“i’m never wearing black lipstick again. i swear, i thought that stuff was stuck on me forever.” kate groaned, sat on the couch beside clint and offered him a cup of coffee. “some party, huh? i kept telling everyone i was dressed as a homicidal maniac. guess it fit the whole wednesday addams ordeal.” she sipped at her mug, cupping her hands around it to warm herself up. “i wish we had our weapons. we could take these doombots out from this window. maybe there is a way we can take them out without weapons. i think we could easily find a way to do that. what do you think?”

Everything was a mess with what has been going on since going through the rift. His youngest refuses to leave his side, but thankfully went down for a nap in his room. He chuckles, and shrugs his shoulders. “We could partner up for something more innocent for now — BAKING maybe.” The thought is funny, enough to make him laughs “We can make cookies with Nate. He’s pretty attached to me since we got here.” Which is sweet most of the time, but they all have their own ways to cope — through a four year old’s eyes that was his. His gaze settles on Kate though, and squeezes her hand gently as he breaks down a little thinking about Barney. “I hope you’re right. He can be an asshole sometimes, but he’s still my brother. How are you and your friends doing?”

“clint, i hate to say it, but i’ve got a feeling you and baking are two things that should never mix.” she teased. kate tugged her knees to her chest, letting her chin rest on them. “i’ll help you make cookies only if it’s for nate. i can’t say no to him.” the first few days here, kate had barely left the flat her and america shared. her hallucination in the jungle was still making her uneasy. thankfully, though, she was adjusting well here. she didn’t necessarily like it, but it was better than where they were. she puts an arm around clint, giving him a bit of a hug. she hated seeing him so upset. “he’s your family. it’s okay to be worried about him, but i’m sure he’s okay. we’ve all been thrown for a loop. barney’s somewhere out there.” kate shrugged at his next question. “i’m doing fine, but america and billy can’t use their powers and i think that’s been a pretty big adjustment for them.”

america let kate hold her arm, slightly embarrassed that she was having this issue in the first place. she wasn’t used to the idea of needing to be careful whenever she did something. but she knows what kate had to deal with. the bruises her girlfriend showed up with were still fresh in her mind. it killed her inside. “no, it doesn’t hurt.” that might’ve been a lie but she could handle it. “are you okay, though? did yours heal?” her eyes were already scanning kate to check for any remnants. 

it should be the other way around. kate shouldn’t be taking care of america’s bruises. she didn’t mind, though. “you don’t have to be tough all the time, you know.” kate flashed a smile at america. when america brought up the bruises kate showed up with in the jungle, she cringed. she didn’t want to think about it. she started to lie, but she knew better. “there’s still one on my side, but i’m fine otherwise. they’ve all healed.”

She sat down with a sigh, her tail curling around her, Tippy chattering something irritable on her shoulder. Doreen’s squirrelese was rough these days, but she’d die before she lost it entirely. Suck it, Doom. “Yeah, I know,” she said. “But why does he have his own coding language? It’s such a bad one, too. Every character is just a component of DOOM, and it’s only good for building Doombots. Computer science is so cool, how did he manage to mess even that up? Like, I don’t want to fail my classes, but this is just offensive. It’s wounding my pride. My pride is wounded.”

kate hadn’t been adjusting well here, but she was thankful everyone happened to make it here alive. “i guess to boost his ego. how bad is his coding? is it just doom written over and over again but in computer coding?” kate didn’t quite understand computer science, but she’d love to hear doreen tell her all about it. “maybe i should try and go to school. i just don’t know what i’d like to do here. i never did expect to enjoy being a bartender, though.”

“you have gotta be fucking kidding me dude.”

The boy stops, looking at the street being blocked off. He hates not being able to use his magic. It makes him feel as if part of him had been torn out of him. Mephisto claiming his soul would have been better than this. Billy relied too heavily on using portals instead of walking. His gaze shifts to look at Kate with a sigh. “It looks like we have to find a way around.” The DOOMBOTS wouldn’t let them pass for whatever reason.  [ @lcdyhawkeye· ]

she had one arm hooked with her best friend’s. this place was making her feel uneasy. she was completely unarmed and felt completely useless. “i don’t like these things.” she turned billy around and headed back down the street. “we can just go back to my place if these silly things are going to keep us from going anywhere.” kate stopped for a minute, though, glancing over at billy. “how are you holding up without your powers? are you doing alright?”

