I've had a Sinner Swap AU swirling about in my head for a while now, so I'm just gonna write down some my ideas about the sinners and their backstories. I still haven't really thought about weapons and ego's, but that'll come later.
Sinner #1: Dongbaek
In the explosion that Dongbaek created, it was Yi Sang that got seriously injured. So Gubo kidnapped Dongbaek because he believed that out of anyone, Yi Sang would have told her the most about the Mirror. She was forced to help experiment with the Mirror. But, she would eventually escape and be recruited by Limbus Company.
Sinner #2: Faust
I think she would be the one constant member of Limbus Company in every mirrorworld.
Sinner #3: Don Quixote
During the time that the bloodfiends of La Manchaland revolted, Sancho chose to take the fall and hold back the bloodfiends in order to give Don Quixote a chance to escape. He of course wears Rocinante in order to keep his bloodfiend-ish qualities hidden. I'm not quite sure yet if I want Don Quixote to forget everything, like in-game "Don Quixote". Or if I want him to keep his memories and be forced to remember what he did to his family.
Sinner #4: Araya
In my AU, Ryoshu understands that she can't escape the House of Spiders with Araya. So she trains Araya how to use her sword. Eventually Ryoshu uses Arayashiki to cut open a path for Araya to escape. She hands her daughter the sword and Ryoshu remains within the House of Spiders. Shortly thereafter Araya is recruited by Limbus Company.
Sinner #5: Marie
Ok, this backstory is the most difficult to make up, because we haven't met Marie yet and we haven't seen Meursault's backstory. I'm going to assume that Meursault distorted when he was still working at N Corp. and killed someone. In this AU, Marie worked together with him in the Grand Magasin Sisyphe and was the only one to witness this happening. Because video footage is forbidden in N Corp., she's the only one that can testify against Meursault and decides to take the fall. After which she's banished from N Corp.
Sinner #6: Lin Daiyu
Lin Daiyu knows that the destruction of the Kong Family was somehow Jia Mu’s fault. The way Jia Baoyu avoided any and all questions about it only served as further proof. Because of her questioning, the Jia family became distrustful of her and sent assassins to kill her. Thus, she ran away from Hongyuan for her own safety and in the hopes that she can find out what happened that fateful day.
Sinner #7: Catherine
Heathcliff ran away shortly after Linton’s marriage proposal. It quickly became clear to Catherine that living without him would be unbearable and so, she too ran away in order to find him. Instead she got involved with Limbus Company.
Sinner #8: Queequeg
I'm gonna say that what happened to Queequeg is very similar as to what happened to Ishmael. They both joined Ahab on the Pequod in search of the Pallid Whale. But in this version, it is Queequeg who survived the shipwreck and now wished to get revenge on Ahab.
Sinner #9: Sonya
So, Rodion still kills the debtcollector from the middle and their entire neighbourhood still gets massacred. But the middle somehow gets it in their heads that it was Sonya who was responsible (likely because he was the leader of the Yurodiviye) and he is forced to flee in order to make sure no one else gets hurt. I also like the idea of Rodion taking over the Yurodiviye after Sonya leaves and kind of twisting their ideals to fit her goal of being special. But I haven't really worked out how that would come together in the story.
Sinner #11: Kromer
I'll be honest, I have the most difficulty figuring out what Kromer's backstory would be. I think Demian would first try to approach Sinclair as in the game, but Sinclair somehow got ahold of the Mirror and kind of went insane. Kromer would still be somewhat insane, but wouldn't have a massive hatred towards prosthetic users as in the game. I just don't have any idea how or why she would have joined Limbus Company. I'll figure that out later.
Sinner #12: Penelope
First of, I'm making Penelope a man because of the huge gender imbalance. Second of, Outis (or Odysseus in this universe) is missing and Penelope joins Limbus Company because he believes that that is the only way of finding her. Odysseus is currently trapped in the Ruins underneath the City. The how or what, I haven't worked out, but it would make a very good story of them having to travel to the Ruins (likely encountering some rivers along the way) and finding out through their journey what really happened to Odysseus.
Sinner #13: Grete
Her backstory would still involve experimentation with bio-prosthetics. In this universe Gregor would still be a warhero, but he would be killed at the end of the Smoke War. Grete on the other hand was more of a "failed" experiment that got thrown to the wayside once Gregor's arm turned out to be superior. After the Smoke War, she tried to live a normal life, but never seemed to fit in due to her prosthetic.
