The story of these magnificent doors begins in 1847, when the pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley. Many arrived with little more than the clothes on their backs, yet they carried something far greater—an unshakable faith in Jesus Christ and a vision of a House of the Lord that had been foretold by ancient prophets.
For the next 40 years, through sacrifice, hardship, and unwavering devotion, they built the Salt Lake Temple stone by stone. Every carving, every beam, and every doorway became a witness of their covenant to God.
When these historic temple doors were carefully removed in February 2020, another remarkable chapter began. Returning them to their rightful place would require extraordinary craftsmanship and dedication.
Over 3,500 hours were spent by five specialized companies as they lovingly restored these sacred doors in a climate-controlled warehouse. More than a century of dirt and wear was gently removed, revealing once again the breathtaking beauty of the intricate carvings created by faithful hands so many years ago.
For those involved, removing the doors was one of the most challenging parts of the entire renovation. Detailed mock-ups were built. Specialized platforms were designed. Every movement had to be carefully planned as the massive doors were lowered down the temple steps with precision and care.
But for the craftsmen, engineers, and construction crews who have devoted years to preserving this sacred temple, this has never been just another construction project.
Many have walked through these halls, paused in reverence, and been overwhelmed as they witnessed the temple restored to its vibrant beauty.
To see the craftsmanship, the colors, the light, and the spirit that fills this sacred place is deeply moving. It is a reminder that temples are more than beautiful buildings—they are Houses of the Lord, where heaven and earth come together, where families are united for eternity, and where sacred covenants bring lasting peace and hope through Jesus Christ.
Today, these historic doors once again stand at the entrance of the Salt Lake Temple, welcoming a new generation.
In Spring 2027, the Salt Lake Temple will open its doors to the world during the Salt Lake Temple Celebration.
We warmly invite everyone to come.
It does not matter who you are, where you come from, or whether you simply have questions. Come and experience this historic moment for yourself. Come and feel the peace. Come and discover why temples are so sacred to millions throughout the world.
This is more than the restoration of a historic building.
It is the continuation of a sacred legacy of faith, sacrifice, and covenant keeping that began with the pioneers and continues today.
If you would like to be part of this once-in-a-generation celebration, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is still seeking 35,000 volunteers to help welcome visitors from around the world.
We hope to see you there. ~Chad James L. Fournier