Pyro hadn’t really been paying too much attention to the others in the Savage Lands, but he would’ve had to have been blind not to notice how good this girl had been with a bow and arrow. He hadn’t cared to learn her name then, but now he was moderately interested. “So… if our powers are fucking up here, does that mean you can’t hit any target anymore?” He asked curiously, “Or was all that pure talent?” Surely someone with aim that flawless couldn’t possibly just be human.

kate wasn’t too happy when her bow had been confiscated from her, but she knew better than to argue for it back. when the man beside her questioned her abilities, kate chuckled. “it’s pure talent, babe. i’m all human.” kate’s aim was as close to flawless as it could be. still, there was always room for improvement. “i make my own arrowheads too. i mean, i have normal ones, but i also have some that can do what other arrows can’t. they took my bow though. can’t do much without it. i’m kate. i don’t think we’ve formally met.”

“Okay, the ferret rescue was unexpected, but I get to help folks even if I have to wear a stupid uniform. Hopefully.”

“hey, at least you were focused on saving lives,” kate laughed. “it’s still a bit weird though.” kate glanced over his uniform. it wasn’t actually that bad. “so what’s your job title now? ferret rescuer or is something a little more fancier? Personally, I’m a big fan of ferret rescuer.”

The archer starts to pour two mugs full of coffee, taking advantage of having access to it again. He had a lot to worry about between adjusting to this place AND his two oldest children complaining about going to school again. “I’m HAPPY to hear that.” He walks over, placing the mugs on the table. He leans back in his chair, looking over at Kate while taking a sip from his own. HE REALLY MISSED COFFEE. “I think he’s full of himself from what I’ve seen. We have to play nice though since Earth is gone.” The thought settles in finally. “Earth is gone. Barney, NO —”

kate never thought she’d be so thankful to have coffee again. it had been one of the first things she grabbed when they arrived. “i don’t know how much partner stuff we’ll be doing around here unless you want to go around and spray paint some doombots,” she joked. kate pulled her knees to her chest, the mug resting on top of them. she waited for his response, and she noticed the way he seemed to come to a full realization. “hey, hey,” she said, quickly setting her cup down and reaching out to grab his hand. “it’s okay. hey. i wish i was better at this whole comforting words thing,” she sighed, “but i swear it’s going to be okay. what if he shows up? just because earth is gone doesn’t mean barney is gone too.”

“will it?” bucky replies with a sigh as he looked down at the suit he was to wear to work. it was odd to see himself in this, much less be in it in general, but he wasn’t about to argue. “a step up from what i’m used to, i guess. still, feels weird to be wearing a tie. does it look like my arms are about to hulk out of the sleeves of this thing?” he fidgeted with the cuffs of the dress shirt. “hopefully we won’t have to deal with more bloodstains. i’d be happy to put that in the past, honestly.”

kate reached out to adjust bucky’s cuffs for him. “my dad would always struggle with the little buttons in the mornings. i never understood how he handled a job that required him to be so dressed up all the time.” kate shook her head at his question as she gave him a quick glance over. “i think you look nice. pretty sure your arms won’t rip the shirt unless you try really hard.” she was thankful her job didn’t require such a uniform. “i’m hoping all the blood is gone, but it looks like we’ve got a brand new problem on her hands. not sure if we can do much about it though.”

“Glad I thought to pack painkillers.”

at this point, kate was convinced the painkillers were the smartest thing to have around here. “careful with them. he might decide he wants to ban those too,” she laughed. “mind sharing? i could use one right about now.” kate pulled open the door to a small cafe. she could really go for something to eat right about now. “what do they have you doing around here? i got a job as a bartender. i’ve done really done that before so it could get interesting.”

“I should’ve packed my machete.”

kate managed a smile as the pair walked past the doombots paroling the streets. “i wish you did too. you could take out a few of those irritating things.” she turned to stare back at them and spotted some red paint on them. “whoever decided to paint these things red is smart. i think they look better like that anyways.” in some ways, kate was thankful to be here. at least this place had coffee. “i guess it is nice to be back in some sort of civilization. i still think this doom guy is a nut job.”

