night off the counter where he left it last and made his way towards the register, deciding to use the servants door partially obscured by the large bookcase behind his counter.
He couldn’t help but smile as he observed a young man rifling through the books haphazardly sorted on a smaller shelf near the window. He cleared his throat and patiently waited for the customer to acknowledge him, deciding that it would be less creepy to alert the other of his presence now rather than later.
It took a few seconds for the sound of the new arrival in the room to register in his mind, and when it did he turned his head to glance at him, greeting the other with a small smile and a very slight nod. He couldn't keep his attention off the books for long though, as he'd just found one which he felt particularly drawn towards. He carefully drew it out from between the two surrounding volumes, and he ran his fingers almost appraisingly over the slightly dusty cover before opening it to peek inside at the table of contents.
Soon deciding he could find something of interest in this one (concerning the mythological and metaphysical lore surrounding various trees and plants, only some of which he was familiar with), he closed it again and held it at his side as he turned toward the other sections, drifting over to scan the shelves for words that jumped out at him. He glanced over at the man again, realizing it may be considered rude not to say anything.
"Hello," he started politely, his voice coming out quiet. His hesitant smile brightened a bit when he spotted the cup in the other man's hands. "What kind of tea is that? I like tea."

There were few forms of indulgence in Taemin's life but that foggy morning he set out in search of one of them. With a pocket full of bills and loose change he sought out an antique shop he'd recently heard of, hoping to find an interesting old book or two and if he was lucky, some paraphernalia of his craft.
Coming up to the building, he spotted the sign that let him know he'd found the right place...The Cabinet, scrawled in ornate letters. It almost resembled an old residence; in fact, once he pushed the front door open there was no missing the distinctly lived-in vibe. His footfalls on the hardwood floor echoed slightly as he gave a look around, and off to the left through a doorway he spotted shelves of leather and cloth-bound books. A soft smile curving his lips, he drifted into that room without hesitating, eyes darting with excitement from one title to the next and fingers lightly landing on the ones that sparked his interest.

—Maram al-Massri, Poetry, September 2013 The New York Daily News and Al Jazeera point out al-Massri’s plight to keep the literary community alive in Syria. “Knocks on the Door" was selected by Lemony Snicket to appear as part of his portfolio in Poetry’s September issue, "Poetry Not Written for Children that Children Might Nevertheless Enjoy.”