“Yeah...you and me both.” kate had a killer headache since being here, and she still hadn’t recovered from having her bow snatched out of her hands the moment she arrived. “i don’t like this place. i mean, i guess its better than the jungle we were living in, but at least that wasn’t run by some guy that decides to ban a certain color,” she groaned. “how are you adjusting?”

“know of any selfish dickheads who might be in need of a partner?”

The man thinks about it for a moment, pretending to really reflect on the question asked. “No, I can’t say that I do, Katie.” Clint smiles instead while looking at the other archer, glad they all got through that rift even if WHAT was waiting on the other side hasn’t been any better. “I don’t need a new partner when I GOT YOU. Coffee?” He asks holding up a fresh pot of it that has been made. Clint knows how badly BOTH of them missed this part of modern society. [ @lcdyhawkeye ]

“dang it. i mean, i have a partner already but he’s kind of annoying,” she joked, nudging her friend’s shoulder. kate was thankful they all made it through the rift safely. so far, everyone was okay. she wanted to keep it that way. “hey, i wouldn’t trade you for anything, especially when you offer coffee.” kate held out a coffee mug. “i can’t even begin to tell you how much i missed coffee. it’s been too long.” she had the mug cupped in both hands, drawing any of its warmth to her hands. “what do you think of this doom guy?”

america raises her eyebrows at her girlfriend. neither of them seemed to be adjusting well. “if you’re dying then take me with you, princess. i’m actually getting hurt.” america held out her arm looking at the small bruise that formed due to her carelessness with day to day activities. “i can’t believe you had to deal with these your whole life.”

kate was happy to be out of the jungle, but their current situation certainly was not ideal. “now you know how i feel all the time,” she teased before taking america’s arm gently to get a better look at this bruise. “does it hurt?” she couldn’t help but smile, though, at how such a small bruise was bothering her. “you’ve seen some of the bruises i get from training. i think you’ll survive,” she said before kissing her girlfriend’s cheek.

giving a look of impression, thor pursed his lips as he glanced down and over at the other hawkeye and raised a brow. “it looks like a discarded shroud of some sort, also looks as if its already got blood on it - dried and old, i maybe wouldn’t keep touching that if i were you, kate.” he offered, pointing at the weird stains all over it. pausing, he leaned down towards her and whispered as he stared at a few passing citizens, “who is this doom man?”

she glanced down, spotting the rust color that seemed to cover the lower half of the sweatshirt. kate held the shirt out and away from her body before tossing in into the closest trash can. “yeah, i think you’re right. in my defense, i didn’t see the blood right away.” the archer shrugged at his question, giving him almost a sad look. “i honestly don’t know. i don’t think he’s a good guy though. you know, i was really hoping that rift was gonna bring us back home.”

It doesn’t make sense why ANYONE would bring those scumbags over to this reality. Clint makes a vow to himself to go through all the precautions so they won’t get the chance to ever get close to Kate again. He doesn’t know what they look like, but he knows how those type of men carry themselves. He’s tracked down people like that before.

“I can take a look around outside later if you want — make sure they’re keeping distance.” Clint doesn’t want to make it sound like he’s going hunting — his time as Ronin was behind him. It was, right? His loved ones were important to him, so he’s a little protective. “I won’t let them hurt you again. I promise. You won’t have to see those men again.” Clint starts to treat the wounds, a small smile forming on his face at her words. She was still with him, which is reassuring. “All you have to do is wear the band-aids with pride.” The archer pulls back after he was finished. They’ll need a story, but what? “We could always say that we were training, but I’m not bruised so that might not work. OR maybe a dinosaur cornered you in a morning stroll?”

kate shook her head. “no. you don’t need to do that. thank you, though, i appreciate it.” she let him treat the wounds, scrunching her nose up at the movements. it wasn’t that clint was doing anything--she had just been punched in the face. kate wasn’t surprised she was a bit sore. “what would i do without you?” she cracked a smile as she scratched behind lucky’s ears. kate had froze out there. maybe, just maybe, wouldn’t have been so bruised if she had just fought back. “the training one wouldn’t work. i couldn’t let people think you kicked my ass, but i think the dinosaur one could work. no one really seems to question dinosaur stories around here.”
